Compatibility of aquarium fish with other fish

The compatibility of aquarium fish is a burning issue that many aquarists have. And it does not matter who you are - a novice aquarist or already experienced, when deciding whether to populate an aquarium, you automatically have passing experiences about the compatibility and compatibility of the fish with each other.

The compatibility of aquarium fish is a vast subject, controversial, purely individual for everyone. Therefore, there are many discussions around it, disputes and disagreements. Well, let us try to systematize this question in this article and how to fully disclose it!

First, let's look at the basic rules for selecting aquarium fish.

- When choosing aquarium fish in the first place take into account their compatibility.

- eat fish not compatible together;

- eat fish relatively compatible;

- eat completely compatible;

- Choosing a specific type of aquarium fish in a pet store, evaluate their health status (fish should not be lethargic, pale, etc.)

Assess the degree of aggressiveness of a specific fish (even if this type of fish is peaceful, sometimes overly aggressive types are encountered, for example, this behavior is often found in gays of blue).

- When buying fish, consider their features and intraspecific aggression.

For example, for "harem" fish, one mate needs to take a pair of females and vice versa for such fish as danios or barbs you need to take a flock, in which males will prevail.

Fish swim in different layers of water: someone in the lower layer, someone on average, and someone at the top.

So that your aquarium does not look empty, select fish living in different layers of water.

Often this rule also works with relative compatibility of fish and even sometimes with non-compatibility. For example, zebrafish can get on with small and medium-sized cichlids, just because they are nimble and swim in the upper layers of the aquarium without interfering with the cichlids.

- When choosing and buying fish, be sure to consider the comfortable parameters of water for their maintenance. It is impossible to combine the fish with different requirements - one will be hot and the other cold, one needs soft water, and the other, on the contrary, harder.
- As a general rule, it is recommended to keep large fish with large, slow-moving with slow-moving, nimble and nimble.

- If there are "herbivorous" fish in your tank, consider this when buying plants. In this case, it is better to acquire artificial plants or hard-leaved plants, and the fish themselves to buy inexpensive plant species or breed duckweed.

- There is another rule! If the fish are relatively compatible, and you really really want "both this and that." Consider that it is best to buy and plant such fish in the aquarium at the same time with young (fry). In this case, the fish, though not very friendly to each other, but as they say they can "get used to."

I do not think that the above rules sparkle with innovation, but as a starting point in the discussion of compatibility of fish there are places to be.

Now let's get straight to the issue of compatibility. As already mentioned, the fish can be divided into:

1. Compatible with each other;

2. Not compatible;

3. And relatively compatible.

With the first two points, everything is clear - the Goldfish family or neons will not last long with cichlids, or, for example, astronotuses perceive guppies and other small fish as live food. Conversely, guppies are friends with mollies and patzilia.

Full compatibility or incompatibility of fish due to the following features:

- family, squad, suborder of fish;

- the size of the fish;

- parameters of aquarium water and the conditions of the fish;

That is, if you combine in the aquarium fish from one family or about the same size, or with identical conditions of detention - then this will guarantee success! FOR THE EXCLUSION OF ONE, BUT !!!! Each rule has its exceptions.

I will give an example. Guppies and swordtails belong to the family of petsilians - viviparous fish, they are about the same size (almost, that is, those and those are not large fish. Swordbirds, of course, will be more than guppies) and the conditions of their contents are virtually identical. It would seem that the fish are absolutely compatible with each other. However, it is not. Despite the absolute similarity of the fish on the above criteria, skirmishes and fights can occur between them, swordtails can drive and bite the guppy's tail fins. Moreover, in this and the other species, intraspecific aggression is observed, which also adversely affects their joint content in the general aquarium.

At the same time, the Sword-bearers, the live-bearers and the scalar, are South American cichlids, who live peacefully together. Moreover, they look very beautiful together, especially if the swordtails are red, and the scalars are black, voile ones. Fish of different families, of different sizes, however, are absolutely compatible with each other.

In the photo is an aquarium, clearly confirming the compatibility of the Sword and Angelfish

Based on the foregoing, you can not take for granted and pick up the fish, dividing them only by: size, type and conditions of detention. It is fundamentally wrong to group fish in a similar way and to say that fish from a certain group are absolutely compatible with each other. In other words, 100% guarantee of compatibility of purchased fish, nobody will give you, there are always nuances and features that you better know yourself and in advance.

In my opinion, a more interesting question is related to the relative compatibility of fish. Since it fully reveals the lit question and gives rise to reflection and discussion.

Often, such compatibility is possible in pp 4, 6 and 8 of the Rules indicated above, adhering to which one can sometimes achieve the striking "combination of incompatible".

To give a clear concept of relative compatibility, I will give an example from personal experience. Not so long ago, an article on Ternition was updated on our website, where it was stated that they are compatible with Bagging Som. When the article was ready and released on the “air”, I turned to the expert of our website for fish breeding - Vitaly Chernyavsky with a request to review the article. So, as a comment to the article, Vitaly expressed his opinion that the Ternetsia and Bagniferous soma are not compatible, since the latter are terrible aggressors and predators. To which I objected in surprise - as so, because in my aquarium the thorns have been swimming for a long time with two bag-tailed catfish and everything is fine between them. Our discussion is at a standstill, because the arguments that the expert cited did not correspond to the real situation in my aquarium.

The time has passed, and somehow, on the Internet, I was caught by the book of I.I. Sheremetyeva "Aquarium fish", 1989, where the author describes the natural habitat and behavior of fish in natural conditions. When I began to read a section of the book on the bag-wading catfish, my hair became on end. It turns out that these somas are not just predators, but "fierce killers." In their homeland, in Asia, they exterminate all the fish that are in their reservoir, and when no one is left, they crawl out onto dry land and crawl to the nearest new reservoir behind the “new victim”, while eating on land "insects and small frogs.

It turns out that Vitaly Chernyavsky was right, bag-haired catfish are really fierce beasts.

The most important paradox is that, along with thorns in my aquarium, along with catfish "killers", for six months I calmly swim the most innocuous live-bearers, radishes. Who does not believe, here is a photo.

THERE'S SO, THAT IS THE SAME VILLAGE OF FISH AND IS CALLED RELATIVE COMPATIBILITY
How to achieve this? Well, firstly, do not go too far, secondly, clearly adhere to the previously stated rules, well, and third, perhaps the most important - you need to have experience, read and treat your pets and the aquarium as a whole in good faith. To reveal the individual compatibility of a specific aquarium fish is very difficult. To do this, you need to write a separate article for each type and at the same time take into account specific conditions of detention. Therefore, if you have any questions, I OFFER TO DISCUSS THEM IN THE COMMENTS TO THE ARTICLE.

Summing up the article to a logical conclusion, I would like to finally draw the reader’s attention to the mistakes that aquarists make when combining fish.

The first and perhaps the most blatant violation of the compatibility of fish - this is the overgrowth of the aquarium !!! Every aquarium pet should live in a comfortable environment, and not in a "communal". Overpopulation of aquarium is a direct path to fights, injuries and death of any fish, even peaceful ones.

Second violation - This is not compliance with the conditions of detention and zoning of the aquarium. Containing fish, you need to take into account their specifics, their characteristics and character.

For example, you can not contain wyunov akvantoftalmusov in an aquarium with coarse-grained soil. Aquantophthalmos are bottom-dwelling and love to dig in the ground, therefore sand or small pebbles are suitable as a substrate. On a large soil, they will "beat like asphalt", may be injured and die.

Zoning is to divide the aquarium into zones of influence. For example, in order to prevent scalar fights among themselves, it is recommended for each individual to zone an aquarium with plants - vallisneria.

And the third violation !!! Always remember that "We are responsible for those who have tamed." Improper maintenance of fish leads to dismal consequences. In bad conditions, the fish begin to fight for survival, fight and die.

Below is a table of compatibility of aquarium fish. She is often criticized by aquarists, however, as a guide she can serve well

Below are all other aquarium fish compatibility charts.

So the joyful moment in the life of every aquarist has come - buying fish in an aquarium. The range of fish is very large and diverse. In this article I will try to focus on the basic rules of compatibility of aquarium fish. What would I pay attention to when buying fish?

Do not rely on the advice of sellers selling in specialized stores. Like any trade worker, it is important for them to sell as many goods as possible at the highest prices. Before purchasing a fish, you must first make a choice, write down the names of the fish you like, read basic information about your favorites on the content parameters and the behavior of the fish in the aquarium.

Compatibility of fish in terms of content

There are cold-water and warm-water fish, fish that love soft water, and vice versa, hard-water fish. Fish that need thickets of living plants, and fish that tear, dig and eat all the plants in the aquarium. Many aquarists may argue that they say cold-water blue neons (temperature of 18-22 degrees) live well with the discus, which needs a temperature of 28-30 degrees.

I agree, they live, but with such a high temperature of water in the aquarium, all the life processes of neons are accelerated, their lifespan is reduced, which is already small - only 2-3 years with good conditions, as a result, neons quickly age and die.

COMPATIBILITY OF GOLDEN FISHES

Compatible guppies, what other fish get along with them?

Further, softwater fish, such as the American cichlids, will not feel comfortable in hard water. They will live, but be fruitful ... This is in doubt. I will make a reservation that there are exceptions to the rule: professional avkaryumisty easily breed an angelfish in those cities and regions where very hard water flows from the tap, with a hardness index of 30-35. But such a dilution requires experience and material costs associated with constant water softening (special preparations, for example: Tetra ToruMin, reverse osmosis installation, etc.)

Fish feel very well when an aquarist creates conditions for them that are close to natural. So it was with me when I changed the soil in the form of granite chips, which increased the rigidity of the aquarium water, to neutral soil in an aquarium with discus. The coloring of these wonderful fish, which are rightly called the Kings of the aquarium, has become brighter, the fish have become more mobile and the most important indicator is the formation of pairs and regular spawning.

Therefore, if you have very hard water flowing from the tap, consider buying hard-water fish, such as African cichlids, platillas, guppies, mollies, swordtails, etc.

Compatibility of fish with live plants. If you want an aquarium with a large number of living plants, then I do not recommend buying goldfish, African cichlids, labo, metinnis, tetragonopterus, African eels, tilapias, etc. Some fish perceive plants as food, others like to dig and dig up the soil, thus digging up the plants, damaging the tender roots.

This also applies to catfish, most of whom like to dig in the ground. Ancystrus, in the absence of herbal supplements in the diet, can damage the tender leaves of aquarium plants, filling them with a lack of plant foods.

Compatibility of fish size

The basic rule is this: it is recommended to keep large fish with large ones, and small ones with small ones. Any, even the most peaceful fish, will not miss the opportunity to eat another fish that fits in her mouth.

There is an opinion that if a large fish is planted in the aquarium with fry, then, growing, it will not offend its smaller neighbors. Alas, for me personally, such experiments have not justified themselves. When a larger individual grew, small fish went to her food.

South American cichlids

Compatibility of fish on the nature of food

This is rarely paid attention, but it would not hurt to take this indicator into account. There are herbivorous and predatory fish. Features of their power come from the name.

Any herbivorous fish will not give up animal feed, for example, bloodworms.

The peculiarity of herbivorous fish is that they have a small ventricle, the intestines are long, adapted for digesting plant foods.

If such fish are often fed with bloodworms, then over time problems with digestion and liver will begin.

This indicator is especially important to consider when compatibility of cichlids: the majority of African cichlids are animal-eaters, and their combined content with Tanganyki cichlids, trophaus, whose diet is algal fouling and other plant foods is not recommended.

Predatory fish, for example, the African black knife, it is better not to keep in one aquarium with small and peaceful fish. This nocturnal predator will hunt any fish that it can swallow.

From the aquarium with discus, I had to deposit one ancistrus. He, the only one of the three antsistrus living in this aquarium, stuck to the large body of the discus and injured him with a suction mouth. Such damage can be very dangerous for fish. What was missing in his diet? Fish scales? riddle. I think this is a feature of his character.

Compatibility of fish on the nature of behavior

This is a big and important topic. A number of fish are very aggressive, especially, aggression is manifested in the period of mating games, spawning and care for offspring. These fish include almost all tsikhlovye. Most cichlids are large, aggressive (very aggressive during spawning) and predatory fish. They in no case can not be combined with peaceful, small fish.

Cychlasmas: species, content, compatibility, reproduction

Among the fish there are, for example, barbs, who will not miss the opportunity to tweak another fish at the fins. Therefore, they are not recommended to contain with veil fish that have beautiful and long fins.

Therefore, in the aquarium you need to keep fish of similar nature.

For example, frisky and playful fish danios, it is not appropriate to look next to the majestic discussions and scalars. With their sharp movements, they can scare the discus. Once, I became a witness of how, during a sudden movement around the aquarium, the discus darted in different directions, and one of them, quite noticeably, crashed into the glass of the aquarium, and the other, threw up, hitting the aquarium cover. By the way, this feature of discus, you need to consider when choosing the location of the aquarium. I want to note that my aquarium with discussions is installed in a very busy place of the apartment. After some time, the fish are accustomed to and do not react to sudden movements.

Selecting fish in an aquarium according to the nature of their behavior, do not forget to take into account such features that many fish like to hide in shelters. It is necessary to ensure the presence of shelters in the aquarium in the form of grottoes and caves. Snags in an aquarium, for example, are important for catfish. In addition to shelters, snags are part of the diet. Для некоторых рыбок, которые любят зарываться в грунт, важна фракция этого грунта и его обработка. Для таких рыбок предпочтительнее песок с округлыми краями.

There are a number of other parameters - the demands on lighting, the rate of flow of water in an aquarium: there are fish who love standing bodies of water, and fish that inhabit rivers with a fast current of water, the degree of salinity of water, etc.

I want to note that you can not stick with the choice of fish, only one of the compatibility parameters. You need to take them into account or try to take into account the complex. Do not forget when choosing fish to take into account the volume of your aquarium and the size of the fish in adult condition. It is important.

To facilitate the adaptation of fish, to new conditions, you can use the preparation, minimizing the stress of fish from transportation and relocation: Tetra AquaSafe, Tetra Vital, Tetra EasyBalance, Tetra Nitrate Minus.

In any case, the choice is always yours, this is your experience.

Most importantly, if you try to take into account the peculiarities of the content and behavior of the fish you choose, to create comfortable conditions for their existence, they will delight you for many years with their beauty and health, and many of them will delight you with numerous offspring!

Compatibility of aquarium fish: tips and tricks

Selection of fish for your aquarium is a very interesting task, but not easy. The choice is truly huge, and we have to take into account not only the features of the appearance of the fish, but also many other factors. One of them is their compatibility, that is, the ability of different species to live together and feel comfortable in the general aquarium. The main principles of this compatibility will be discussed in this article.

The reasons for the impossibility of sharing some species of fish - and any other living creatures - are intuitively understandable: they live in nature in different climatic zones, in different conditions, and even in the case of close proximity they can be in different relationships with each other, for example, being a predator and the victim. And if we are philosophical about the fact that in the natural environment of the environment some fish eat others, few people want to witness such a picture in their aquarium. In order to avoid a situation in which fish in an aquarium suffer from their neighborhood, in selecting them you need to know and take into account several basic rules.

Compatibility Types

Fish species can be:

  • fully compatible;
  • completely incompatible;
  • conditionally (limited) compatible.

Click to enlarge

The first two categories are clear, the third includes species whose coexistence is possible under certain conditions (such as the size of an aquarium, its proper zoning, the presence of shelters, or even particular features of character and life experience of specific fish individuals). I must say that sometimes - very rarely! - in aquariums, somehow, completely incompatible species manage to get along, but these are exceptions.

To facilitate the selection of fish there are species compatibility tables, they are in the special literature and on many aquarium sites. But let us try to formulate the principles by which the compatibility of the fish is determined.

Basic principles of aquarium fish species compatibility

Similar conditions of detention

It is obvious that in one aquarium it is impossible to settle fish that require different environmental parameters: water temperature, hardness, acidity, light, the presence and strength of the flow, and so on. Often similar requirements to the conditions of detention are related species of fish or species that live in nature in the same biotopes.

Specific aquariums are built according to this principle of selection of fish: the now popular tsikhlidniki, aquariums with various short-headed goldfish or with viviparous - guppies, petillia, and mollies. Interesting and geographical aquariums (for example, the aquarium "South-East Asia"), recreating the conditions of a locality, where people live fish of different families living in this area.

Predators and prey

Here, too, everything is simple and clear: you can not keep together predatory fish and their potential prey. That is, predators, of course, will be grateful to you for this - it is always more pleasant to catch and eat a young neonchik than to choke on dry food (and it is more useful for health). But here the future victims of this alignment are unlikely to be happy. Therefore, before buying fish, you should definitely find out whether they are predators (yes, cute little fish from the pet store can easily grow into ruthless killers), and choose the right size for their neighbors.

Size matters

Large fish, even if they are not predators, are not recommended to live with fish trifles, as representatives of the latter will always feel threatened and in stressful conditions. This will adversely affect their health, longevity, and decorative value: firstly, the color can fade from feelings, secondly, fish will hide all the time, it will be uninteresting to watch them, and it is almost impossible. In addition, it is likely that a completely peaceful, non-predatory large fish will inadvertently swallow a small one, because even such lodges as goldfish will catch prey if it swims into their mouths. Conclusion: the fish in the aquarium should be of a comparable size and at least should not fit together in the mouth.

Opposites do not converge

Unlike people, whose temperaments often complement each other, fish feel more comfortable among individuals with similar behavior. Rather, nimble, lively and active fish (such as, for example, zebrafish) usually pay little attention to phlegmatic and brooding gourami or guppy, but the latter, surrounded by fast and nimble neighbors, may experience stress and discomfort. In addition, they often simply do not get food, as energetic neighbors eat it faster than fish-mattresses have time to get to this food.

Of course, not everyone wants to have a continuous melteshenie or, conversely, a sleepy kingdom in an aquarium. Therefore, you can pick up fish with different temperament, but with the condition that they will occupy different layers of water, for example, calm bottom catfish and fast schooling fish in the middle layers of the aquarium.

Territorial aggressors

There are fish species that attack other inhabitants of the aquarium, not because they see food objects in them, but to protect their territory. Territorial fish protect their family spawning areas, such as cichlids, and in the case of algae-eating fish (Labo, Girinoheylus) - their pastures. In different types of aggression can be directed either only to individuals of their own species, or to the entire population of the aquarium. Therefore, acquiring a fish, you should definitely find out whether it is territorial and how this property manifests itself in it. In the descriptions of the species, it is indicated how best to settle them: singly, in groups, in pairs, whether other species can live in an aquarium with them, and what kinds of species these should be.

Gentle beauties

Fish that, as a result of breeding, acquired unusual for their species hypertrophied features (veil fins, growths on the skin, greatly enlarged eyes, albino coloring) are usually much more tender than their wild type congeners, and they should be treated with special care. . It is recommended to place goldfish in telescopes, astrochets, voiletails, pearls in species aquariums, where even long-bodied rocks of scoria should not be, not to mention different bullies, such as barbs. The same applies to other fish with long fins. You can not settle them with those who are ready to bite these fins.

Albinos of some species, for example, Labo, do not withstand competition with their relatives of the usual color and lose battles for the territory, which gradually leads to their death.

What to do if you really want to populate low-compatible species in an aquarium?

Species that are biologically poorly compatible (that is, those that need very different water parameters) cannot be lodged together. With behavioral compatibility (when the fish do not match in temperament or some of them are territorial), you can experiment. General tips are:

  1. The aquarium should be spacious and not overcrowded, it should be zoned with the help of decorations and tall long-stemmed or long-leaved plants (so that there is no other view from one part of the aquarium) and provide a variety of shelters. For fish that prefer the upper layers of water, it can be dense thickets of plants and tall, intertwined snags, for bottom fish - grottoes, shards, coconut shells.
  2. Make sure everyone has enough food. Food should be given so that it falls into different parts of the aquarium, and the fish did not need to fight for it, and the timid did not even need to swim far out of their corner. Seaweed fed with lettuce, cucumber, zucchini, which are also located in different parts of the aquarium.
  3. Buy fish of different species young and grow them together, so that they have the opportunity to get used to each other.

It must be remembered that settling into an aquarium of incompatible species is a big risk, and to be ready to change the design of the aquarium, equipping new zones and shelters, treat battered or diseased fish and periodically buy new ones to replace the dead. But aquarism is interesting in that it gives us a wide range of possibilities: we decide for ourselves whether we want to see a peaceful idyll in the aquarium or a boil of African passions. The main thing is that this decision be deliberate.

A short video story about the compatibility of aquarium fish:

Type of aquarium fish and compatibility of different species (table)

Getting a pet store, the newcomer is just lost - so many fish, they all like it in their own way, I want to settle in the new aquarium as many handsome men as possible. But the choice of neighbors has its own subtleties. Let's consider how aquarium fish are compatible with each other.

Species compatibility

The species compatibility table clearly shows which animals are fully compatible with each other, incompatible, or partially compatible under certain conditions. Consider the principles on which the table is built.

  1. Conditions should be well suited for all inhabitants of the aquarium.
  2. You can not put together a predator and prey.
  3. Type of aquarium fish with a calm and sluggish nature should not coexist with fast and active fish. They'll starve and get stressed.
  4. The inhabitants of the aquarium should be proportionate. Even the most peaceful fish will eat everyone who fits into her mouth.
  5. Some fish show aggression and can attack both neighbors and members of their own species. It is necessary to take into account the particular behavior.
  6. One type of aquarium fish can not live without a flock of their own kind, the other - without a pair, and the third prefers loneliness. This should not be forgotten if you want to avoid fights or stress.

So, consider what types of aquarium fish are, some aspects of their content and compatibility. In one article it is impossible to describe all types of fish, so we will focus on the most popular representatives and the general characteristics of groups.

Cichlids

Apistogram dwarf cichlids are popular species of aquarium fish. Photos show that these little fish look like bright tropical butterflies. Apistograms do not need a large amount of aquarium, plants do not damage and are quite calm. They can be kept with other peaceful fish - sword-bearers, patzilia, guppies, mollies, neons, rassets, tetras, small catfish, barbs. But small shrimp will be happy to eat even dwarf cichlids. Males apistogramm in a small aquarium will be aggressive to each other, so you can keep a couple or a harem.

Another popular type of aquarium fish is the scalar. These fish are also thermophilic, do not destroy plants. But they will eat up all the small neighbors (neon, rasbor), and the aggressive fish will cut off their beautiful long fins (crests, denison, many types of barbs). For these reasons, the list of neighbors is small - unhurried gourami, mollies, petilles, cherry barbs, some soma.

The kings of the freshwater aquarium - the discus - are very demanding to the conditions and nutrition of the fish. In addition, the preferred high temperature - 28-31 ° C. Far from all plants and animals can withstand such heat. They are compatible with discus: catfish tarakatum, clown combat, Ramirezi's apistogram, red-bearing tetra, red neons. Discus gentle fish, prone to stress and various diseases, so it is better to abandon any neighbors.

As for other types of cichlids, such as the parrot, handsome chromis, labidochromis ellou, black-striped cichlid, astronotus and others, it is difficult to pick up the neighbors. These fish are territorial, aggressive, they need shelter. They dig the ground, pull out all the plants. Two males in a small volume will constantly conflict, so you can keep them in pairs or harems, with other active fish, able to stand up for themselves. They are compatible only with other cichlids, and because of intraspecific aggression, it is better to choose neighbors with a different color.

Viviparous

That viviparous most often become the first pets beginners. Sword-bearers, mollies, platies, aquarium guppy fish. All types of viviparous are unpretentious in content, not aggressive, easily get along with other types of peaceful fish. In addition, a huge number of varieties and colors viviparous. More than 80 species of guppies, dozens of species of placiums, mollies, swordtails differ not only in coloring, but also in the shape of the body and fins.

Of course, in the content of viviparous there are some subtleties. Males of swordtails can be aggressive, therefore they do not recommend settling several males in one aquarium. And guppies can provoke barbs, thorns, angelfish, some gourams with their bright long tails.

Guppies - the smallest of viviparous, but larger molly, placium and swordfish can be settled with scalars, gourami, barbs. Neon, rasbora, cardinals, tarakatum, speckled catfish, corridors will be good neighbors for all.

Labyrinth

Suitable for beginners and labyrinth aquarium fish. Species of these fish are remarkable in that they need atmospheric air for breathing. Some labyrinths are pretty jumping, so the aquarium should be covered with a lid, but with an obligatory gap. In the aquarium should be a lot of plants and shelters.

Males of males and macropods are very aggressive towards other males of their own species, therefore they need to be maintained by a harem. Conflicts between males will be with gourami, lyalius. They need a spacious aquarium and several females. All types of labyrinth females also need shelter in order to hide from harassment during spawning.

Despite the intraspecific aggression, the labyrinths get along well with other peaceful fish - swordtails, petillia, mollies, neons, rassets, zebrafish, cherry barbs, antsistrus, cardinals, speckled catfish. You can not settle with fish that love to tear off fins - barbs and ternitsemi.

Haracin

It is not easy even to list all the types and names of aquarium fish of the Haracin family. They are quite different from each other - this is the well-known neon, tetra, and Khujet's rare pikes, predatory piranhas, flying blazer-belly, and huge black pacu.

Tetras, phantoms, congos, ternas are very active, peaceful fish of medium and small size. They live in flocks, so do not purchase less than 7-10 individuals. Black neighbors, tarakatums, lyalius, speckled catfish, danios, cardinals, viviparous can be neighbors for them. Some tetras like to tear off other fins to other fish, so they need to be carefully kept with their tail fin.

Black, red and blue neons are peaceful little fishes. They need to settle with a flock of 15 individuals. Because of their small size, large fish are dangerous for neons, it is better to give preference to smaller and non-predatory neighbors - rasboram, small haratsinovym, apistogramma, clipped belly, viviparous, cardinals, iris, barbs.

Botsi

Botsiya-clown, tiger and marble combat - large and very active fish. They prefer to live in a flock of 5 individuals. Get along well with other peaceful fish of medium and large sizes. They can tear off the veil fins. They eat plants and snails.

Botsi stay mostly at the bottom, occasionally rising in the middle layers of water. Therefore, it is better to supplement their company with fish that live in the upper layers. Good neighbors for fighting can be barbs, angelfish, danios, gourami, viviparous, rasbor, iris, labo, tetra.

Barbusses

Cherry barb is the most peaceful type of aquarium fish among its relatives. It will easily get along with small fish, but large and predatory neighbors can easily offend him. They contain a barb by a flock of 5 individuals, in the company of neons, rasbor, cardinals, danios, corridors.

As for the other types of barbs - Sumatran, fire, mutants, they are known as hooligans and bullies. Active fish that will not be offended will approach them as neighbors - danio rerio, ternets, congas, tetras, tarakatums, speckled catfish, cardinals. Fish that have long fins that will annoy barbecues - goslings, hyalus, will not work.

Danio

Danio - active small aquarium fish. Compatibility of species - the table shows that due to its size and peaceful nature, danios get along well with many fish. To keep them you need flocks of at least 5 individuals.

The list of good neighbors for danios is really extensive - viviparous, cockerels, angelfish, gourami, fighters, iris, rasbor, labo, tetra. All peaceful fish of small and medium size, which will not offend danios, are suitable.

Labeo

Labo bicolor is often recommended as a calm fish for a common aquarium. But it is not.The young labo will be shy and shy, but an adult will begin to protect its territory and attack fish that resemble their relatives. Several laboos will invariably conflict. Fast fish that live in the upper layers of water - danios, thorns, barbs, can live with him. Green Labo will also be able to temper his aggressiveness if he has his own territory and shelter, which he will defend.

It occurs in our zoomagin and black labo. This fish does not tolerate their relatives, aggressive and territorial. It grows up to 80 cm in length and needs a large volume aquarium. It can live with large fish, for example, with the red-tailed catfish. But conflicts are not excluded.

Goldfish

Another pets for beginners - goldfish. Aquarium species of these fish are very common. If you look at the compatibility table, the line devoted to goldfish will be completely filled with red, with a few yellow areas, just like many cichlids. But if cichlids are aggressive, then goldfish often become victims themselves. Goldfish are large, and little things like rasbor and neon, they gradually eat. And the other inhabitants of the aquarium themselves can offend the slow and delicate little crowns with long fins.

Golden fish is best to settle with their own kind, there are enough interesting varieties of this breed. It should not be forgotten that if you want to get offspring, then you cannot keep different species together. Who do goldfish can get along with? Aquarium species of calm catfish - the Tarakatum, fighting-clowns, corridors, peaceful tetras - Congas, terntions and calm danios will be fine. There are also examples of successful cohabitation of gold with neons, scalars, viviparous, but we must remember that any neighborhood of goldfish with other species may result in conflicts and death of the inhabitants of the aquarium.

Soma

The bottom is occupied by aquarium fish - catfish. Types of catfish are very diverse, they differ both in size and behavior. Consider the most common.

Shy platydoras will surely eat all the fish that fit into his mouth. Therefore, it can only be maintained with large fish, for example, cichlids.

Most often in an aquarium live ancistrus. Several antsistrusov can be kept only under the condition of a large aquarium, these fish are territorial. But to other species they are not aggressive, and very few people touch them either.

The corridors are another popular catfish species. They are kept in a group of at least 3 individuals, if they are eaten by space - 10-15. Fish are peaceful, but their large fish can eat. Ideal neighbors for corridors are tetras, rasbaras, danios, viviparins, dwarf cichlids. They do not like water with a temperature above 25 degrees, so it is not suitable for content with thermophilic species.

Tarakatum has a peace-loving nature and can coexist with peaceful fish and even with other catfish.

Red-tailed catfish can often be seen in pet stores, but this fish is not suitable for a common aquarium, as it grows very large - up to a meter, and simply eat all the inhabitants. It can live with commensurate fish, but the aquarium for a group of such large fish must be very large - from 1000 liters.

Glass catfish is well suited for a general aquarium, it can live with commensurate and small fish - neon, ramming, small gurus, Ramirezi apistogram, catfish. Large fish are dangerous for this peaceful catfish.

Pterigoplichts grow large, so neighbors must be matched - large cichlids, giant gourami, fish knives, polypteruses.

What are the best neon fish fishes?

Neons are small freshwater fish of the Kharatsin family. In the wild, they are very active and brisk, able to quickly hide from predators, maneuvering among thick plants. Body size reaches 3 cm in length, life expectancy depends on water temperature: from 1.5 years to 3 years. Behavioral characteristics: due to a peaceful disposition, they can live together with each other in a flock, as well as with other species of fish. Guppies and neons, petsyli and neons, catfish and neons get along well in the same aquarium. Such compatibility is beneficial for novice aquarists, since these types of fish will definitely not harm each other.

What else should be considered in compatibility? Males of neons are brighter in color than females, the contrast of scales depends on the species. But one thing unites them - a horizontal strip passes through the body, which glitters with “neon” shimmering even in darkness. This feature can be attractive to predatory fish and those who do not welcome next to their more beautiful neighbors. So settle a flock of neons of 5-7 fish and more in a spacious tank with shelters so that in case of unforeseen attacks, they can hide in time.

Settlement rules in a common aquarium

Neons are characterized by calm behavior, and only during the spawning season they become overly active and cocky. Therefore, choose as your neighbors for them fish are not predatory, but omnivorous or herbivorous, balanced and not very playful. There are a number of rules that are important to ensure that the compatibility of neons with other fish in the aquarium is the most successful.

Look at the successful version of the general aquarium with neons.

  1. Compatibility is possible between fish that live in the wild in a similar environment. Neon fish live in water at a temperature of 18-24 ° C, pH 5.5-7.5 pH, hardness 8-20o. Therefore, their neighbors in the aquarium should be adapted to the same parameters.
  2. Neon cannot be settled with large predators that feed exclusively on meat and carrion. Otherwise, peace-loving neons will become prey for them - the fins can be cut off, at a minimum.
  3. You can not settle in the general aquarium fish large and small, such an incompatibility can cause severe stress, or loss of bright body color.
  4. Choose neighbors, similar in temperament. Small and nimble fish will feel comfortable in the company of calm and not fast fish. What is it for? The fact is that the activity of fish can cause fluctuations in water, which can lead to stress.
  5. Neons are schooling fishes, not loners. They feel well in the company of the same kindred, the fish alone will not live long.

  6. A territorial niche should be installed in the aquarium. That is, all types of fish should swim in certain layers of water - in the lower, middle or upper. So they will not interfere with each other. Neons, like somiki corridor, swim in the bottom layer of the aquatic environment.
  7. Neons love plants not as a delicacy, but as scenery or shelter, among which you can swim or hide. If other aquarium fish gnaw leaves, or are prone to such sabotage, neons can suffer greatly.
  8. During all diseases, the fish must be treated, and the treatment methods may not be the same for all fish. Some tolerate treatment with salt, copper, and others - no. Neons are not particularly sensitive to copper-based drugs. Therefore, their neighbors can become fish with the same portability. Then the treatment can take place in the general aquarium.

With whom neons can and cannot get along

Neon get on well in the home pond with such aquarium fish: Pecillia (guppies, swordtails, mollies, placiums), speckled catfish, panda, tetra, danio rheo, labo, rastar, minors, gourami, iris, pulcheras, minors, hyacinths, sweaters, laboratories, rasomes, minors, gourami, iris, pulcheras, minors, marines, sweaters, minors, gourami, iris, pulcheras, minors, and fish. Consider compatibility with some fish in more detail.

See how well the scalar and neons get along in one aquarium.

Somiki corridor are excellent neighbors for small haracin ones, live together in the bottom layers of the aquarium, and collect remnants of uneaten food. The corridors are innocuous fish, also small and peaceful, they love to watch their neighbors without harming them.

Rasbory - can make an excellent company neon. Among them: the actual rasbory, boraras, microassemblies and trigonustigma, some of them belong to the family Karpovye.

Fishes of the Family Petsilievye (guppies, molly, sword-bearers, petsilia) - peacefully cohabit with haracin. Swordtails also have small body size, but males may be excessively active. It should be borne in mind that more than two swordtail males sometimes pursue smaller neighbors, especially during the spawning period. With insufficient feeding, in the cramped, small place for swimming, the swordtails become unbearable. So that these fish do not terrorize small neons, the aquarium should be spacious, with a sufficient number of plants and shelters.

Neons are poorly compatible with such fish:

  1. Large catfish, cichlids, barbs, astronotus, cockerels, koi carps - those who live in cool water, or have a predatory, aggressive behavior.
  2. Goldfish - they live in cool water, and are aggressive towards bright fish and their offspring.
  3. Angelfish - can live with neons only under the condition that they all grew up with the age of young animals. But neon-stranger scalar will be perceived as food. Also during the mating season, the scalar will be aggressively inclined towards everyone, including these small fish.

COMPATIBILITY OF GOLDEN FISHES

COMPATIBILITY OF GOLDEN FISHES
WITH OTHER FISH SPECIES

Compatibility issue Goldfish (Carassius) on the one hand, it is rather simple, but on the other it is complicated, and this is due to a number of specific nuances that are characteristic of this particular family of aquarium fish.

I think this topic should start with the fact that ALL BREEDS OF GOLDEN FISHES were obtained as a result of millennial selection. Therefore, the Voilehvost, Orandy, Telescopes, Shubunkins and others are artificially bred breeds, which, in fact, were obtained from one ancestor - silver carp.

Therefore, if we talk about the intraspecific compatibility of Goldfish, that is, the possibility of sharing, for example, telescopes and koi carps in an aquarium or a pond, then this coexistence takes place - all types of Goldfish are absolutely compatible with each other. But, HERE THERE ARE ONE BUT! Since all the Scrofula are from the same tribe, they are in the same reservoir, they will interbreed with each other, resulting in "bastards" or if you want mutants - outbred hybrids. Taking into account the experiments, such a joint residence leads to degeneration and the transformation of the fish back into a crucian.

Therefore, if you plan to get offspring and breed Goldfish, then their species content in the general body of water - PROHIBITED!

Before the discussion, the specific compatibility of Goldfish with other fish. It should be noted that Goldfish are large, slow, slow-moving fish. And this specifics should definitely be fat. For example, if you keep the Veiltails in a small aquarium with others, whether they are the most peaceful fish, all the same, over time, the fish will die, since the lack of free space - standards of maintenance, will do its job and the fish will simply “gnaw”.

In addition, when discussing the compatibility of any species of fish, it should be borne in mind that a single fish taken has its own character. In this connection, even observing all aquarium compatibility rules, you can get a negative result. In order to maximize this factor, it is always recommended to plant different fish with young and at the same time, rather than gradually add new ones to old ones.

Now let's look at the compatibility of Goldfish with specific species of other fish.

Goldfish and Cichlids: Astronotus, Angelfish, Discus, Akara, Apistograms, Parrots, Tsikhlazymy: diamond, black-striped, Severum and other cichlids.

Such a union, alas, is not possible. All the fish of the cichlid family are aggressive and will not give life to the golden fish. Astronotus generally perceives Gold as a good live snack.

Therefore, to keep them together is strictly contraindicated, even with small cilida.

Somehow, I tried to combine veil eyelids with Goldfish, but alas, they had to be planted in the future. Despite the fact that the veil scalars are slow and somewhat similar to gold, all the same, after a couple of days, races began throughout the aquarium.

So, I recommend not experimenting - this is wasted time and money!

Goldfish and Tetras: neons, minors, ternistus, pulcher, lanterns, glass tetras, congo and other characteristic fish.

Here the situation is fundamentally opposite. All tetras are so peaceful fish that their union with Goldfish will be a wonderful variety of fish in your aquarium. One, but !!! When Goldfish grow up, they may burst into small tetras, therefore it is better to take “large” Kharacin fishes, for example, ternets or Congo, to Zolotuha.

Goldfish and Labyrinth: all gourami, lyalius, macrapods dr.

I do not even know what to say to you. On the one hand, they are compatible, but on the other hand they are not. This is due to the fact that the labyrinth, in particular gourami, very unpredictable fish and each individual gourami has its own character.

So that it is clear, I will give an example from my experience. Once upon a time, when I started my first aquarium of 35 liters and stuffed a bunch of fish there, including two marble gouramies, the latter were like mice, did not touch anyone and coexisted peacefully in the “little hostel”. But when one day I planted another blue gourae into a large aquarium, he made such a riot that it was bad even for small cichlid. I had to take her back to the pet store.

At the same time, lyalius - these are scared fish, I have no experience, but I think that it will be bad for them with Goldfish.

In view of the above, the coexistence of Gold with Labyrinths is a confusion, so this neighborhood is not recommended.

Goldfish and Aquarium Catfish, other bottom fish: corridors (speckled catfish), antsistrusy (catfish sucker), fighting, akantoftalmusy, green catfish brochis, tarakatumy and others.

In general, there is 100% compatibility. I draw your attention, only that not all somas are very peaceful. For example, Botsia Modest or Bai are somiers who can bite. Or, for example, ancistrus at night can easily stick to sleeping Goldfish, from which the latter will look like plucked hens.

Otherwise, everything is OK! Moreover, all aquarium catfish are good helpers in the fight with poop from Goldfish. Provide an aquarium bottom to the catfish and the frequency of the aquarium floor siphon will decrease.

Goldfish and carp: barbusses, danios and others.

It should always be remembered that Goldfish are slow and any neighborhood with nimble fish, and even more so those who can pluck them is not desirable. I do not see anything criminal in the joint content of danios and goldfish, but I do not recommend barbs. Sumatrans easily bite Golden.

Goldfish and pezillium, viviparous fishes: guppies, swordtails, mollies and others.

I read somewhere that guppies can attack and bite off Goldfish! But, something I can not believe in these stories. I can’t even imagine how this gopeshka will be able to covet on a big Golden Fish, unless they attack the crowd))).

I admit honestly, I don’t have any experience in keeping live beetles and Goldfish. And in general, it is somehow not solid to keep golden aksakals of the aquarium world and unpretentious live-bearers together.

And I also want to offer you such a topic as Compatibility of Goldfish and aquarium plants.

Who started up Goldfish knows that this issue is acute, as the Golden family well just loves plant food. To avoid the disgustingly plucked aquarium plants, I give my Golden twice-weekly grown duckweed from another aquarium. It is also possible to recommend to keep Goldfish with aquarium plants that will be too tough for Goldfish: Anubiases, microsoriums, cryptocorynes, as well as mosses.

For more on this, see this article - FISHING EATING PLANTS WHAT TO DO?

Summing up, it should be said that, nevertheless, Goldfish are fish intended for a specific aquarium that require special, special attention. Moreover, the cost of these fish is quite high, they are long-lived compared to other inhabitants of the aquarium and therefore it would be a shame to lose such a fish due to the fact that some five-kopek antsistrus did not let her sleep at night.

With whom to launch guppies in the general aquarium?

There is hardly a person, even very far from aquarists, who would not hear about guppies. These small bright fish are able to charm absolutely everyone who only once looks at their feathers, specks, flickering scales. Slender, airy, they flash in the water like butterflies! But handsome men are attractive not only for connoisseurs of beauty, but also for neighbors in the aquarium, who can look after them as a delicious dinner. To avoid unnecessary sacrifices, it is necessary to observe some rules for selecting pets, taking into account their compatibility.

On the compatibility of aquarium fish

Settling an aquarium is a demanding, painstaking task. It requires theoretical knowledge. Fish may have full or relative compatibility and be completely incompatible.

Most likely, representatives of the same family, detachment, suborder, having the same size and conditions of detention can get along. Common sense will not allow the inhabitants of cooler waters to settle in tropical conditions. Predatory large species can cause serious harm to miniature water inhabitants. But there are exceptions in any rule, which is confirmed by experienced aquarists. There are many cases where peace-loving fish friendly cohabited with fierce predators for a long time. At the same time, baseless wars often arose between calm fish.

If you are still not sure that water inhabitants are compatible, you can always use special tables.They contain information that will dispel your doubts and prevent you from making irreparable mistakes.

Look at the aquarium with guppies, lyalius, neon and catfish.

Guppy Description

What is necessary to know about the representatives of the species for the correct choice of neighbors for them? The species of guppy belongs to the genus of the family of the intestine of the petsilievy order carpsong. Fish is viviparous. The size of a male is from one and a half to four centimeters, females - from three to seven. Life expectancy is about two and a half years. The color is varied - monophonic, multi-colored, speckled, striped. There are several dozen selection forms. Many of them have fan-shaped streaming tails. Guppies live in groups ranging from a couple to the amount that can be placed in an aquarium. They live in the upper layers of water. They are very active, can jump out, so it is better to have a special cover.

Parameters favorable for keeping fish:

  • water volume from 30 l;
  • temperature + 24-26 ° C;
  • stiffness dH 10-25 °;
  • acidity: pH 7.

They, like all inhabitants of domestic ponds, need light, aeration, water purification by filtration and weekly substitution of its part.

Petsilium Neighborhood

As mentioned earlier, representatives of the same family can be kept in the same aquarium. They are fully compatible. It is safe to populate guppies with all their pecillium brethren without fear for their health. In addition, the conditions of existence of these fish are similar.

Petsilievyh, or gambusiyevy family include:

  • alfaro turquoise;
  • blue-eyed;
  • guppy;
  • limia;
  • swordtail
  • mollies;
  • petilia.

Bottom dwellers

Neighbors who will rarely cross each other will be harmless to each other. Somics spend most of their time at the bottom, are active at night. Aquarium fish guppies, on the contrary, love the light, so they occupy the upper and middle layers of water. Thus, the question of dividing the territory disappears. They may not even know that they live in the same reservoir. This ensures compatibility. In addition to small catfish, on this basis, you can choose to neighbors fighting, fish-knife.

Admire the beautiful and large common aquarium.

Predators

Predatory fish such as African scalar, goldfish, discus, astronotus, cichlids can not only damage the luxurious tails of defenseless babies, but also destroy their offspring. For safety reasons, adults should not be settled in a single aquarium. But while the scalars are at the stage of maturation, they may well be in the company of the guppy flocks.

Other neighbors

Long-term, even centuries-old experience of studying the nature, characteristics of life activity of fish in captivity gave modern avkvariumistam information that will help determine the compatibility of fish. Using the verified data, you can without a doubt organize the accommodation of gupeshek with the following types:

  • cockerels;
  • danios;
  • fighting;
  • iris;
  • rasbory;
  • tetras.

They have relative compatibility with barbs, gourami, eels, labo. Most likely, pets will make friends if they spend together the time of growing up.

The aquarium in which the fish coexist with other equally beautiful creatures looks quite unusual. An example is shrimp. They are unpretentious, peaceful, moreover they bring enormous benefits - they eat leftover food, helping to maintain cleanliness. There are many shrimp, differing in color: snowflake, glass, harlequin, cardinal, bee and others. They will complement the colorful world created by small fish.

Like any hobby, aquarism is a field for experimentation. Neither the author of the encyclopedia, nor an experienced amateur can unequivocally answer whether guppies get along with other fishes. Compatibility is a relative concept. After all, even a cute little fish can show its character and arrange a rebellion against the same peaceful peaceful neighbors. Thus, to keep an aquarium filled with one species, or to combine with others is a deeply individual question.

Unpretentious gourami - great neighbors

Gourami are small fish of the Macropod family, a suborder Labyrinth fish. Many species are endemics of Southeast Asia, prefer calm waters with a slow current. Gourami in these regions are of industrial importance, but in many aquariums in the world they are ornamental fish. They have a peaceful and calm character, small body size, to keep them simple even for a beginner aquarist. Gourami practically do not show aggression towards their neighbors in the "house", most often they are in conflict with each other. To settle them in a common nursery, you must understand the peculiarities of their character.

Character

These fish will not deliberately disturb their neighbors, chase and eat their fry, as they eat only small food. Females often hide in shelters or dense vegetation, sometimes they swim up to the upper layers of water in order to get air from the surface. In males, the character is unpredictable, sometimes flimsy and aggressive, but they are poorly protected from predatory species, if there are such in the aquarium. They are easy to grab for thin thread-like fins of the abdominal part.

It is important that they live well with other fish, their character unpretentious and peaceful. If you want to save them a prosperous life, take care of good-neighborly settlement.

Are compatible with each other?

Interspecific differences arise between them, during which they clarify the hierarchical roles or protect the territory. Aquarium gourami are practically incompatible with other members of their family. Naturally, when representatives of one species get along, but this does not apply to this species. Here everything is much more complicated. They constantly vie for the attention of the females, if there are few females in the aquarium for the male, he will not create a pair.

See how they fight gourami.

The fight between males can be extremely dangerous and lead to strong aggression, even worse than the attack of fish of another species. Compatibility is possible if one male and 2-3 females are placed in the tank for him. Then all the inhabitants will remain unharmed and happy. The labyrinth fins are usually thin and long, so they are easy to capture during rivalry.

Compatibility with other species

Aquarium gouras can live with other fish even better than with their closest congeners. Compatibility is possible with peaceful small fish that will swim in the middle and lower layers of water. There are also a number of representatives of the underwater world, with whom the gurus easily get along. Compatibility is possible with neons, iris, danios, battles, swordtails, tetras, catfish, minors. Representatives of the families of cichlids and scalar also get along with gourami.

It is not recommended to settle with large predators, with fast and active fish, playful. This applies to species that can pluck fins and constantly interfere, among them: barbs, cichlids, roosters, parrots fish, astronotus, goldfish.

Compatibility is not possible with discus, shrimp, guppy, since there will be a confrontation between them, or some will be eaten by others.

The following factors may cause conflicts between gouras and unrelated fish species:

  • Bright color or long, fluffy fins that attract caring neighbors. They can tear off the fins, or destroy the "handsome";
  • Disproportionate fish need space for swimming and life, if some fish swim at the upper layers, others at the bottom, this does not lead to collisions;
  • Insufficient aquarium volume and lack of personal swimming space, insufficient number of plants and shelters;
  • The main cause of conflict is the appearance of superiority in size, large aquarium fish immediately notice small fish, perceiving them for food.

Look at the aquarium with gourami, scalar and speckled catfish.

Compatibility criteria

To understand whether compatibility between species is possible, it is necessary to become familiar with the criteria of full, partial compatibility and incompatibility. With full compatibility, you can safely observe the life of fish, with partial threats of rivalry, in the absence of compatibility as such, fish do not need to be placed in one aquarium at all.

Couples gourami and fish compatibility:

  • Scalar and gourami: fully compatible
  • Barbus: partially compatible
  • Petushki: incompatible
  • African cichlids: incompatible
  • South American cichlids: incompatible
  • Corridors: fully compatible
  • Danio: fully compatible
  • Discusses: partially compatible
  • Lost: Partially compatible
  • Goldfish: incompatible
  • Gourami: partially
  • Guppy: Partially
  • Koi carps: incompatible
  • Botsii: fully

  • Astronotus: incompatible
  • Percylia: fully
  • Plekostomusy: fully
  • The iris: fully
  • Rasbory: fully
  • Labeo: completely

Neon fish: content, compatibility, reproduction, species, photo-video review

Neon content, compatibility, reproduction, species, photo-video review Neons are one of the most popular aquarium fish. These small shiny fish have long won the hearts of aquarists and have taken their deserved place among such mini-fish like guppies, swordtails and tetras.
Neon received such recognition due to its unpretentiousness, compactness and of course due to the neon coloring of the body.

Latin name: Paracheirodon

Order, family: carp-shaped, haracin
(on Lat. Characidae).
Comfortable water temperature: 18-24 ° C
(for manufacturers up to 22 ° C)
"Acidity" Ph:
5,5 - 8°.
(for future manufacturers pH up to 6.8 °)
Stiffness dH:5-20° .
(for future manufacturers - dH to 10 °)
Aggressiveness: not aggressive 0%.
The complexity of the content: easy

Neon Compatibility: non-aggressive, peaceful fish (neons, tetras, swordtails, petsyli, ornatus, pulchera, lanterns).
Not compatible: Neon can not be kept with large, aggressive fish: tsikhly, barbs, large catfish, goldfish, Labe, gourami.
How many live: The life of neon depends directly on the temperature of the aquarium water in which they are contained: 18 ° C - 4 years, 22 ° C - 3 years, 27 ° C - 1.5 years. As can be seen with increasing temperature, the biorhythm of life of neons also increases. That is why they, unlike many other aquarium fish, can and should even be kept in “cool” water. Find out how much other fish live IN THIS ARTICLE!
Minimum Neon Aquarium: from 10 liters, in such an aquarium you can put 4 neons. Neonchiki are schooling fish and therefore it is recommended to keep them in larger aquariums. For information on how much neon can be kept in the X aquarium, see HERE (at the bottom of the article there are links to aquariums of all volumes).

Requirements for care and conditions of neon

- neon necessarily need aeration and filtration, weekly water changes up to 1/3 of the volume of aquarium water.
- it is not necessary to cover the aquarium, although the fish are mobile, they do not jump out of the pond.
- lighting should be moderate. The aquarium is equipped with shading areas, which is achieved with the help of thickets of living plants, as well as with the help of floating plants.
- registration of an aquarium, for your taste and color: stones, grottoes, snags, other shelters. In the aquarium must be provided an open space for swimming.
Feeding and dieting neon: In principle, the fish are omnivores and are not whimsical to feed. We are happy to eat dry, live food and substitutes. But, like many aquarium fish, neons love live food: bloodworms, Artemia, choke, Cyclops, Daphnia. Neon food is taken from the surface of the water or in its thickness. Food that has fallen to the bottom may remain intact. Therefore, the fish should be fed in portions, so that the feed does not have time to fall to the bottom.

Feeding any aquarium fish should be correct: balanced, varied. This fundamental rule is the key to successful keeping of any fish, be it guppies or astronotuses. Article "How and how much to feed aquarium fish" talks in detail about this, it outlines the basic principles of the diet and feeding regime of fish.

In this article, we note the most important thing - feeding fish should not be monotonous; both dry and live food should be included in the diet. In addition, you need to take into account the gastronomic preferences of a particular fish and, depending on this, include in its diet ration either with the highest protein content or vice versa with vegetable ingredients.

Popular and popular feed for fish, of course, are dry food. For example, hourly and everywhere can be found on the aquarium shelves of food company "Tetra" - the leader of the Russian market, in fact, the range of feeds of this company is striking. In the "gastronomic arsenal" of Tetra are included as individual feeds for a certain type of fish: for goldfish, for cichlids, for loricarids, guppies, labyrinths, arovan, discus, etc. Also, Tetra has developed specialized foods, for example, for enhancing color, fortified or for feeding fry. Detailed information on all Tetra feeds, you can find on the official website of the company - here.

It should be noted that when buying any dry food, you should pay attention to the date of its production and shelf life, try not to buy food by weight, and also keep the food in a closed state - this will help avoid the development of pathogenic flora in it.

HISTORY OF NEONS

The homeland and natural habitat of neons are the streams and rivers of South America: Peru, Colombia, Brazil. Rivers - top p. The Amazons, from a certain São Paulo de Olivenza to Iquitos, live in the r. Putumayo and r. Purus do Boca do Tapaua. As you can see, the natural habitat of neon is very distant and mysterious. That is why the chronicle of these fish in the aquarium world is quite young. The starting point of neon as aquarium fish is the year 1935, when Frenchman A. Rabo discovered these neon fish in the waters of the river Putumayo (Eastern Peru).

Discoverer Auguste Rabo He was delighted and surprised by the beauty of the red-blue fish found, which prompted him to bring several individuals to the United States of America and to Old Europe. In a year - 1936 This species of extraordinary fish was studied and described by the American ichthyologist S. Myers. The second homeland of neon is Germany. This is due to the fact that it was the Germans who managed to first dissolve neons in artificial conditions. At that time - it was a sensation, since neither in the United States of America, nor in France did the fish breed in artificial conditions. The German breakthrough in the breeding of neons was caused not so much by the merits of man as by the presence in Germany of very soft water, which neon fish like so much. Description: Neon is a small, nimble fish. In aquarium conditions, males reach sizes up to 3 cm, and females slightly larger - up to 3.5 cm in length.
Neon Color: There are different types of neon and the color of each is different. In general, all neons are united by one thing - a neon strip passing along the whole body, which actually gives a reflection inherent only in these fish. Behavioral features: Neons - peaceful, gregarious, nimble fishes. Fish are great in the aquarium in a group with a large number. Their briskness requires from the aquarium - space, which is so necessary for maneuvers. The corridors (speckled catfish) are considered to be friends and helpers of neons, they do not interfere with the neonas to monitor the purity of the aquarium soil.

Breeding and breeding neon

Initially, I want to say that the reproduction of neons is not very complicated. At least, it does not require special difficult conditions or hormonal injections.

Sexual differences: Males of neons are smaller than females, somewhere about half a centimeter, they are much slimmer than "girls", and their neon side strip has a clear, even shape, without convolutions. In turn, the females are larger than the males, they are more complete "puzatee", the neon strip bends in the middle of the calf. Preparing for spawning: sexual maturation of neons occurs in 6-9 months. For successful breeding "neon parents" initially contain in comfortable conditions, which consist in the presence of a wide aquarium house, in a diverse feeding and comfortable water parameters. Before spawning, males and females are kept separately, fed abundantly with live food for half a month. When living separately, the water temperature is lowered to 19 ° C.
It is believed that the best producers are fish aged 10-12 months. IMPORTANT: strictly observe the recommended parameters of aquarium water and conditions of detention! From the very hard water, the eggs are not fertilized by sperm (the shell does not allow), but from the very bright light - the eggs die! Spawning aquarium arrangement: an aquarium of 40 centimeters in length, the bottom should be without soil, a separator grid should be installed at the bottom, the back and side of the aquarium should be darkened, the substrate should be dark. Water parameters in spawning: level 15 cm, temperature 20-22 ° C, hardness dH up to 2 °, KH 0 °, pH 5.5-6.5 °, lighting only natural. Spawning water is recommended to be disinfected with UV or ozone. Neon spawning: Having prepared an aquarium for spawning, males and females are planted in the afternoon towards the evening in the ratio of 1: 1 or 3 males per 1 female. Usually, fish spawn at dawn the next morning. However, this process may take 3 days. During the spawning period, neons do not feed anything.
Females toss non-sticky eggs at a time from 50 to 200 eggs.
Immediately after spawning my parents, I set them aside, and the spawning dish is darkened (remember the light is destructive for caviar !!!). It is necessary to set aside producers, as they eat fry.
Within four hours after spawning, it is necessary to monitor the roe and, when the eggs appear white, immediately remove them.
The incubation period for neon caviar is approximately 22 hours.

Neon Fry Care

Juveniles of neons begin to swim already on the 4-5 day, until this point the larvae almost without moving and hang in a spawning aquarium.

Malki require mandatory aeration, water temperature 20-22 ° C and daily replacement of 1/10 of the volume of water, the water in the aquarium should be at a level of up to 10 centimeters.
From the moment the fry begin to swim (4-5 days), they must often be fed in portions. As a starter feed, you need to use special feed for young fish. Such food is sold in many pet stores, for example, TETRA MIN Baby and TETRA MIN Junior or SERA MICROGRAN. You can also feed: grinded boiled egg yolk, rotifers and infusoria.

Growing neon fry, should be carefully treated with lighting spawning aquarium. The lighting is gradually increased, 100% - ordinary lighting can be done only after the young become “on their feet”, and this happens by the 1st month of life. Otherwise, the fry will simply lose orientation.

What ill neons

Fish can get virtually all kinds of contagious and non-infectious diseases. Neons, being small and fragile fish, do not tolerate stress (for example, if they are driven by "bad neighbors"), as well as uncomfortable water parameters and the absence of a schooling lifestyle - which, together and separately, can lead to diseases (for example, ichthyophysis - manke) . Have neons and a disease inherent only to them - plistophorosis or else it is called "neon disease". This infection manifests itself in the form of fading areas on the body of fish - in neons, blue and red stripes fade. The disease is in fact not curable!

USEFUL TIPS:

- neon is better to feed once a day and regularly arrange fasting days (once a week), which in turn will contribute to the health of the fish.
- when making out an aquarium for neons, you should use dark tones of the soil and background.
- a sign of bad health or stress in neons is the blanching of their color, they can fade up to complete graying.
- you should carefully use aquarium preparations containing copper - neons do not tolerate it.

Interesting facts about neons
"Neons: a bloody story" As it was already said before, a certain French national, Auguste Rabo, was the first person to become interested in neons. Well, since he was a dashing businessman and was looking for gold in the tropical forests of the Amazon River, he also caught exotic butterflies and collected orchids, again not for idle curiosity, but for further sale - the reflection of neon fish greedily reflected in gold in his insatiable eyes .
Everyone knows that greed and greed do not lead to good because they are included in the list of deadly sins. Rabo paid for it. And it all happened like this:
Auguste Rabo wandered through the Amazon rainforest and picked up the infection - tropical fever. Benefit pumped his local aborigines - Peruvian Indians. Having labeled Rabo in one of the Indian huts, he first saw the neons that were floating in a makeshift dish. It was then that the business idea of Rabo was ripe, as it was making money on these brilliant little fish.
He organized the transportation of fish to the continent, and the poor neonchik was pushed into wooden crates, missed the gaps with resin, and in addition to the fish during transportation, they did not feed anything. However, the neons were tenacious and safely reached the United States of America.
Most of the surviving neon Rabo sent to Germany, and the rest gave fanatic and connoisseur of tropical fish - William Innesi. Remembering the nature of O. Rabo, it should be said that this was done not out of the goodness of his heart, but for the purpose of a complaint - after all, Innes was the publisher of an aquarium magazine and Rabo hoped to publish an article about his mega discovery, with all the ensuing profit consequences ...
The article was published, moreover, Inessi handed over the fish to ichthyologist D. Mayers, who in 1936 published a scientific work describing a new type of fish and named them in honor of Inessi - Paracheirodon innesi.

- The state of Philadelphia, USA was born, where he graduated from school. Upon graduation, began to work with his father in publishing. In 1917 he published his first book, "On Goldfish". In 1932 founded his famous magazine "Aquarium", which lasted 35 years. In addition, since 1920, Innes has regularly organized aquarium exhibitions. Also in 1932 published the book "Exotic Aquarium Fish", which was regularly reprinted.
George Myers (1938-1970) - US national: ichthyologist, zoologist and herpetologist, was a professor at Stanford University, from 1942 to 1994. - Professor of the National Museum of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro. So began the neon boom! Employees of the largest aquarium companies have ousted Auguste Raboh, generously and regularly paying him decent sums for the supply of neons. Aquarium dealers hoped to multiply them and thereby return the money spent on Rabo. Yes, it was not there, all the swept up neon caviar died for unknown reasons.
In turn, Rabo, realizing the benefits of his monopoly position, strictly kept the secret of the neon's habitat and secretly left for Amazon for a new batch of fish. This situation lasted for three years until spies of aquarium companies traced Rabo by the Ucayali River, where he was killed. A year later, the delivery of neon fish was arranged without the participation of the deceased.
Neons, what else ?! - Neon is called the initiators of aquarium chemistry. This is due to the fact that for their breeding and obtaining the “desired soft, spawning water” aquarists had to carefully study the hydrochemistry of water, because of which the aquarium case went up to an even higher level.
- Caviar and young neon catastrophically afraid of lighting, from which they inevitably die. Such a malicious joke is played with them by the neon genetic program, which allows the fish to develop only in the twilight, as it happens in the tropical environment of the Amazon River.
- Neons have scales, but under it the skin, which consists of special pigment cells - chromatophore. Actually, they produce from the blood the neon-metallic color of the fish.
- Fish do not emit light, it is only a reflection and refraction of the incident rays of light.
- Not only neons, but also many other inhabitants of the aquarium world can glow with neon. For example, neon goby oceanops (Elacatinus oceanops), the size of which is comparable to neon and is 5 cm.

in the photo is a neon bull - Many lovers of the aquarium world are wondering, why does neonam need such an eye-catching color, is it very dangerous? Until now, there is no scientific explanation for this color of fish. There is only an assumption that they need it to attract a partner in the mating season, as well as to confuse the predator, confusing it when the flock of neons crumbles. 1.Kochetov S. "Neons and small haracinids"
2. Kochetov S. "Characteristic in an aquarium: from neons to piranhas"
The author of the book tells about many species of tropical fish, including neon fish and other small species. From the books you will learn how to prepare an aquarium for neons, their conditions of detention, feeding and breeding.
