Waterfall in the aquarium with their own hands

You can see completely different options for the internal design of the aquarium, even the most unusual. Aquascape is a fascinating activity, and its fans sometimes use unexpected space design techniques. One of these techniques is the installation of an aquarium waterfall.

What it is?

At first glance, the very phrase "aquarium waterfall" seems absurd. And really: how, from where and where can the water fall, if the aquarium is already filled with it? Of course, if the "bank" is flooded with water, for example, up to half, then such a device can be placed so that the top of the waterfall is above the level of aqua. However, will it fully imitate a cascade of a stream of water rushing down from above? Of course not.

But in a terrarium, a waterfall installed at the side wall looks quite appropriate, and such a design of terrariums is often found in practice.

Nevertheless, aquascapers have found a way out, and waterfalls adorn many home and office aquariums. Only in this case it would be appropriate to talk about sandfall, since it is sand that falls down from the height. However, outwardly creates a beautiful illusion of this waterfall.

What is the principle of such a device?

Obviously, the sand must somehow rise up and then flow down to the foot of the hill. Indeed, this is exactly what happens with the help of an air compressor, which creates a vacuum in the tube, where sand comes from a special tank.

In applied physics, this is called injection. The mass of sand grains rises up and, reaching the outlet, flows down. It remains only to ensure that this process is continuous, and the sand is not stuck in the pipeline.

The business promptly responded to the requests of professionals and amateurs of aqua-design, and soon the waterfalls for aquariums of various shapes, sizes, and a wide price range appeared on the shelves of specialized stores. Such decorative aquarium devices come in the form of a mock sphinx, in the form of a tower, rock, stalactite.

However, many fans of aquascaping get real pleasure precisely when such a device is made with their own hands. In the literature and on special sites aquarium you can find many examples of the manufacture and installation of sand pads of various configurations, power and a variety of appearance.

How to make a waterfall on your own

First of all, you need to determine how to create an injection effect. To do this, fit a normal aquarium compressor, which is a necessary accessory of almost every aquarium. The air that he gives must trap the grains of sand and carry them up the tube. Thus, for the manufacture of "waterfall" will require:

  • rigid support for the structure, the height of which is calculated on the basis of the size of the entire sandfall;
  • a rubber hose of small cross section (from 10 to 15 mm), its length also corresponds to the height of the future structure;
  • hoses from the dropper system;
  • empty plastic bottle (with a capacity of 1.5 liters, for example);
  • Scotch;
  • silicone glue for aquarium;
  • light stones for the construction of a natural grotto or rock.

As a support, you can use any plastic pipe. To make it stable, you can glue a rectangular base to it. Putting this support in the aquarium, you can then put a few stones on the base; This will give the structure stability.

Technical part. Silicone rubber hose should be attached to the support in such a way that its top is 1-2 cm above the water level in the aquarium (for air outlet). At the bottom of the rubber tube (5-6 cm from the bottom) is a slot. The bottom edge of the slot must be bent. A cumulative bowl will then be inserted into this slot, where falling sand will be collected.

Bowl to collect sand is made from trimming a plastic bottle. First, the tapered part is cut off, the threaded neck is removed. Then the upper part of the cut bottle is cut in half lengthwise. It turns out some kind of scoop, which will play the role of the team bowl. This "scoop" is inserted into the main hose (or pipe) at the slot, fixed with adhesive tape (temporarily) and glued with silicone.

Assembly. A system hose (droppers) is attached to the lower edge of the main tube; it is through it that the air from the compressor will flow. A large slot is also made at the top of the pipe slightly below the water level; sand will be poured out of there.

In principle, the sandfall is ready. It remains only to "turn on" the fantasy and decorate it according to the general plan.

When the construction is dry, it is installed in the selected place of the aquarium and put into operation. Naturally, it is necessary to fill the sand in the cumulative bowl.

Sand for waterfall

The choice of sand in this case plays a very important role. To the illusion of the waterfall was the most complete, you need to choose the sand based on several factors.

  • Firstly, it should not be too small, since under the influence of the air flow it will fly apart in different directions (sprayed).
  • Secondly, the sand should not be too large: large sand grains can create a cork in the main highway.

Therefore, in order to achieve the desired effect of a falling stream, the fraction of sand for each specific product is almost always selected by experience.

Perhaps every aquarist in love with his work wants his offspring to stand out with some special element of decor. A hand-made underwater waterfall that fits well into the overall interior of an aquarium can be just such an important element.

Make sure that the "sandfall" in the aquarium looks as impressive as a real waterfall, you can video:

Waterfall in the aquarium with their own hands

When we plan to design our own aquarium, we naturally try to find the most amazing and interesting elements of decor that will help to unusually revive our underwater kingdom. One of these is the underwater waterfall in the aquarium. This amazing aquarium miracle is actually a stream of fine white or clear sand circulating in the system. He gets from the bowl into the tube, with the help of a compressor with air bubbles is fed out, creating the desired effect of a waterfall, and then falls back into the bowl.

Waterfall in the aquarium with your own hands can be done quickly and easily by following simple instructions. It does not require special skills, moreover, such a device is quite cheap. In our master class we will show you how to make a waterfall in an aquarium. For this we need:

  • 1.5 l plastic bottle - 1 pc .;
  • 0.5 l plastic bottle;
  • dropper - 1 pc .;
  • rubber water hose with a diameter of 1.2 cm - 30 cm;
  • plastic water pipe 37 cm;
  • silicone sealant;
  • compressor - 1 pc .;
  • narrow adhesive tape;
  • knife.

Making a waterfall in the aquarium with your own hands

  1. We take a plastic plumbing tube and cut its three parts along. Bend them down and get support for the future of the waterfall.
  2. Glue germerikom tube with a hose.
  3. Departing from the bottom edge of the hose 3 cm, we make an incision of an oval shape measuring 2x1 cm.
  4. From the bottle of 1.5 liters and cut off the top and neck with a thread.
  5. Make an incision along the resulting bowl, and put it on the hose, bending back the incision made earlier (2x1 cm).
  6. We adjust the diameter of the bowl and glue the curved ends with thin tape.
  7. Thoroughly glue sealant place the junction of the bowl with a hose and leave to dry.
  8. At the top of the hose with the edge diagonally make an oval cut, size 2.5x1 cm.
  9. From the dropper, take a plastic tip and with glue, fasten it to the lower end of the hose and leave to dry.
  10. We put on the tip of the tube from the dropper, connect the other end of the tube with the compressor.
  11. We check the work of our waterfall made with their own hands in the aquarium. If everything works, proceed to the manufacture of the cap visor. It will regulate the release of sand.
  12. Take a plastic bottle of 0.5 liters and cut off the upper part, cutting off the neck with a thread. The result is a bowl 3 cm high.
  13. We make an incision on the side of the bowl, and fasten it to the top of the hose so as not to block the opening for the exit of air bubbles.
  14. Fix the visor with narrow tape and glue to the hose with a sealant. We leave our almost finished waterfall in the aquarium to dry out.
  15. When everything is ready, you can begin to decorate the waterfall with stones at your discretion. It is better to paste over a section of the future rock where the sand will crumble directly into smaller stones to form a depression. That's what we did.

How to make a waterfall in an aquarium with your own hands

Nowadays, aquarium owners prefer waterfalls as a stylish and original decor element. He looks very beautiful and spectacular. At first glance, the phrase "waterfall in an aquarium" seems absurd. Whence and where does water fall when the reservoir is already filled with it? Sand comes to the aid of the aquascapers, because it is the one that flows down from the top down. Due to this, the illusion of a waterfall is created. Is it possible to create such a decoration at home? And what will it take to make a waterfall in an aquarium with your own hands?

The principle of the waterfall in the aquarium

Today, specialty stores are ready to offer a wide range of decorations in the form of a waterfall. Lovers of aqua design can purchase such a device by choosing the appropriate shape, size and cost. Waterfalls in stores can take various forms, such as the sphinx, tower, stalactite or rock. The kit contains all the necessary elements that are needed for assembly and connection.

But aquascapers get real pleasure when they make this spectacular element of décor at home. How to make a waterfall in an aquarium with your own hands? First of all, it is necessary to understand the principle of its work. The effect of falling water is achieved by flowing small grains of sand. First of all, you need to understand how the sand will rise to the surface, and then sink to the bottom. This is due to the air compressor, which creates a vacuum effect in the tube in which the sand is located. Applied physics defines a similar phenomenon as injection. The grains of sand go up in the tube, and, having reached the outlet, flow down under the action of their weight. Consequently, the main tasks in the design of the waterfall is to ensure two things: the continuity of this process and the patency of the pipe along which the sand rises.

Necessary components for making a waterfall

In the manufacture of the waterfall will require patience and accuracy. But if everything is done correctly, the result will surely please you with its beauty and originality.

How to make a waterfall in an aquarium with your own hands? The first step is to determine which unit will provide the injection effect. For this purpose, a great compressor for the aquarium, which is a necessary attribute of almost any home for fish. The injected air will trap the grains of sand and lift them through the tube. The compressor is the first and main component for the manufactured device. You will also need the following items:

  • Support for the waterfall, made of hard material. Its height corresponds to the size of the entire design of the decor. Any plastic pipe is perfect for use as a support. For stability, attach it to a rectangular base.
  • Rubber hose section 10-15 millimeters. Its length will correspond to the height of the support from the previous point.
  • The tube from the system for dropper.
  • Scotch.
  • Plastic bottle with a capacity of 1.5 liters.
  • Silicone glue.
  • Stones of low weight for decorating designs.

Making waterfall details

How to make a waterfall in an aquarium? To the support, made of plastic pipe, with silicone you need to attach a hose of rubber. Its upper part should rise one to two centimeters above the surface of the water in the aquarium to allow air to escape.

At the bottom of the hose at a distance of five to six centimeters from the edge should be cut. Subsequently, a bowl for collecting falling sand will be inserted into this hole. It is recommended to make such capacity from a plastic bottle. To do this, cut off the upper tapering part, then get rid of the neck and thread and cut the remaining funnel into two halves. This element, which looks like a scoop, will serve as a bowl for collecting sand.

Build waterfall design

When all the components of the design are ready, you can proceed to the layout. To collect the waterfall in the aquarium, you first need to make the prefab sand tank into the rubber hose at the slot, which was made earlier, temporarily fix with adhesive tape and glue with silicone glue.

Next, you need to attach a thin tube system for the dropper to the bottom edge of the rubber hose. It will be supplied through the air injected by the compressor.

At the top of the main rubber hose, you need to make a large slot, from which sand will pour. This hole should be located just below the water level in the aquarium. For proper and uniform operation of the device, this slot should be covered with a thin padding polyester, which will function as a filter.

The waterfall for the aquarium is almost ready. It is recommended to ensure that all the joints of the structure are well sealed with silicone in order to avoid weakening the injection. Next, it remains to show imagination and make decorating the device.

Dressing

When installing a waterfall, it is recommended to put a few stones on top of a rectangular base. They will simultaneously serve both as design objects and as elements giving stability to the device. To decorate the structure, use a sheet of waterproof material to hide the support and the rubber hose and leave only the falling sand in view. For additional decor, you can place a composition of stones, drifts and plants near the waterfall.

If you place the structure in the center of the aquarium, the tank will be divided into two parts. It looks unaesthetic. Therefore, you should install a waterfall near the walls or in the corner of the house for fish.

Recommendations for choosing sand

The sand used in the construction influences the fullness of the waterfall illusion. It should be chosen, guided by such principles:

  • Do not use too fine sand, because the air flow can spray it in different directions.
  • Too coarse fraction of bulk material is not recommended, as larger sand grains can create congestion inside the rubber hose.

Waterfall in the aquarium will look more impressive, elegant and unique, if you use colored artificial sand.

Before you finally install the design in the tank, you should conduct several experiments using bulk material of different fractions and choose the right one that will create the necessary drop effect.

A waterfall in an aquarium is a fashionable and unusual element of modern art for creating an underwater landscape. Each fish breeder dreams that his pets' house stands out with a special, original element of decor. It is a waterfall, created by yourself, and will be such a highlight, successfully fit into the overall interior of the aquarium. Moreover, to manufacture such a device is not too difficult.
