The smallest fish in the world

In the past few decades, such a direction as a nano aquarium began to develop in the aquarium business. The name speaks for itself - these are small aquariums with a capacity of up to 30 liters, as a rule. Of course, special fish become the inhabitants of nano aquariums - the smallest ones.

Liliput fish

Wildlife is diverse, it has a lot of unusual. Who would have thought that the smallest fish in the world lives in water, the acidity of which is about 100 times higher than neutral rainwater! But it is so.

Lilliput fish, only 8 millimeters long, is found in some Indonesian swamps of the island of Sumatra. Scientists, taking it first as a fry, gave her the Latin name Paedocypris Progenetica, classified as the closest relative of the famous danios from the carp family, and recognized as the smallest vertebrate animals on the planet.

To survive in extreme conditions, evolution eliminated Paedocypris Progenetica from many of the functional characteristics of the vast majority of fish:

  • the body is almost transparent,
  • the bone skeleton consists of several tiny vertebrae,
  • there are no signs of a skull, which makes the miniature brain completely unprotected.

The female of this fish lays only a few eggs, almost invisible to the human eye. It is not known for certain whether such a fish is kept at home.

In the Philippines, there is another Lilliput - mystichtis. Tiny 13mm bulls are well known to the locals, who make them very tasty dried cakes. Because of this, the fish is now becoming increasingly rare and is on the verge of complete extinction.

The smallest fish in Europe is considered to be Gilet's dwarf bull. This small animal was found in the sea near the Shetland Islands. The fish has a color that allows it to easily merge with the bottom covered with shells, which makes it difficult to study its structure and habits well.

Rasbory - tiny inhabitants of aquariums

Rasbor, or microassembly, as they are sometimes called, are the smallest known inhabitants of miniature aquariums. This does not apply to all varieties of these domestic fish.

Of course, there are rasbor about 2.5 centimeters long. Giants among the pygmies! But here Boraras micros (micro, or baby), as well as Boraras naevus (rasbori nevi) in adulthood do not exceed 13 mm.

Under natural conditions, these representatives of the carp family live in freshwater reservoirs of Southeast Asia with a weak current. Thanks to the development of nano aquariums, rasbor became quite popular.

Fish are considered unpretentious, but the parameters of the water for their content is very important. The fact is that in nature they are accustomed to soft water with high acidity (pH is only 4 units), so the first time for them you need to create similar conditions.

Gradually, by changing the water, the level of acid-base balance is adjusted to 6-6.5 units, and the water hardness - to normal for the area. It takes about two months for such acclimatization at home, and then the fish get used to new water parameters. Its temperature must be maintained in the range from +24 to +28 degrees.

Rasbory is an insectivorous animal. In the home aquarium, they can be fed frozen food, such as daphnia or artemia.

But, according to the opinion of reputable aquarists, it is better to give rassom live food - nematodes (microworms, as they are called). This is especially important if you plan to breed these aquarium babies. Of course, the feed should be small.

To make the fish feel in conditions close to natural, the bottom of the aquarium is covered with leaves of trees, small snags are set. Gradually, the leaves in the water decompose, becoming the habitat of various microorganisms.

The tannins released during decomposition help to reduce the hardness of the water and change its color to a darker one.

Fish usually contain flocks of 6 to 15 individuals in aquariums with a capacity of not more than 30 liters.

Breeding Boraras micros

The probability of reproduction increases if rasborov fed live food. During the creation of a pair, the yellow color of the males becomes very bright, and the bodies of the females on the contrary turn pale, their abdomen swells.

Spawning fish is so fast that it can not be noticed.

Eggs are deposited, as a rule, on the leaves of aquarium plants. In total, the eggs, which the male takes care of at the first stage, are very few - from 12 to 18.

Immediately after the end of the incubation period, the male completely ceases to pay attention to the offspring. But it's not scary, because rasbory do not eat fry.

In principle, a couple of rasbor - the smallest aquarium fish - can be kept in the liter nano aquarium. But the most impressive will be the aquarium from 15 liters, where there is enough space for the flock of these frisky babies. True, in domestic pet stores Boraras micros are quite rare.

The most unpretentious and small aquarium fish with photos

The most unpretentious aquarium fish, the smallest aquarium fish. TOP 10 DIFFICULT FISHERS Keeping fish is not as difficult as it sounds. However, aquarium fish, like any living creature, require care and time, which many people, by virtue of employment, simply do not have !!! This topic is left based on the following requirements for aquarium fish: unpretentious fish, small fish, easy-to-keep fish, the most enduring aquarium fish, tenacious fish, easy-working fish. 1 place Guppy

I think many aquarium fish experts will agree that the first place is given to guppes.

Everyone probably knows these fish ... even those who have never seen aquariums. We can say that these fish are the fish of all children of the former USSR (they were in all Soviet aquariums))). The fish is very beautiful and unpretentious. The tail fin is her beauty. The simplicity of the fish is that it can withstand "harsh conditions of detention." I happened to see an aquarium with guppies. without aeration, without filtering, without plants, without proper feeding etc. - horror, terrible dream aquarist. Nevertheless, guppies managed not only to survive in such an aquarium, but even tried to multiply. So you shouldn't mock the fish !!! But their endurance and vitality sometimes affects.

GUPPI - THIS IS A SYMBIOSIS: BEAUTY, INNONTAINTH AND EASY + SUPPLEMENTS REPLACE "AS A KROL" INDEPENDENTLY - YOU WILL ALWAYS UPDATE "AQUARIUM PAINTS" WILL READ ABOUT GUPS more details

2nd place Swordtails

A very famous fish, as a result of persistent selection, a large number of swordtails of various colors and shapes were bred. Males are distinguished from females by the presence of a "sword" on the lower edge of the caudal fin.

Swordtails are kept in flocks in a densely planted aquarium. The minimum size of the aquarium from 10 liters (but better is more). A good volume of aquarium for a small group of swordtails is 50 liters.

An interesting fact about these fish is that the female swordtail can “at some” moment become a male, i.e. change the floor. This is due to the struggle for the survival of the species.

HOW AND GUPPI ARE RECOMMENDED, ALL THOSE WHO DO NOT WANT TO DEAD WITH THE AQUARIUM.

3rd place Somiki corridors

It should begin with the fact that all aquarium catfish - a priori unpretentious. Moreover, they are "nurses of the aquarium world": they clean the soil and eat the remains of vital activity. The corridors are chosen from all catfish, since in addition to the gill, they have intestinal respirationi.e. if aeration stops, they will live for a long time.

The fish are very peaceful, calm. They slowly swim along the bottom in search of food. In the aquarium they are usually kept in flocks. Fish, do not pose any threat to other inhabitants of the aquarium.

You can read more about CORRIDORATUSES here ...

4th place Mollies

Molly, like guppies - viviparous fishes. Unpretentious and tolerant of poor conditions. Nevertheless, they are more capricious than the “troika winners”.

Fish suitable for beginners and young aquarists. The fishes most difficult to keep from all members of the family are demanding of conditions, they do not tolerate low temperatures, some like “salty” water, like bright light, etc.

You can read more about MOLLINESIA here ...

5th place Tetras - Harazinki

All tetras are small, brisk, not capricious fishes. However, they will not be able to survive in "Spartan conditions" as guppies. They need aeration and filtration. You can keep them in an aquarium by a group (from 5 individuals) with a volume of at least 35 liters of water.

You can read more about TETRAH here ...

6th place Ternetsii

Very famous little fish. Fish energetic, mobile. Fish get along well with other types of fish. Somehow my terntions even lived with small cichlids. Recommended aquarium with a volume of at least 30 liters of water, densely planted with plants. Aeration, filtration - yes!

You can read more about TERNIA here ...

7th place Danio (rerio, pink)

Starting from the 5th place TOP, all the fish require unpretentious attention. Tanks are different from them - briskness and speed of movement. They can coexist with many species of fish, even with fish of medium and increased aggression: scalar, goura and even with small cichlids.

Read more about DANIO here ...

8th place Torakatum

One of the famous large catfish of the aquarium world and excellent attendants of the aquarium. Peaceable and unpretentious to the content. They can be kept in a common aquarium with thickets of plants and a large number of shelters. Fish, do not pose any threat to other inhabitants of the aquarium. Compatible with all kinds of fish. The neighbors are not recommended only one hundred percent aggressors and predators.

You can read more about TORAKATUM here ...

9th place Gourami

Gourami - are medium sized fish. Entered in this TOP due to gill labyrinth - fish do not need aerationthey breathe atmospheric air. Really peaceful fish, but sometimes aggression. Some individuals taken separately are even very aggressive, as they say, as lucky. You can read more about GURAMI here ...

10 place Barbus

Barbusses are schooling, small fish that can stand up for themselves! If you decide to start barbs, I recommend to allocate for this a separate aquarium, "barbusyatnik." "Pirate" temper, the ability to stand up for themselves - deserve 10th place. You can read more about BARBUSH here ...

Of course, the above TOP is conditional - always remember the words

The most unusual aquarium fish

For a long time, the man was attracted by the fascinating underwater world, and he learned how to create his mini-model in his home. We are talking, of course, about the domestic pond - an aquarium, in which quite unusual inhabitants often live. Aquarium pets can be distinguished among other representatives of their own kind, not only by the shape of the fins and body or the coloring of scales, but also by non-standard behavior, as well as the functions they perform in the reservoir. On the unusual aquarium fish, adding exotic charm, originality and beauty to the reservoir, we will describe further.

The most expensive pets for the aquarium

Arovana

The most expensive aquarium fish, according to many experts, is considered the elite representative of the underwater world of Arowana (Arowana) - it’s a dragon fish that can reach a length of 80 cm.

The cost of each individual individual depends on its size and expressiveness of color. The average price of this pet is $ 5000, but there are rare specimens for which aquarists spread up to $ 400,000.

The most expensive type of fish is Platinum Arowana, a white dragon with a platinum shade.

The popularity of Arovan is not least due to the antiquity of its origin - representatives of this species have lived on Earth for more than 200 million years.

Today, the efforts of breeders brought many varieties of this rare fish. Dragons vary in fin shape, scale, size.

Elite species include Arowana of rare shades: platinum, red, gold, purple.

Perhaps because of its exclusivity and the high cost of living in China, it is a symbol of wealth.

Pearl stingray

Potamotrygon Sp. Pearl Ray - another expensive freshwater representative of the aquarium world, a native of Brazil.

It is quite rare in the natural environment, and in conditions of captivity it breeds reluctantly. That is, in fact, this species is very rare, which determines the willingness of aquarists to lay out a few thousand dollars for a pearl ray.

And the cost of fish of a particularly expressive color reaches tens of thousands of dollars for those who like aquarium exotics.

The pearly pet is really beautiful - the golden spots of rounded shape against the dark background of the body of the fish favorably distinguish it from other inhabitants of the reservoir.

Japanese carp koi

It also belongs to the aquarium elite, although not as expensive as the aforementioned species.

This representative of the underwater world has many varieties, the cost of which varies from $ 100 to $ 1500. For the most valuable specimens of Japanese carp lovers are willing to pay up to $ 5000.

In comfortable conditions, koi can reach a length of 50 cm and live for 100 years. But to provide him with such conditions is not easy, as the Japanese carp is very capricious.

In addition, through the efforts of the same breeders in breeding this species of fish, its immunity was sacrificed for its visual appeal. Therefore, the health of koi is very poor, and additional care is needed for this pet in the home water.

However, this does not stop lovers of interior exotic, they install huge tanks and often occupy them with bright Japanese koi.

Top aquarium beauties

Mandarin

Otherwise, Synchiropus splendidus is a bright exotic fish of only 6 cm in size that amazes with its beauty and harmonious combination of its coloring.

The natural habitat of these charming babies is the western Pacific area - from the Japanese islands in the north to the Australian latitudes in the south.

A favorite place to stay Mandarin are coastal reefs and quiet cozy lagoon. They live in numerous colonies, but to meet them in their natural environment is a rare success.

Synchiropus splendidus sink to the bottom and spend all the time there in search of food: small crustaceans, hay-eaters, scuds.

The appearance of a tangerine is truly extraordinary: an elongated body with a rounded, slightly flattened head is covered with smooth, scratchy, motley colored skin. Fish and lips attract with their size, they are too big, but noticeably add to the appearance of the pet.

The name tangerines received its name due to the unusual color of the skin, which looks like the clothes of the imperial tangerines in China.

Discus

It is a true decoration of aquariums. In nature, there are only two species of this exotic fish:

  • Symphysodon discus;
  • Symphysodon aequifasciatus.

They are delivered to the aquarium market from the South American continent.

But today they are no longer limited to this - the breeders took the case some time ago. As a result of their activity, the emergence of new species of fish:

  • the Dragon;
  • pigeon blood;
  • red Schillingmann;
  • uniform red and others.

Each of these varieties is characterized by its unique color. The shape of the body of the discus resembles a colored disc (from sand to reddish) with various wavy multi-colored lines arranged in different directions.

A rather large fin on the back is also decorated with wavy lines, and the elegant elongated pectoral and anal shape completes the attractive image of the discus.

Cockerels

Speaking of underwater beauties, it is impossible not to mention the Betta fighting fish (in a different way, the Cockerel). The natural habitat of this aquarium pet is water bodies with stagnant water in Southeast Asia, Vietnamese and Thai slow-flowing rivers with lush flowering vegetation and marshy bottom.

Externally attractive males with beautiful plumage of fins of various shades have truly fighting qualities, for which they received one of their names. This is especially characteristic of males, which individual gambling amateurs are specially bred to participate in combat duels. This kind of matches is collected by many spectators, where there are winners and losers.

If we talk about the appearance of the Betta fish, the natural most common color of her body is dark brown with a lot of green spots. The veil variety of the cockerel of the most varied colors - green, blue, yellow, white-pink, red, less often black - appeared due to the efforts of breeders.

Mostly aquarists appreciate the specimens that have lush one-color fins. Such cockerels are very rare.

Under the conditions of captivity, the life of Bett’s fighting fish is no more than three years.

The aquarium world fascinates with its unusual beauty, prompting many people to engage in aquarism. The numberlessness and variability of species in the underwater world amazes the imagination, and it is sometimes very difficult, if possible, to choose the best from this variety.

What is the biggest fish in the world? And what is the smallest?

A-stra

The largest modern fish belong to the orders of the lamniform and wobongongoobraznyh sharks. The record whale shark was 15.2 m long, but there are reports of whale sharks 18 m long. Slightly smaller is a giant shark: a maximum of 13.6 m. The shark-eater (presumably) and the beluga reach 9.5 m in length. In fact, the largest known fish is the extinct shark Carharodon Megalodon.
The largest freshwater fish. In the first place is the above-mentioned beluga - sometimes specimens of more than 9 meters were caught. Kaluga from the same sturgeon family reaches 6 m in length. The common catfish reaches 5.4 m in length. More than 5 m - the length of some Amazonian som, for example, Brachyplastystoma. Arapaima, or red fish, from South America reaches 4.9 m and weighs 90 kg (average specimen is 25-30 kg).
The smallest fish are pandak and mistycht goby. Their average length is only 7 mm (not less than 5 and not more than 15 mm). They are found in rivers and lakes in the Philippines.
The smallest sea fish.
The Caspian goby Berg rarely reaches even 2 cm.
More about the little ones: British experts found the smallest fish in the world, only 7.9 millimeters long, in the swamps of the island of Sumatra. She was immediately declared the smallest vertebrate in the world. It soon became clear that in 1979, a group of Australian and American scientists discovered a coral fish of the same size, which in 2004 was declared the smallest in the world. But the biggest surprise for the sensation hunters turned out to be the message of Professor Ted Pitch (Ted Pietsch) from the University of Washington, who recalled the little-known form of deep-sea fish, discovered back in 1925. Females of this species have a length of up to 5 centimeters, but the males are only 6-7 millimeters and parasitize on females, clinging to them from the back. It is these Alfonso fish that are real world record holders: smaller vertebrates on Earth are unknown.
In general, opinions differ:

Largest fish
The world's largest fish is a whale shark (Rhincodon typus), feeding on plankton and common in the southern parts of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans. The largest specimen, according to exact measurements carried out by scientists, was 12.65 m long, 7 m in the girth of the thickest part of the body, and weighed 15-21 tons. This shark was caught near about. Baba, near Karachi, Pakistan, November 11, 1949
The smallest fish
Goby Of all sea fish, the shortest body is in the dwarf goby (Trimmatom nanus) living in the Indo-Pacific region. According to the results of measurements carried out in 1978-79, the average body length of males was 8.9 mm, and of females - 9 mm.

The smallest fish in nature?

Valera peace Yao

From fish:
the smallest individual (male) - has a deep-water angler, Photocorynus spiniceps.
The smallest species "entirely" is the species Paedocypris progenetica (it is also the smallest freshwater species). British ichthyologist Dr. Ralf Britz (Ralf Britz, Natural History Muse-um, London), Singaporean zoologist Maurice Kuttelat (Maurice Kottelat, National University of Singapore) and their co-authors announced a new record discovery: in the April 22, 2006 issue of the English magazine The Royal Society (Proceedings of the Royal Society) describes a new genus and species of fish for science, Paedocypris progenetica. This fish, belonging to the carp family (Cyprinidae), a completely prosaic family, lives in the acidic dark waters of the peat bogs of the island of Sumatra. The length of adult females of Paedocypris progenetica is 7.9 mm, the males are 10.3 mm. The second smallest species of this kind is Paedocypris micromegethes. It is also found in peat swamps (but the islands of Borneo), and its females are about 8.8 mm long.
Schindleria brevipinguis has the smallest mass.

Paedocypris progenetica. The smallest fish on earth
Fish in a container, a sample from the Raffles Museum, a photo of Maurice Kottelat:

Paedocypris progenetica is a distant relative of carp, say scientists, the article about the discovery of which is published this week by the British scientific journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.
A transparent fish lives in peat bogs with high acidity on the Indonesian island of Sumatra and in the Malaysian part of Borneo. These so-called "black swamps" represent a unique ecosystem: here trees grow on a marshy soft peat cover, the thickness of which can reach several meters. In appearance, the water in them resembles a very dark tea and the environment here is extremely acidic. PH is 3, as in sour apples. These swamps are endangered due to human activity.
The smallest specimen of the species, which scientists have found, was the adult female Paedocypris progenetica, found in Sumatra. From nose to tail, its dimensions were only 7.9 mm.
This is smaller than the size of the previous record holder, the dwarf goby Trimmatom nanus (sea fish), which at puberty reaches 8 mm in length.
Open in new windowThe discovery was made by Maurice Cottelaat and Tan Heok Huy from the National University of Singapore, as well as Briton Ralph Britz and German Kai-Eric Witte.
Scientists say that Paedocypris progenetica has an undeveloped skull, which almost does not protect the brain. In addition, in order to survive in their particular environment, they developed special modified fins.
“Finding such a tiny and unusual fish shows how little we know about the biodiversity of Southeast Asia,” says Cottelaat.
What strikes me personally is the acidity of the water in which it is able to dwell. Until now, redsmen were considered to be red neons capable of tolerating a pH of up to 4, if this fish really lives at pH = 3, then this is absolutely phenomenal! About this pH value has a natural wine vinegar (less, of course, but the water from these swamps must be specifically sour to taste).
Paedocypris progenetica. The smallest fish on earth
Adults Paedocypris progenetica (enlarged): (a, b) male, about 9 mm; (c) female, about 8.8mm.

The smallest and easiest freshwater fish was considered to be a dwarf pandaka (Pandaka pygmaea). This colorless and almost transparent fish lives in the lakes of the island of Luzon in the Philippines. The name Pandaka pygmaea means in translation - pygmy pygmy. The body length of males is 7.5-9.9 mm, and the weight is only 4-5 mg. Together with this fish, the smallest species of gobi living in Filipin’s lakes - Mistichthys luzonensis, Pandaka pusilla, Microgobius lacustris, reaching a length of 10-12 mm are also the smallest. Despite their size, all these fish are widely used in fried form, mixed with spices, etc. Fish are often found in an aquarium. Pandaka pygmaea is listed as an endangered species.
Of all marine fish, the shortest body is that of the dwarf goby (Trimmatom nanus) living in the coral reefs of the western Pacific. Indo-Pacific region. According to the results of measurements carried out in 1978-79. , the average body length of males was 8.9 mm, and females - 9 mm. Some types of gobies have absolutely no stomach: right after the esophagus, the intestines begin.

Fatamorgana

And the smallest fish recognized the Filipino panda bull. He literally you one tooth: seven millimeters. At one time women of fashion wore these fish in their ears. In crystal aquarium earrings!
