How to make an aquarium with your own hands at home

Glass aquarium do it yourself

Standard glass aquarium can be purchased at any pet store. But if you are sure that you can make it yourself, you should try using the necessary details and instructions. There are cases when it is inconvenient to transport a bulky product, especially over long distances - for sure it will be damaged.

Selection of materials for construction

To make an aquarium with your own hands, you will need the following tools and materials:

  • Aquarium silicate glue;
  • Gun with glue dispenser;
  • Glass cutting file;
  • Painting tape;
  • Centimeter or ruler;
  • Porous sponge 2 pcs .;
  • Rag from natural fabric.

Now you need to decide what type of glass is suitable for the manufacture of structures. First of all, pay attention to the thickness of the product. When water is poured into the tank, all parts are installed, they will exert considerable pressure on the bottom and walls. In a large container, the glass thickness should be several centimeters more. If the width of the glass is insufficient, any mechanical damage will result in cracking and leakage.

Aquarium 50 cm long and 30 cm high should have a glass thickness of 5-8 mm. When gluing large capacity (100 cm to 60 cm), you will need a glass width of 10 mm. If you choose organic glass, you must apply the same calculations. Few people make their own plexiglass aquarium. The reason - its rapid turbidity, low quality. During the cleaning of algae with a scraper, noticeable damage is formed on the walls of the tank.

You also need to choose glass with great care. The recommended material is M1, which does not contain any impurities or microscopic air bubbles. Glasses of this type are often used when installing store windows. Then pay attention to the choice of glue. Superglue "Moment" does not fit - it is too toxic. Give preference to silicone aquarium glue. It is harmless and airtight. Check with the seller that it is made specifically for mounting aquarium glass and other hard surfaces. Do not buy cheap brands of glue, they are unlikely to be of high quality.

The first stages of manufacturing the structure

It is impossible to make an aquarium with your own hands without the use of tools, but if they are found, you have high chances. Rectangular glass container is prepared in stages. First you need to prepare the glass parts.

  1. You can make an aquarium with a volume of 20 liters. Successfully obtained designs volume of 50 liters. Professional masters can make 500-800 liter tanks, but the skill is gained with experience. Measure the glass for the bottom, end walls, rear and front sides. The edges of the glasses should not be ground.
  2. The product plan must be designed in such a way that the bottom of the tank is inside the vertical walls of glass. Silicone glue fastens better for stretching.
  3. All parts of the glass near the areas where the line will be glued, you need to glue on both sides with stripes of masking tape. Its edges should recede from the edge of the wall or bottom at the level of 5-6 mm. This will prevent the sealant from contaminating the glass during bonding. Plots of the future joint must be treated with acetone for degreasing.
  4. Apply a few drops of silicone around the perimeter of the bottom glass. After a few hours, cut it so that the frozen silicone was 1-2 mm thick. Points will be visible that determine the thickness of the glue seam. Avoid adhering the glass parts so that under pressure from the sides and the load, there is no damage.
  5. After that, gluing should be carried out on a table covered with plastic wrap. Attach and glue the front wall. So that she could not fall down, put props on both sides.
  6. With your own hands, squeeze out the aquarium silicone gradually so that the seam comes out evenly. Then attach and seal the end glass. Fix it with the masking tape against the front wall. Similarly, glue the second end glass, and the back wall. Carefully clean up the remaining amount of sealant with a sponge or a cloth dampened with water.
  7. After 2-2.5 hours, apply an additional ball of silicone glue to the joints to ensure the strength of the structure. After another 60 minutes, remove the masking tape, and evenly clean the seams with a razor blade.

Wall reinforcement

Further, you need to arrange stiffeners with your own hands. They can be made from samples of the same type of glass with a width of 6-10 cm. Glue the ribs in the upper part of the vertical walls. The ribs with a length of 4-6 cm shorter from the length of each wall can provide uniform pressure over the entire surface. This stage is relevant for spacious tanks. After 24 hours, you can test the glued container under pressure. If no leaks are noticed, then the aquarium, made by hand, can be considered ready.

This method of bonding can be used in the manufacture of enlarged aquariums. But here you need to stock up on thicker glass, stiffeners at the top and bottom, as well as a system for fixing vertical walls when gluing the corner clamps. After the carried out manipulations, it is possible to build in aquarian designs.

Depending on the type of equipment used, holes should be made in the bottom or in the side wall, and short nipples should be glued in there. You can carefully cut off the necks from the glass bottles, insert them into the holes with the edge of the neck out, and hermetically fix with silicone glue in diameter. Hoses from external equipment are put on adapters made by hand.

How to make a tank cover

Aquarium cover with your own hands can be made of organic glass, plastic or silicate glass. Note the size of your new aquarium. Nowadays, the most popular cover material is PVC, or polyvinyl chloride (foam).

See how to make a cover for the aquarium with your own hands.

If you have a small tank aquarium, then the cover can be made of construction plastic with a thickness of 3-5 mm. But it is not recommended to lay on the glass. That is, initially it is necessary to prepare the sides of plastic, cut strips along the length of the walls with a width of 6-10 cm. This will be the height of the side. The frame can be glued with resin or plastic glue. The corner joint is reinforced with a glued metal corner. Then the cover can be mounted on the aquarium.

A good method of attaching the bumpers to the upper part of the container is obtained by means of a PVC cable channel. On both sides of the channel there are grooves where you need to insert both the walls of the tank and the lengths of the rim. Therefore, it must be selected in accordance with the thickness of the glass. All lines of the joint must be sealed with silicone glue.

Then attach the hinges to the rear edge to raise the cover. Hinges can be either glued or bolted together. In the plastic surface of the cover you need to make a square hole so that it is captured and lifted. Through this hole you will feed the fish. If you notice that the plastic bends, in the inner surface, along its length it is worth making a gain with a light corner of aluminum. The resulting corner will be mounting for lighting lamps.

In order to quietly go into the aquarium all the wiring and hoses from the equipments, at the stage of gluing the frame, carefully cut the holes in the side of the rim. This is done with a drill. You can make the same holes on the opposite side to improve ventilation inside the tank. After this stage, you can install aquarium equipment, and fix lighting fixtures inside the cover.

Light bulbs for lighting is recommended to choose in advance. New types - LED and fluorescent, in which the power of 0.4-0.5 watts per liter of water. The spectrum of light should depend on the type of fish and plants that will settle in the pond. It is not recommended to install a lot of incandescent bulbs with tungsten filament. They heat the water too much, which can lead to a deterioration of the condition of all living creatures. Lamps must be under special protective glass. If you wish, you can decorate the aquarium cover with your own hands, using a self-adhesive film. The resulting product will be much cheaper.

DIY Aquarium Decorations

The most simple crafts from improvised tools will help beat your aquarium. Making the scenery with your own hands, you will save money and be able to decorate the water space of your pets in the ideal key for you.

How to make pipe decorations for aquarium?

Most likely, you will find plumbing pipes on the farm. Why not use these trim again?

  1. Take pieces of pipes of small diameter 8-10 cm long.

    They need to glue or solder in an arbitrary manner.

  2. To give the original form of such a design will help high temperature. After processing, we obtain:
  3. At the moment, "construction" can not be considered aesthetically attractive. In the future, the walls will be covered with a layer of cement mortar. For its high-quality fixation on the pipes it is necessary to make various notches.
  4. For the final finish, use the solution and brush.

Alternatively, you can decorate the pipes with stones. For example, take plumbing and sealant. Apply it with a solid layer and immediately "dip" the product into small pebbles.

Make a few such cylinders and place them in a row in the aquarium.

Self-made decorations for a foam foam aquarium

Here is another creative idea for the scenery. Intricate shapes can be crafted with foam rubber. So, you will need foam rubber, a brush, mounting foam, scissors, toothpicks, tile glue, silicone and acrylic paint for outdoor work. Foam can be easily made not only a "pile of stones", but also various grottoes for fish.

  1. Cut a solid piece of foam that matches the size of the back wall of your tank. Next you have to turn on the fantasy and create the grotto you want it to be.
  2. When the frame is ready, its elements need to be fixed. Use foam and gun.
  3. When the workpiece has dried, dilute the tile adhesive to a thick cream. Apply the mixture on the frame in 3-4 layers with gentle movements of the brush, giving each of them time to dry.
  4. The final step - take a sponge, moisten it in an acrylic composition and apply to the scenery. This will give the design a more attractive look. Since the foam is very light, it is necessary to fix it on a rigid base. It may be a piece of glass.

Place the scenery in the water for 3 days "soak", then you can move it directly to the fish tank in the aquarium.
