Chromis fish

How to care for a handsome chromis

Chromis is handsome, hemichromis handsome (lat. Hemichromis bimaculatus) is a fish of the Cichloridae family (Cichlids). Wild chromis inhabit the Congo River in Central Africa. Also found in freshwater bodies of Southern Guinea and Liberia. Keep in the middle and lower layers of water. Diet - fry of other fish, invertebrates and insects.

External characteristics, behavior

Chromis handsome man - is a fish that has an incredibly beautiful appearance. No wonder its name sounds in English as “Jewel Cichlid” (jewel cichlid, treasure). However, the appearance is deceptive - the nature of the fish is quite aggressive and unpredictable. There have been cases when, due to the wrong neighborhood, the owners of domestic aquariums have found the disappearance of other fish. The mistake was that chromis did not show friendliness to small and slow fish, such as neons, guppies, danios and others.

The color of the body of the fish is red, even bright purple, there are prominent blotches of greenish color on the body, which twinkle in light, resembling the brilliance of precious stones. A black spot passes through the body. The average size of an adult chromis is 13-15 cm. About 5 years live in captivity.

Sexual dimorphism is weakly expressed; there is no exact method for distinguishing the male from the female. It is believed that during spawning the males acquire a brighter color, in females the belly is rounded. Form a pair at an early age, after which they are settled in a separate aquarium, where there is no competition.

Conditions of detention

The maintenance of aquarium fish Chromis handsome is not difficult, even a novice amateur hobbyist. The error of some newbies is to keep them in a common aquarium with fish that cannot be compatible with. African cichlids are more suitable neighbors.

Chromises are unpretentious aquarium pets. Successful maintenance is possible in a tank of 70-100 liters per adult. Shelters in the form of snags, caves, thickets are also needed. Of course, cichlids pull out plants from the ground along with the roots, so large hard-leaved plants with strong roots will do (anubiases, cryptocorynes, elodea).

As the ground, you can use large pebbles or gravel. If you lay out the bottom of the tank with sand, the fish will raise a strong turbidity. Clean water is also important. Use an external filter and compressor. Siphon bottom and fresh water update are recommended once a week, 20% of the total. Acceptable parameters of the aquatic environment: temperature 25-28 degrees Celsius, acidity - 7.0.-7.5 pH, water hardness - 10-12 o.

Social behavior

Chromis handsome man gets along with other fish in the general nursery, if the neighbors are chosen correctly. Content is permissible with average African cichlids who are willing to stand up for themselves. Among them: bees, akaras turquoise, akars blue-spotted, black-striped cichlids, pelvic chromis, lion-headed cichla (steatocranus). Compatibility is possible with strong medium fish of other species: tetra from Congo, catfish.

No less important is the compatibility of chromis with each other. Since the fish has a territorial behavior, especially during spawning, you need to be especially observant. During this period, producers are aggressive to other fish, so if you count on a successful breeding, it is better to keep a couple in a separate aquarium. Also, a handsome young chromis chooses a pair from the group of young stock, with which he grows together.

How to feed

Chromis handsome eats all kinds of food, but to saturate the body color can be given food with a high content of carotene. Live feed: tube maker, bloodworm, artemia, shrimp, mussels, fish fillets, live food for him dainty. You can add to the diet of plant foods: food with spirulina, lettuce. It feeds on all cichlid feed, both live, artificial and frozen.

Breeding rules

Like many tsikhlovye fish, chromis are monogamous, choosing a pair among the young, will be with her all his life. Finding the right female for a male is very difficult - not only is sexual dimorphism barely noticeable, it’s not always possible to choose a candidate. Reproduction and breeding of fry is possible only if the fish are accustomed to each other and do not fight. If you do not approach each other, they should be immediately deposited. When buying a pair of chromis, observe the behavior of the fish. Wounds, ragged fins, deaths - the consequences of incompatibility. If the fish liked each other, they will be peaceful, friendly, and during spawning they will repaint in bright shades. When the female is not ready to spawn, the male can intimidate her, and she will hide for a long time.

Look at a pair of chromis with fry.

Breeding occurred when the female laid 200-500 eggs on a smooth, cleaned stone with a flat surface. Fry larvae appear after 48 hours, and both parents look after them. The female collects them in her mouth, transfers them to another place until the brood eats the entire contents of the yolk sac. Later the fry will swim, after about 3 days. Males and females have a strong parental instinct - they protect the entire territory where they live with their babies, without allowing anyone. You can not move the stone on which the eggs are deposited, to another place or an aquarium, otherwise the producers will eat them. Starter feed for fry of chromis - nautilia artemia. Unfortunately, the fry grow in different ways, and as they grow they need to be sorted, settling in other tanks. Parents protect offspring until they grow to a size of 1 cm in length.

Freshwater African Cichlian are hardy aquarium fish, however, they do not acclimatize so quickly in the conditions of a new dwelling. They need to settle in an aquarium with parameters similar to the previous dwelling. Check these details with the seller. 2-3 weeks they adapt to a new “home”, they are a bit shy and shy.

Handsome chromises: how to properly care

This fish deserves its name: adults are really amazingly beautiful. Large, slender, crimson or ruby color, covered with shining turquoise specks - it is impossible not to pay attention to them. However, even those who fell in love with them at first sight, it is worth finding out what kind of fish it is - handsome chromis, how it behaves in the aquarium and what conditions need to be created for it.

Under the name chromis-handsome in our zootorgovle can meet representatives of several species of the genus Gemihromis:

  1. Hemichromis lifalili. This species is currently found most often, its correct Russian name is red chromis, or red cichlid.
  2. Hemichromis guttatus. This Latin name is usually indicated for handsome chromis, but studies of the St. Petersburg ichthyologist V. Kovalev showed that not always real fish correspond to the description of this species in the classical determinants.
  3. Hemichromis bimaculatus is rare, its representatives do not have blue dots on the body, only on the fins.

It is likely that at the present time many handsome chromises are hybrids of several species.

Chromis-handsome refers to African cichlids, in nature, common in the tributaries of the Congo River. Length up to 10-15 cm, the body can be painted in different shades of red - from brownish to shining scarlet, with even rows of turquoise-blue glitter. On each body of fish there are four dark (sometimes greenish) spots on each side: near the eye, on the edge of the gill cover, on the side and at the base of the tail. Often with age, these spots practically disappear.

The difference between males and females is not very pronounced and noticeable only in adult fish: females are usually brighter and brighter than males, males have more pronounced crimson and lilac shades, females have fewer blue spots on their bodies.

Young fish that have not yet formed pairs and have not started spawning have a much more modest color: grayish, sometimes with a faint pink tinge.

Fish is very unpretentious. For a couple of handsome men, an aquarium of 60 liters is enough, although, of course, it is better to choose a more spacious tank so that the fish have enough space for movement. The temperature of the water is 22-28 ° C, pH 6-8, the hardness can vary widely. Aquarium must be closed with a lid, because chromis is wonderful jumping. Their jumping ability should be borne in mind when cleaning the aquarium: chromis deposited in a basin or bucket will then have to be collected all over the apartment, and it’s good if a cat or dog doesn't get to them.

An aquarium is usually decorated with large, flat stones, setting them on top of one another and thus forming shelters. The smaller pebbles enclose the roots of living plants, if they exist, since these beauties very ugly dig the soil and dig up the greens, especially in the period of preparation for spawning. Plants should be large, with strong and tough stems and leaves and a developed, strong root system. As the soil is usually used fine gravel, without sharp edges.

Chromis-handsome are pronounced predators, so they prefer food of animal origin. It can be a live or frozen bloodworm or (sometimes, but not constantly!) A pipe maker, chopped earthworms and crickets, fish and seafood. Chromis like when the pieces of food are large enough. Feel good on a balanced dry diet with high protein content.

Behavior and Compatibility

The fishes are territorial and quite malicious, especially during spawning and when caring for offspring. During this period, they attack all the surrounding fish, and neighbors in the aquarium can suffer greatly, even death. Aggression manifests itself equally to individuals of its own species, as well as to representatives of other taxa. When trying to form a pair or if the spawning is unsuccessful, the fish can kill the unloved partner.

Although, it must be said that at the present time chromis in aquariums have become more compliant, since, apparently, the aggressive look of H. guttatus was supplanted by H. lifalili and its hybrids similar to him externally, but smaller and relatively peaceful. Therefore, it is believed that a pair of handsome chromis can be kept together with other species of similar size, active and not offensive, in a spacious aquarium with a volume of at least 200 l with thickets of plants and plenty of shelters. However, it is still quite risky: handsome chromises manage to catch and devour even nimble and not harmless Sumatran barbs in minutes. Therefore, we would recommend settling a pair of fish of this species in a separate, albeit small, apartment, where they will not offend anyone, and they themselves will feel calmer and be able to breed and raise offspring.

Steam formation

Handsome Chromises prefer to choose a pair for themselves. This process is rather complicated, and not every member of the opposite sex is considered by chromis as a potentially spouse. The more common now in H. lifalili aquariums are females more aggressive than males, so if you want to form a pair from a group of fish, it is better that the males in this group be older and larger than the females. However, in young fish that have not yet acquired adult coloring, it is extremely difficult to distinguish between the sex. After pairing, the remaining individuals should be removed from the aquarium to avoid scuffles and fish death.

Preparing for spawning and spawning

Sexual maturity chromium-handsome reach at the age of 6-7 months.

In good conditions, they are very easy and almost continuously spawn in the general aquarium, therefore, as a rule, it is not necessary to stimulate spawning from them. You can slightly raise the temperature, soften and acidify the water.

Before spawning, chromis females become even brighter, sometimes to the point that they begin to glow as neon advertising, and their belly thickens noticeably. Fish dig the soil, pull out plants, shift stones and decor, preparing a place for spawning to your taste. If at this time in the aquarium there are other fish or fry from the previous litter of the pair, it is better to isolate them as soon as possible.

Substrate for caviar can be a flat stone, a leaf of a plant, a crock of a flowerpot. The female lays its eggs on this surface with a rather wide stripe, the male fertilizes it afterwards. Eggs have a cream or brownish color.

The pair takes care of the caviar together, fanning it with fins, removing the dead eggs and actively protecting the eggs from their neighbors, if any. Chromises are magnificent parents, and cases of eating one’s own caviar or leaving it to fend are usually found only in very young fish who spawn for the first time. Therefore, if only a pair of chromis live in an aquarium, it is not necessary to transfer eggs to the incubator. If, however, the eggs must be removed from the aquarium, then it is usually pointless to remove the producers with it: they don’t have parental interest to the migrated laying, only food. Therefore, if chromis live in a common aquarium, and you want to get and raise their offspring, a couple is deposited in the spawning pool in advance so that the caviar is put there already.

Larvae and fry

The larvae hatch usually after 4-5 days, feed on the contents of the yolk sac for several days, then begin to swim and feed. Parents take care of them at this stage, collect them into a hole dug in the ground or under a shard, guard, and walk in a flock. I must say that the spectacle is absolutely fascinating! Actually, in order to observe this, people turn on cichlids. However, despite such trepid care, in the general aquarium with other fishes it is most often impossible to save the fry. On the other hand, if the family has a separate living space, there are no problems with growing babies, they easily rise on the nauplii of Artemia, daphnia and cyclope (you can use freezing), shrimp and mussels passed through the blender, and even egg yolk and dry food. After a fairly short time, you can begin to give the shredder. Of course, in the period of active growth of fry, maintaining hygiene in the aquarium at the proper level, daily sifting of the bottom and water changes are of great importance.

When the fry reach a length of 8--10 mm, they are isolated from their parents, the same is done if adult chromis demonstrate an intention to start a new spawning.

In a word, there is nothing difficult in the content or reproduction of this fish, and the costs of its character are more than offset by incredible beauty, intelligence and parental qualities. Therefore, handsome chromuses are so popular in the aquarium world, and this popularity will most likely only increase.

A small video review about handsome chromis.

Chromis handsome - aggressive and bright

Probably everyone at least once in his life, but felt that indescribable feeling of delight at the sight of superbly decorated artificial reservoirs. But their beauty could not be so bright without their unique inhabitants, each of which is different both in its color and size. Therefore, it is not surprising that all owners of aquariums are trying to diversify their vessel to the maximum, adding new bright inhabitants to it. But there are fish, the beauty of which is simply breathtaking. And in today's article we will talk about this fish, and more specifically about Chromis Krasavtse.

As it becomes clear from the very name - this fish has a stunningly beautiful appearance. This is particularly pronounced when it reaches puberty. But before you start talking about the features of its maintenance, feeding or breeding, consider what it is.

Male and female Chromis with characteristic black spots

So, handsome chromis or his closest brother by the type of red chromis is a representative of African cichlids. In their natural habitat, these fish are found in tributaries of the Congo River. The maximum size of an adult individual is 100-150 mm. The exterior color of the body can be either in red, brown or blue. Also, their distinctive feature is the presence of 4 dark spots located on the sides, as shown in the photo below. Sometimes, due to age changes, these marks may disappear.

Males have slightly faded colors in contrast to females. An interesting fact is that in his youth Chromis handsome man does not quite match his name because of the much more modest color color.

Photo of Chromis

As a rule, handsome chromis is a fairly demanding in the care of fish. So, their content is placed in a spacious artificial pond with a volume of not less than 60 liters. and maintaining a comfortable temperature regime of 22-28 degrees. Remember that the hardness of the water should not vary in large ranges.

Also, the comfortable content of these fish depends on the design of the soil. So, a good solution would be to place small, rounded pebbles on it, creating shelters of various heights.

That is why, when planning their maintenance, it is necessary to take into account that food of animal origin is most suitable for them as food.

Basic diet:

  • Motyl
  • Tube maker
  • Rain worms
  • Small fishes

It is also worth noting that handsome chromis prefers to eat pieces of large food.

Quite interesting is the reproduction of these fish. Thus, just before spawning, the male selects a mate for himself, with which he will spawn. It would seem that there is an unusual, but this is where the main difficulty lies, since with the wrong choice made, these aquarium fish can also kill each other. Therefore, in order for their breeding to occur successfully, in the first days, after the formation of pairs, it is necessary to carefully observe the fish - how reproduction will occur. Also, experienced aquarists recommend using larger and older males as prospective partners for females, the photos of which can be seen below.

After all the pairs have formed, it is necessary to remove the remaining applicants from the artificial reservoir in order to avoid their death.

Preparing to spawn

These fish are sexually mature when they reach 6-7 months. It is also worth noting that when creating comfortable conditions in an artificial reservoir, they can spawn in the general vessel without any problems. In addition, if the need arises, then they can be stimulated for reproduction by raising the temperature slightly and softening and acidifying the aqueous medium.

An interesting fact is that just before spawning, the color of these fish acquires more saturated colors, and in some cases they even begin to glow, in many ways resembling neon advertising signs, as shown in the photo below. They also begin to actively prepare the nest, digging a hole in the ground for this purpose, or forming it from stones or plants.

Make sure that there are no fry or litter of the previous pair nearby during spawning.

Fish are excellent parents, so you can not to worry about how to eat future fry, and leaving them to fend for themselves.

Chromis fry

As a rule, the first larvae appear at the end of 4-5 days. As food they use the contents of the yolk sac. But after a few days, they may already be able to independently feed on daphnia, nauplii and artemia. Adult individuals all this time do not cease to care about the younger generation for a minute without leaving them. It is recommended to set fry away from parents only when they reach 8-9 mm in length.

Remember that although there are no particular difficulties in breeding these fish, it is not a bad thing to make a daily replacement of 1/3 of the total water.

Representatives of this species have a rather aggressive nature of behavior. This is especially noticeable at the time of choosing a partner for spawning and grooming their offspring. And although recently you can see a slight indulgence in their character, but most aquarists are advised to place these fish in a separate artificial pond, where they will delight their owner with their appearance.

Watch an interesting video about the beautiful fish Chromis:

Bright aquarium fishes of the handsome chromis species always attract attention to themselves due to the pale blue spots of specks located in straight rows and two large dark green spots against the background of a bright red body. The length of the handsome chromis fish does not exceed 12 centimeters in females and 15 centimeters in males.

The body of the fish is strong, moderately high, the head is slightly pointed, and the mouth is large. Due to its appearance, handsome chromis fish is considered one of the most beautiful. When a fish is calm, its fins and body have a smooth dark red color. The back is tinged with an olive tinge, and the abdomen and lower part of the head are saturated red. Unpaired fins and torso are dotted with shiny blue specks. Four rounded black spots stand out against their background, one of which is the eye. Such marks in the life of males play an important role, as they are fighters by nature, and the presence of spots that mimic the eyes saves from attacks and helps deceive the opponent. The females are different in that their color is more orange-red, and the blue sequin on the body is much smaller.

There is a separate subspecies - handsome neon chromis, whose representatives differ in their characteristic luminous color.

Content in an aquarium

As already noted, these beautiful and unusual fish in nature are very vicious, quarrelsome and pugnacious. If you put the chromis in a common aquarium, then you will watch fights all the time. They will stop only when the chromis destroy all neighbors. That is why experienced aquarists insist that the content of handsome hromis in the general "house" is not possible.

The homeland of this species of fish is West Africa, but in the aquarium comfortable living and even the reproduction of handsome chromis is quite real. Water temperature for fish should be in the range of 22-24 degrees. Chromis handsome pretty unpretentious, if you do not take into account the need for separate content. By the way, the only ones with whom the handsome chromis gets on are Hemichromis fasciatus and cichlids of similar size and character. The fact is that cichlids, like handsome chromis, are predators. After acquaintance and grind down, the fights will disappear.

If you decide to start breeding handsome Chromis, get a separate aquarium for one or more liters. It is necessary to maintain a temperature of 26-28 degrees. To spawn the handsome chromis was successful, the aquarium should be well washed, the sand removed, and two ceramic pots and a few flat stones should be laid sideways on the bottom, because these fish are lithophilic, that is, the eggs are laid on the stones.

After the eggs appear on the stones, which are usually no more than a thousand, the fish begin to actively protect the territory, constantly swimming over future offspring.

For parents of handsome chromis, both parents care carefully. Fry grow very quickly with proper feeding. When they grow up to one centimeter in length, parents should be transplanted. Young chromis love food, consisting of daphnia, cut pipemaker, Cyclops. Occasionally, they can be given scrapped beef. After six months, the young grow to sexual maturity, and the length of the fish is seven centimeters.

Selecting a couple, it should be borne in mind that females are more aggressive than males, therefore the latter must be large and older in age.

The health of the fish is strong enough, but if you notice signs of handsome chromis disease, increase the water temperature to 32 degrees for one week, and add salt (five grams per liter) to the water. Not be redundant and aeration.

If you want to replenish your aquarium with another exotic fish, you will certainly like the sea fish Chromis. But before buying a couple of other members of the Pomatsentrov family, it is important to bear in mind that they are predators and have a rather aggressive disposition.

Chromis Handsome

Predatory chromis family

Having launched a representative of the tropical seas in your aquarium - the Chromis fish, you and your guests will not only admire and enjoy such exotic beauty. The small size 3-15 cm Chromis attracts with its elongated body bright red hues with iridescent blue-green scales. The contrast of colors suggests their habitat in nature, as well as an aggressive mood. Thanks to the four black spots that are present on the body of the fish, chromis has adapted to survive in nature and defend itself against the enemy. In an aquarium, a container with a volume of 200 liters will get along with several pairs of this species of fish. The temperature of the water in the aquarium for warm-water chromis should not fall below the mark of 25 degrees, do not forget about water filtration.

An adult and ready-to-spawn aquarium fish can reach quite small sizes: the male is 7–8 cm, and the female is even smaller. But even with such small parameters, their "apartments" should be spacious and with "amenities".

Sea fish - life aquarium

So that the content of chromis brings only positive emotions and costs without losses for pets, try either to acquire only one married couple of fish, or, having bought several individuals, do not regret on a large aquarium. The most natural habitat for chromis is an aquarium with driftwood, stones, algae with a strong root system, as well as artificial caves laid on the bottom. For hooligan chromis, this is no less important than correct feeding. This fidget loves poking around in the ground, pulling out plants and often shkodit, not only the male, but also the female.

Being a predator and eating invertebrates in nature, in its "home" menu, chromis prefers to see live and frozen fish, worms, bloodworms, insect larvae, sliced meat, dry plants or, in extreme cases, artificial food.

Favorable reproduction in captivity

If you decide to breed chromis, approach the period of spawning seriously and responsibly. The main thing that needs to be done when preparing for spawning is a comfortable spawning ground. Chromis loves a clean and prepared "nest", thoroughly ennobled by spawning tanks, in which stones are placed. It is on them that the eggs of the future fry will be laid.

Replant spawning chromis-mom and chromis-dad. Carefully follow the period of ejection of female eggs, because from this moment the male should be transplanted back to the aquarium. The female will be in spawning until the fry appear and grow up to 2 weeks of age. And only then you can replant it in the aquarium.

After the appearance of chromic fry, you have worries. Proper nutrition and cleanliness of the aquarium is a direct path to the full growth of new Chromis individuals. Feeding start with a smaller food - Cyclops and Daphnia, and then go to a larger one. Maintain proper cleanliness and even greater care than with adult representatives of Chromis.

Chromis butterfly: the rules of care and maintenance

Chromis butterfly, or remisi apistogramma is not only beautiful, but also intelligent fish. But they, like many others, need special conditions and proper care.

Some aquarium fish are very impatient with their neighbors. But the remisto apistogram is quite a friendly and accommodating look. In addition, the fish themselves are very beautiful, and their behavior is often called meaningful. These qualities have made the remirez fish very popular in aquariums.

The appearance of the chromis butterfly and its sex differences

The chromis butterfly (Venezuelan butterfly, remisisi apistogram) is a dwarf cichlid whose origin was America. The extent to which a fish grows up depends largely on the conditions that are created for it.

In a small aquarium, chromis will grow only 3.5 cm in length. If for each individual you provide a volume of water of at least 20 liters, in six months it will reach 6-7 centimeters.

The body of chromis has a yellow-brown color, with a red and orange tint in its front.

Venezuelan butterflies are distinguished by sex. When spawning time begins, the color of the male becomes bright red. Females have a crimson color of the abdomen. They also differ from males by shorter dorsal and ventral fins.

Like other cichlid species, butterfly chromis creates stable pairs. For the normal functioning of each such pair, it is necessary to provide them with 60 liters of water.

You need to choose live plants for the aquarium, since the fish have an increased sensitivity to ammonia and nitrates. In addition, they need to prepare a shallow soil.

Unlike many relatives, Venezuelan butterflies do not bully in aquariums, do not damage plants.

During spawning, they can make small holes in the ground, but they are not as radical as in many representatives of cichlids.

Chromis butterfly is also sensitive to the water, which must be clean, so without a good aquarium filter is simply not enough.

In order for the fish to be seen in more detail and to see their beauty, it is necessary to provide the aquarium with good lighting.

It is important to ensure that Venezuelan butterflies have a weakly acidic, soft water with a temperature of 24 to 32 ° C. If the chemistry of the water does not fit the fish, it can get sick and die. To control all indicators of water, you can purchase a special aquarium test. It takes place very quickly, and you can be sure that your pets are completely safe.

The diet of the butterfly apistogram must be varied. You can not give her one type of food for a long time, even if it is expensive and firm.

Chromis butterfly prefers live food. You can also give frozen bloodworms or tubers.

If you like to cook food yourself, use recipes that are specially developed for ornamental fish farming.

Chromis butterfly overfeeding can not be. In addition, a lot of food residue will cause the water in the aquarium to become dirty. This, in turn, will lead to fish disease. But if the amount of feed is low, let it sink to the bottom.

The butterflies life is near-bottom, so they will look for something tasty on the bottom of the aquarium while searching every pebble or plant. In view of this, do not worry that some of the feed will rot. But there is no need to pour a lot of food into the aquarium.

Giving dry food to fish should be very careful. It can only be used from time to time, besides, it is worth choosing only a trusted manufacturer.

Butterflies need more attention during spawning chromis. As already mentioned, they create stable pairs and can care for caviar and fry that have appeared. While caring for offspring, males show more perseverance and activity than females.

Apistogram can spawn in the general aquarium. However, very often it ends with the loss of offspring: eggs and fry are eaten like other fish and the butterflies themselves.

Despite their organization, they can also leave their spawn unattended. The fact is that for many years of breeding in aquariums, many fish have lost their parental instinct.

If the couple is chosen correctly, you can watch how they will hide the eggs from the fry and choose from the clutch the eggs that died.

However, the best solution would be to equip a spawning tank and temporarily relocate a couple there. To lay eggs, the female will look for a hard surface. The incubation period lasts 2-4 days, after which the fry begin to swim actively. It is better to remove the female at this time from the aquarium where the fry live.

Butterfly apistogram is a great object to observe. You will be able to observe their entire life in an aquarium: from courtship to the appearance of fry and care for them.
