How much does a goldfish live

How many live goldfish?

What is the life expectancy of aquarium goldfish? It is difficult to answer this question unequivocally, since various conditions of the maintenance strongly influence the duration of their existence in aquariums. We can only talk about what measures need to be taken to ensure that their stay in a closed aquatic system is more comfortable and durable.

Goldfish: who she is and where she came from

Perhaps this is one of the oldest representatives of a large family of carp, which they taught to live at home. There is every reason to believe that this happened a long time ago in China, where court breeders began to cross different representatives of silver carp and breed them in imperial ponds. And so the golden fish appeared in several varieties: the dragon's eye, che, veins (vualehvostka), wakin, dzhikin.

In such almost natural conditions, decorative crucians lived for quite a long time - up to 20-25 years, and their weight reached 4-5 kilograms.

At the beginning of the 16th century, ornamental fish came to Japan, and another 100 years later - to Europe. In the middle of the 19th century, it reached America.

Interesting fact: for a long time, the Europeans believed that the golden Chinese woman did not eat feed at all and only drink water. As a result: 2-3 months of a similar hunger strike, and Karasik died.

Only after many years did the European owners of these beautiful creatures learn to maintain them (to the delight of the fish themselves).

However, since the late Middle Ages about the goldfish went bad rumor that their age is quite short. This is a misconception.

At present, the habits, character and condition of the fish organism of golden crucians are very well studied. There is a whole set of recommendations for the maintenance of fish, allowing them to extend their existence at home.

But still the duration of their aquarium life rarely exceeds 8-10 years. In principle, for a permanent stay in a small closed volume quite well!

Optimum conditions for a decorative goldfish

Of course, there are no strict regulated rules for its content. We can only talk about some recommendations based on the vast centuries-old experience of aquarists of the whole world on the breeding of goldfish in captivity.

They belong to the cold-water, the fish feel great at normal room temperature. Even a slight heating of the aquatic environment is extremely poorly tolerated.

A few words about feeding. Crucians, as you know, are very voracious and almost omnivorous. And since a goldfish is a decorative crucian, it will eat as much as there will be food available. Feeding is frequent and abundant - a high probability of overeating, which will affect the duration of fish life is extremely negative. In addition, it must be remembered that animals eat well some aquatic vegetation.

Conditions of detention. Goldfish need space, so the aquarium should not be overcrowded. It should be remembered that it was originally a pond fish, accustomed to frolic in the water column. By the way, and now all individuals sold in pet stores can be divided into 2 large groups: grown in ponds for mass distribution and purely aquarium individuals.

It is unlikely that an ordinary seller in a pet store will tell you exactly where these bright decorative crucians came from - from a pond nursery or a selection aquarium. But just in case, you should count on one fish to account for at least 40-50 liters of water. So imagine what the size of the aquarium fit.

Water parameters. This animal leaves behind a lot of waste, and the water loves clean and saturated with oxygen. Therefore, good filtration (especially mechanical) and aeration are extremely important.

General rules. So, summing up some information about the features of the content, we can formulate a few rules, the observance of which will prolong the life of goldfish for a long time:

  1. With a content of 3-4 individuals the required volume of the aquarium is 150-200 liters.
  2. Existence of the powerful external filter and the compressor for aeration of water.
  3. Feeding a variety of foods (vegetable, dry feed, worms) no more than 1-2 times a day. One day a week - unloading.
  4. Mandatory presence in the aquarium aquatic plants.
  5. Weekly water change at least of the total volume.

As a rule, compliance with these recommendations has a beneficial effect on the life of bright golden beauties. Unless, of course, in the aquarium is not brought infection.

Long-lived fish

It so happened that it was in England that there were goldfish that lived for 30, 40 and even more years! Perhaps, somewhere else there are the same long-lived women, but it was the English women who became famous.

So, in 1999, at the age of 44, she died. fish named Tish (male). Family Hand from the county of North. Yorkshire, where Tish lived for several decades in a small aquarium, was grieved by his death; he was literally a member of the family. Gordon and Hilda Hand buried him in the shade of the trees in his plot: Tish didn’t like the hot sunshine.

And in the Wright family a pair of goldfish named Splish and Splash lived more than 30 years. At one time, the head of the family, Richard Wright, said that for his pets, which he started when he was young, no special conditions were created: a 40-liter aquarium, room temperature water, no direct sunlight, and feeding once a day with specialized food. Perhaps such Spartan conditions affected the longevity so enviable for fish?

10 years ago the great interest of the media caused the message of death from old age goldfish named goldiethat was kept at home in Devon Tom and Paulina Evans. Goldie was the 46th year! The owners sadly buried him in a secluded corner of his garden.

How many live aquarium goldfish? Definitely not tell, 10 or 40 years ... Perhaps this is a matter of chance. We can only hope that the creation of optimal conditions for the golden beauty will increase her chances of a long life!

How many live aquarium fish?

Each aquarist wonders how many aquarium fish live. Everyone needs to know this. If you are not sure that you want to keep the aquarium for a long time, get fish with a short lifespan. For experienced breeders, the number of years is important to count the spawning that the fish will have time to implement.

Several things can affect the lifespan of aquarium dwellers:

  • The size;
  • Water temperature;
  • Overfeeding;
  • Undernourishment;
  • Conditions of detention;
  • Neighborhood.

Size of fish

The main criterion is the size of the fish. By this indicator, you can judge how long you can admire your pet in the aquarium. The smallest inhabitants have the lowest border, whose dimensions do not exceed 5 centimeters. For example, neon, guppy, swordman. They live from one to five years.

Record small sizes were found in South American small fish - zinolebias. The length of her life depended on the rainy season, as soon as a drought occurred - zinolebias was dying. The only thing that saved the fish from extinction - the timely throwing of caviar. During the period of high water, she managed to appear, grow, spawn, and die.

Fish, whose dimensions are defined as medium, can live up to 15 years, and some representatives over 25, for example, piranhas. Therefore, starting such pets, be prepared for a long neighborhood.

Interesting fact, males live significantly longer than females. Sometimes, the difference reaches almost two years. Breeds are known where the female dies after the birth of fry. Of course, no one is immune from the unsuccessful throwing of caviar or a number of diseases, but most often this is observed in sword bearers and gupeshek.

Aquarium water temperature

The temperature of the water in the aquarium affects the lifetime. Cold-blooded animals can not control the temperature of their body on their own, so water sets the rhythm for most processes in the body. The body temperature of the fish is equal to degrees of water. Thus, the higher the score, the more intense the metabolic processes in the fish's body, and, therefore, life expectancy is reduced. Sometimes this figure reaches several years.

It is proved that if you rarely change the aquarium water, the concentration of harmful substances in the water will be above the norm, which would entail a reduction in the life of the inhabitants. Use distilled water whose chlorine content is close to the permissible value. Bad water can lead to dysfunction of the respiratory organs and diseases of the digestive organs.

On how much live aquarium fish, affects feed. It's about overfeeding and underfeeding. Fish obesity is a fairly common problem. Most often this happens in a family with young children who are interested to look at the inhabitants of the aquarium who eat the food. Don't underestimate underfeeding. Due to the lack of nutrient and vitamin elements, they do not have enough energy for a normal existence. If in doubt about the right amount of feed, smell the water. If you are overfeeding fish, the water will have a specific smell. Ideally, it should not emanate any flavor.

Overfeeding occurs if:

  • Water has a rotten smell;
  • Rapidly cloudy;
  • The film is formed;
  • Algae have slippery patina.

In order to avoid the death of your favorite fish and increase the number of years of cohabitation, it is necessary to observe the measure in feeding, then the life expectancy will correspond to the figure indicated in reliable sources. The feed should be enough for the fish to eat it within a few minutes after serving the food.

Proper selection of neighbors

The number of years lived can vary according to the nature and type of neighbors. When you create a dream aquarium, it is not enough to know the aesthetic criteria and dimensions, it is necessary to evaluate your preferred habitat zone and character. If fish can get used to the hardness of water, then it is unlikely to endure the unacceptable habits of the neighbors.

The combination of fish size is one of the fundamental rules of an aquarist. Big fish are able to eat small fish or fry, regardless of taste preferences. Before you start the new inhabitants - carefully examine the compatibility.

Overpopulation adversely affects the life expectancy of aquarium fish. The negative effects of overpopulation:

  • Lack of feed;
  • High competition;
  • Lack of oxygen;
  • Frequent illness;
  • Aggressive behavior;
  • Fight for leadership.

All this can lead to the death of fish. It is important to observe the number of liters for each individual. Otherwise, the life of the fish can be reduced. Be wary of cocky breeds, they are capable of killing an opponent in the fight for leadership.

How many live aquarium fish?

How many live fish?

How many live aquarium fish - this question that worries many novice aquarists. In fact, the life of aquarium fish, like any other living creature, depends on the type, habitat comfort and proper care.
In addition, the life expectancy of fish, significantly depends on the population of the aquarium. If you make a "hostel" from the aquarium, then the life expectancy of the aquarium fish will dramatically decrease. It should be remembered about the compatibility of aquarium fish: the wrong choice of fish - do not live long. It should also be remembered that the fish are cool - their body temperature is equal to the water temperature. The higher the temperature of the water in the aquarium, the faster the metabolic processes in the body of the fish occur, and their life goes faster.

Goldfish: content at home

Goldfish, which marked the beginning of aquarism as such, are now, unfortunately, out of fashion. Professionals consider it uninteresting and not worthy of attention, and only a few connoisseurs and experts of this type remain. Therefore, the lot of most cinchons is kindergarten or hospital aquariums with plastic plants or a short life in a beautiful glass given to a person for the holiday, far from fish problems. Let us treat this beauty with the respect and interest that she deserves, and see what is necessary for her for a long and happy life near us.

How demanding are goldfish to conditions?

Opinions on this score are opposite. Some believe that this is a patient, practically unkillable, fish that survives in any conditions, suitable for beginners and people who do not want to invest in the aquarium a lot of effort and money. Others, on the contrary, argue that the content of gold must comply with a number of fairly tough conditions, and they are no doubt right. A goldfish should not be started by someone who is not ready to make efforts for its comfortable existence. And the most important condition for the maintenance of these fish is an aquarium of a sufficiently large volume.

Volume and shape of the aquarium

In Soviet literature of the last century in aquariums it is indicated that one goldfish should have 1.5-2 dm3 of water surface, or 7-15 liters of aquarium volume (15 liters per fish is considered to be a small landing density). This data migrated and in some modern tutorials. However, it should be noted that Soviet books were written about goldfish of domestic breeding, which for many generations lived in aquariums, and as a result of breeding were adapted to such conditions. At the present time, the vast majority of goldfish comes to us from China, Malaysia and Singapore, where they are massively bred in ponds. Accordingly, they are not adapted to life in small volumes of water, and even to a sufficiently spacious aquarium they need to be adapted, and a volume of 15-20 liters means death for them within a few days.

Experts who today work with goldfish brought from Asia have empirically established:

The minimum volume of an aquarium for one individual should be about 80 liters; in a smaller volume, an adult fish will simply have nowhere to move. For a couple - 100 l.

In large aquariums (200-250 l), with good filtration and aeration, the density of planting can be slightly increased, so that the volume of water is 35-40 liters per individual. And this is the limit!

Here, opponents of half-empty aquariums usually object that in zoos, for example, goldfish are very densely packed in aquariums and at the same time they feel great. Yes, indeed, this is the specificity of the exhibition aquariums. However, one should keep in mind that behind the frame there are several powerful filters with which this monster is equipped, the most severe schedule of water changes (up to half the volume daily or twice a day), as well as the regular ichthyopathologist veterinarian for whom there is always work.

Regarding the shape of the aquarium, the classical rectangular or with a slight curvature of the front glass is preferred, the length should be approximately twice the height. In the old Soviet literature it was stated that water should not be poured above the level of 30-35 cm, but as practice shows, this is not critical. Goldfish live well in higher aquariums, if they have the appropriate width and length (tall and narrow aquariums - screens and cylinders - are not suitable for keeping gold).

What types of fish are compatible gold?

The answer to this question is unequivocal - the best option would be a specific aquarium where only goldfish live. Moreover, even short-bodied and long-bodied gold lodging is often not recommended together, but representatives of other species of fish are out of the question. Either the neighbors will harass the scones, damaging their eyes and fins, or the neighbors themselves will be uncomfortable, as the aquarium with goldfish is a very peculiar habitat. In addition, small goldfish can simply swallow.

Water parameters, design and equipment of the aquarium

Goldfish comfortable with the following indicators of water:

  • temperature 20-23 °, for short-body forms slightly higher, 24-25 °;
  • pH of about 7;
  • stiffness not lower than 8 °.

The soil in the aquarium should be chosen so that the fish, digging into it, do not choke - its particles should be without sharp, protruding edges and either larger or much smaller than a fish mouth.

In the aquarium with goldfish must certainly be living plants. Consuming nitrogen, they have a positive effect on the ecological balance, are an additional substrate for bacteria performing biofiltration, and also serve as vitamin supplements for fish. Goldfish mercilessly dig in and gnaw plants, but this should not be the reason for refusing to populate the aquarium with lively greens.

Lemongrass, Anubias, cryptocoryne, Alterner, Bacopa, sagittaria, Javanese moss get along well with gold. It is recommended to plant the plants in pots so that the digging does not damage their roots. And as a top dressing, specifically give the fish a duckweed, Riccia, wolf, and a hornpole.

Mandatory good round-the-clock aeration. At a minimum, an aerator on the filter should be turned on; it is better to additionally have a compressor. If the aquarium has a high density of living plants, a powerful light and the supply of carbon dioxide is organized (in such conditions the leaves of the plants should be covered with bubbles of oxygen emitted by them), then the aerator is turned on only for the night.

In the design of the aquarium should not use large objects of decor - snags, grottoes, etc. Goldfish do not need shelter, but the fins of the valehvostoy, telescope eyes, growths about them are easy to injure, besides the shelters take up space for swimming.

Filtration and water changes

It is generally recognized that goldfish are a large biological load on an aquarium. Simply put, they are dirty, producing a huge amount of waste. Their habit of constantly rummaging in the ground, raising the dregs, also does not add cleanliness to the aquarium. In addition, goldfish excrement has a mucous consistency, and this mucus pollutes the soil and contributes to its rotting. Accordingly, in order to keep the water clean and transparent, a good round-the-clock filtration system is required.

The filter power should be at least 3-4 volumes of the aquarium per hour. The best option would be a canister external filter. If you can not buy it, and the volume of the aquarium does not exceed 100-120 liters, you can get by the internal filter - always with multiple sections and a compartment for ceramic filler.

Porous ceramics is a substrate for bacteria, which process poisonous ammonia released by fish into nitrites and then into much less toxic nitrates. In addition, the substrates for these bacteria, a stable amount of which is vital for the well-being of the aquarium, are soil and aquatic plants, especially small-leaved ones. Therefore, it is desirable to have a lot of plants, and the soil fraction should not be made too large.

In order for the colonies to not collapse when cleaning the aquarium, some rules must be observed: the filter sponges are washed in the aquarium water (the sponges are washed quite often, about once a week), the siphon of the soil is also weekly, done carefully, without mixing it layers, ceramic fillers for biofilters are always partially changed.

Even with high-quality filtration in an aquarium with goldfish, it is necessary to do weekly from a quarter to a third of the volume of the aquarium, and more often if the density of fish landing is violated. The fishes of this species tolerate fresh water well, so there is no need to defend it for more than a day.

Now that we have dealt with the main, most difficult and costly content of goldfish, we can talk about how and what to feed them.

They are usually fed twice a day, giving the amount of food that fish are able to eat within 3-5 minutes. Dry flakes and granules are recommended to alternate with vegetable food - spinach leaves, lettuce, boiled vegetables and cereals, fruits (orange, kiwi). Sometimes you can feed pieces of meat or liver, as well as frozen motils. It is necessary to take into account that the pellets of dry food should be soaked for 20-30 seconds in aquarium water, and thawed frozen food before giving them to fish. Very useful regular feeding live daphnia, which you can grow at home. In addition, as mentioned above, it is always better to have special food plants in an aquarium. Once a week, fasting days are arranged.

Diseases of goldfish are a subject for a separate article, but here we briefly consider only signs that may indicate that the fish are sick or have severe discomfort:

  • loss of appetite;
  • lowered dorsal fin;
  • bulging scales, red or black spots that quickly appear, ulcers, rashes, mucous or cotton-like plaque;
  • distended abdomen and bulging eyes stronger than usual;
  • unnatural behavior: the fish stays in the corner of the aquarium for a long time, lies at the bottom, rolling over on its side, or swimming near the surface, swallowing air from it;
  • rolling over while swimming.

It should be noted that with proper maintenance of health problems in goldfish are quite rare. If you initially create good conditions for these animals (a spacious aquarium with live plants and powerful filtration), then care of them will be available to the beginner or even to the child, and for many years they will delight their owner with bright appearance and funny behavior.

Contrary to popular belief that goldfish are easy to care for, there are still some subtleties on which it depends how much goldfish live and how much fun and interesting it will be in your tank, and you will watch them.
So, a goldfish will delight you with its beauty for a long time if you provide it with a spacious aquarium with a moderate population density (at the rate of 50 liters of water per fish). Moreover, goldfish are very poorly compatible with other species, they either eat their neighbors themselves, or they will be eaten by them.
Then, it is necessary to take care of a good system of filtration and aeration of water, its weekly substitution.
And, of course, you need to provide the fish with a varied and balanced diet, but in no case should you overfeed them, as this will lead to diseases and worsening of their condition.
And yet, how many live goldfish? No accurate data. But according to different sources, subject to the above rules, your pet may well live 6-8 years, this is the maximum period for aquarium keeping of goldfish.

How many years has GOLDEN FISH?

Natalina Yurieva

Goldfish can rightly be called one of the most popular and common inhabitants of aquariums. Many inexperienced aquarists start with this breed of fish, as it is quite unpretentious and does not require any special care. However, if every beginner is aware of the rules of leaving, then not everyone will answer the question of how much goldfish live.
Specialists also do not have a unanimous opinion about how many goldfish live. Some determine the duration of their life of three or four years, and some - ten or even fifteen. There is a case when a goldfish lived for 34 years (it happened in one of Moscow zoos).
Almost all modern fish are "natives" of Asian nurseries located in Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, and so on. Such specimens do not live for a long time, as they often get into aquariums, already being contaminated with non-treatable diseases.
In any case, the longevity of goldfish, as well as other inhabitants of the aquarium, depends primarily on the conditions of maintenance. In particular, the size of the aquarium is of great importance - experienced aquarists say that in order for a goldfish to live for 7-10 years, an aquarium of 150-200 liters is needed. An important role is also played by maintaining cleanliness in the aquarium: its regular cleaning and water replacement. And of course, the quality of food consumed by fish cannot but affect their health and longevity.

Some live a few months, others for many years.
In short, the life of a small fish zinolebias living in South America. This fish lives in reservoirs that are filled with water only in the rainy season. Before the onset of drought, the fish lays its eggs in the mud. Soon the reservoir dries out. The fish die, and the roe is stored in dry mud for several months. When the pond is again filled with rainwater, the larvae hatch from the eggs. In two or three months they become adults and lay eggs.
Less than a year live luminous anchovies - deep-sea pelagic fish. For two, two and a half years a round goby, a commercial fish of the Black and Caspian seas, lives.
Only about three years old, there lives a small Black Sea hamsa fish. She was known as a commercial fish in the III century BC. During the excavations in the Crimea, weights are still found from the nets with which the hamsa was caught and the tanks in which they were salted. Hamsa was highly regarded in ancient Greece and Rome.
Far Eastern salmon - chum, pink salmon - die at the age of 5-7 years. Cod, herring and grouper live to be 25-30 years old. Carp fishes (roach, chub, bream) live comparatively long (8-15).
Little studied shark life span. It would seem that such large fish should be durable. In fact, their age, apparently, no more than 25-30 years.
In the aquarium to 30-35 years old live goldfish.
An eel of ichthyology lived for 37 years with one German ichthyologist, and a hundred-year-old eel still lives in a well in a small Swedish town in the well. He was put in a well by a larva in 1859.
But so long eels live only in captivity. Under natural conditions, their life expectancy is no more than 25 years.
Durable carp. It was believed that he lived 100 or even 200 years. But now ichthyologists have more accurate data and argue that the age of carp is 40-45 years old.
Sturgeon lives for about 50 years, catfish live to 40 years.
A lot of unreliable was written about the longevity of the pike.
The authors of some books claimed that near Moscow in 1794, when cleaning the Tsaritsyn ponds, they caught a pike with a gold ring on the gill cover. The inscription on the ring allegedly was engraved: "Tsar Boris Fedorovich planted it." Boris Godunov reigned from 1598 to 1605, which means that the pike should have been about 200 years old. But since no evidence has been preserved, scientists consider this fact to be doubtful.
Known legends about the shock of Emperor Frederick II Barbarossa. It was also ringed and, as indicated on the ring, it was launched in 1230 either in the lake near Geyborn, not in the Kaiserlautern area. This pike was caught in 1497, that is, after 267 years. Its image was preserved until recently in the castle Lautern, and the skeleton and the ring - in Mannheim.
Scientists are interested in pike. They read the inscription on the ring; she said: "I am the same fish that Frederick II planted in this pond with my own hands on October 5, 1230." The study of archival materials showed that at that time the emperor was in Italy and could not put a pike in a pond. Later, the vertebrae were counted in the skeleton. They turned out to be too many; it became obvious that they could have owned one pike. That was a fake.
Currently, ichthyologists believe that the maximum age of pike is 100 years.
In addition to pike, the beluga reaches the centenary. Apparently, this is the most durable fish.
