The film on the water in the aquarium

In the life of each aquarium, sometimes unpleasant events occur that negatively affect the well-being of its inhabitants. One of these undesirable moments is the appearance of a film on the surface of the water. True, this is not fatal, and if you take urgent measures, then this situation can be safely corrected.

Causes of film formation

There are several of them, and each case should be considered separately.

Harmful Chemistry. It happens that a thin surface oily layer is formed in a new aquarium. Sometimes he even shimmers with all the colors of the rainbow. Such a phenomenon is observed if substances evolving soluble components have appeared inside the aquarium. This can occur due to improper putty (when gluing or repairing the "can"), as well as when placing inside the aquarium elements of the decor, painted with nitro-paint, linseed oil or oil paints.

Heating appliances. An oily film may appear due to the use of oil radiators to heat the room where the aquarium is located. The fumes caused by their work can even cause poisoning of aquarium animals. In the case when such radiators are working, experts strongly recommend closing the aquarium with a lid.

Organics. If a pale gray foil has formed on the water surface, the reason for its appearance may be an excess of residual food in the water, waste products of fish and other inhabitants, as well as plant rot. Thus, this phenomenon has an organic nature, and the listed elements are an excellent feed for saprophyte bacteria. Actually, this film consists of these very bacteria.

Seaweed. Another common cause of the phenomenon under consideration is the proliferation of microscopic algae, which thrive when water stagnates.

Priming. It is also possible the emergence of a harmful surface layer and the acidification of the soil. In this case, the colloidal layer consists of the smallest particles of soil and carbon dioxide. The nature of this phenomenon is as follows: upon acidification, the acid reacts with the substrate of the soil, as a result of which carbon dioxide bubbles are released. Rising to the surface, they carry with them microscopic particles of rotting substrate.

Briefly, the nature of the film and its composition can be described as follows: dead microorganisms, live bacteria, fats, chemicals.

By the way, there are cases when one type of "sick" surface water layer passes into another.

Thus, the process of film formation in an aquarium is almost always based on insufficient purification of the aquatic environment.

How does the film affect the state of the home aqua system

In this matter there is no consensus. Some experienced aquarists argue that the organic film does not bring much harm. For example, it prevents the release of CO2 to the surface, which contributes to the good development of aquatic vegetation.

However, most experts are inclined to believe that such a phenomenon is harmful to the inhabitants of the aquarium. In such a situation, the enrichment of water with oxygen becomes difficult, the process of evaporation of water practically stops, the heat balance is disturbed. Under these conditions, the temperature of the aqua can rise, and the fish will simply start to choke.

Only in one case, the experts are unanimous: if the film appeared due to the dissolution of chemicals in the water, then the source of this "chemistry" must be removed as soon as possible, and the film itself must be eliminated.

How to get rid of the film on the water

First of all, it should be noted that the presence of effective filtration and strong aeration reduces the problem to zero. Aquarium water is constantly mixed, and this prevents the occurrence of the film. But if it still appeared, there are a number of good ways to solve the problem.

Using paper

The most tried and true old way is to remove a film using a sheet of paper (newspaper, napkin). Everything is very simple: you need to put paper on the surface of the water, wait a bit, and then, carefully taking the sheet floating on the surface by the edges, gently pull it out of the container. Surface dirt and mucus remains on the paper. So you can do 2-3 times. Fast and efficient, isn't it?

With the help of snails

If the cause of the appearance of a thin film is the remnants of organic matter, then you can run into the aquarium capacity several tiny snails with a round shell called Fiza pimply (or Australian fizi). These snails are attached to the walls of the aquarium at the surface of the water and actively eat microscopic remnants of food and fish waste products. The film quickly disappears. You should know, however, that these snails multiply rapidly, their number must be adjusted.

Using technical devices

Perfectly cope with dirty film special technical devices. For example, the VUPPA-1 surface extractor, which is attached directly to a vertical glass, quickly and effectively removes all harmful elements from the surface of the water.

This device, in appearance resembling a glass, collects the upper layer of water, which then passes through 3 stages of filtration inside the device. Purified water then returns to the aquarium. The device has proven itself in large-capacity aquariums.

Ultraviolet and antibiotics

The most radical means of removing unwanted bacteria from the water surface is intense ultraviolet radiation.

UV rays kill harmful microorganisms, which are then removed in the old "old-fashioned" way - using a blotter.

The same effect is achieved with the help of antibiotics. In the aquarium, dissolve several tablets of biomitsin at the rate of 1 tablet per 10 liters of aqua, thereby producing disinfection of the aquatic environment.

The main condition for the last two events - the removal of all living creatures from the aquarium before the procedure.

One more thing. Those people who cover the top of the aquarium cover, do absolutely right. This measure contributes to the fact that room dust does not settle on the water surface.

Defeating a harmful bacterial or chemical film is not difficult. But it is better, of course, not to allow it to appear. To do this, it is enough to have a reliable, efficient aqua-filter and aerator for continuous mixing of water.

Why does water foam and need to do something

Some distributors of ornamental fish and other water pets periodically encountered the problem of pollution and the formation of foam in the aquarium. There are several factors that affect water performance: some are related to the lifetime of the tank, others are related to the frequency of care and maintenance, and others are related to external factors. If water foams in the home aquarium - what are the causes of this phenomenon, and how to clean the liquid?

Water clarifiers with the effect of water purification

The first step in eliminating any water contamination is finding the best way to remove dirt. There are many chemicals that partially purify water, but they only hide the "symptoms" that are solved by proper care of the tank.

Chemical granules remove superficial contamination, while water can be cleaned on its own within a few hours, otherwise artificial purification will not affect the water indicators at all. Aquarists who have problems with frothy water use these preparations for water. As a result, the water foams even more, acquiring a milky white shade.

Why does water foaming and bubbling in new aquariums

When you first launched a new aquarium, it begins a new cycle, so the biological components of the filter are ready to eliminate fish waste. Clear or "milky" water may be the result of such a process, but usually it appears at the end of this cycle. If the fish tank is only a few weeks old, or it only works for a couple of days, the water can also foam and bubble.

Bubbles are formed both on the surface of the water and in the middle layers. It can bubble when the aquarium is just started, and ammonia, nitrates have not eroded from the water, or during the first aeration of water. Unfortunately, the only way to remove bubbles on the surface is to be patient. When the cycle is completed, the foaminess will disappear by itself, the water will again become crystal clear. Otherwise, additional measures will have to be taken.

See how to clean the aquarium filter.

If there is no fish in the aquarium, but water foams on the surface

  1. If the tank is new and the fish have not been settled in it (the new cycle has not started), then white or gray foam may occur due to the presence of untreated snags or other decorations that should be washed with cool running water before introducing it into the aquarium.

  1. When installing an unwashed filter, its contaminated mechanical elements may trash debris causing foam. Filter is recommended to disassemble, wash.

  1. It is possible that some object that is used as decoration in the aquarium, dissolved in water, or otherwise it is not safe for the aquarium. It can produce any foam color, although gray or milky white is the most common. The item must be removed, it is also recommended to change the water.
  2. Buy aquarium decorations in proven pet stores. Carefully check the rocks, grottoes, caves and coconuts before installing in the tank. If, after treatment with running water, they change shape, melt, become soft - this is a bad signal. It means that there are weak spots in them, it is better not to place them in the water.
  3. Make sure that the decorations are not painted, that the paint does not peel off, or discolor. If there is salted water in the aquarium, or it is reefy (for African cichlids), it is recommended to remove coral skeletons or seashells from it, which can increase the level of pH and water hardness. After removing the harmful elements, the frothy water should go off, the water parameters will return to normal. Additional pond filtration will also help.

What else provokes the formation of foam in the aquarium

  1. Chemicals (medicine for fish and fertilizer for plants) can react with organic substances, creating a frothy “cloud” on the surface of the water. To prevent this, minimize the use of chemicals and additives in water. Before adding drugs to the general aquarium, test it in a separate container with water to get an idea of the consequences. The problem will fix the change of water and filtering.
  2. Irregular renewal of water to fresh and clean provokes foaming of the surface. Garbage, waste in the form of under-fed food, scales accumulate and begin to either float or dissolve. Cyanobacteria can also bloom, causing cloudy water. Again, update 10-20% of the water weekly.
  3. Frequent water changes are also not always appropriate. Permanent procedures (2-3 times a week) cause turbidity of water, and the bacteria that provide biological filtration simply disappear before they can recover. Regular, portioned water changes will help keep the nursery clean, fresh and healthy.

  1. Abundant feeding of fish, amphibians and reptiles also leads to pollution of the aquatic environment. Feed portions. The stomachs of animals are not so big as to consume feed bags. They have enough feed for two minutes.
  2. Overcrowding in the nursery also adversely affects water quality. A large number of fish do not get along with each other, are under constant stress, which impairs their appearance and shortens their life. In addition, it provokes the growth of algae, additional maintenance, as a result - the formation of foam on the surface. It is possible to settle 1 small fish per 10 liters of water, 20-30 liters - one big fish, which will reduce the amount of foam in the water.
  3. If the aquarium is not sufficiently filtered, or a poor-quality filter is installed that is not properly maintained, the water will not be effectively treated. In addition, it will not be cleansed of impurities of organic matter, algae, cyanobacteria and foam may appear later. Regular testing of the filter and its design can detect the cause of the problem by preventing it.

Causes of water turbidity and how to deal with it

Muddy water in an aquarium is a common phenomenon that almost every aquarist has encountered. Sometimes the causes of the problem are found quickly, and sometimes it takes a long time to figure out why the water has become cloudy. How to deal with the formation of turbidity, what is recommended to do and what is not?

When does water appear in the water?

The causes of muddy water in an aquarium can be varied, and it is not as easy to deal with them as it seems at first glance.

  1. Turbidity can occur due to swimming in the pond of small particles of algae, solid organics and cyanobacteria. There is another unobtrusive reason - poor washing of the aquarium soil and inaccurate pouring water from a clean tank. This type of turbidity does not threaten the water and the fish, you can do nothing with it. After some time, the muddy part of the water will settle, or seep into the filter, remaining there. The formation of turbidity can provoke fish who love to plow the ground, but these actions for the reservoir are completely harmless.

  1. Turbid water in an aquarium can be caused by cichlids, goldfish and tail finch fish - their active movement in a reservoir is the cause of the resulting turbidity. If a filter is not installed in the tank, it will be difficult to clean the water.
  2. Often, muddy water appears after the first start of the aquarium, after the fresh water inlet. Nothing to do, in a day or two the sediment will fall to the ground and disappear. The mistake of novice aquarists is a partial or complete renewal of water, which is considered a gross error. When adding new water to a newly launched aquarium, the bacteria will become even more! If the aquarium is small, you can install a sponge filter that quickly cleans the pond.

Watch the video about the device and the operation of the internal filter.

  1. Malicious bacteria in an aquarium can also be causes of turbidity. When the water becomes green, then it's time to draw conclusions - this is an unnatural color. Muddy and green water is formed due to overcrowding of the aquarium with fish or plants. That is, the aquarium fluid passes through the filter, but is not cleaned. The abundance of metabolic products provokes the formation of putrefactive microorganisms, ciliates and other unicellular. If ciliates are beneficial, the bacteria can harm the plants - they will start to rot. In order not to be surprised why fish and plants often get sick - watch the aquarium clean and tidy.

  1. Why still breed single-celled? Because you do not have time to clean the tank after heavy feeding. For aquarism it is better to underfeed than to feed. This rule will protect the fish from problems. After overfeeding again the water got cloudy - what to do? Arrange a pet unloading diet for a couple of days, the bacteria will die out, the water biobalance will be restored.

  1. Incorrectly installed decoration. Snags, plastic materials of poor quality dissolve in water, forming a muddy shade. If the scenery is new wooden, but untreated - they can be boiled or infused in salt solution. Plastic snags should be replaced by new ones.
  2. In the old, stagnant nursery with fish sediment is formed due to "whiteness after fish treatment", this is when drugs and purification chemistry for aquarium glass were used in the pond. Such substances have a number of side effects, they disrupt the biological equilibrium, neutralizing the favorable microflora.

How to overcome turbidity in water?

Now we know the reasons why the water grows cloudy in the aquarium, and what to do in each case. However, there are general rules, without which it is impossible to completely eliminate the problem.

  1. Siphonte the soil in the aquarium. Open the filter, rinse and clean. Then add activated carbon to it - this needs to be done to absorb harmful substances. It is forbidden to make a complete replacement of water and washing the aquarium soil, otherwise the beneficial bacteria will die out and will not be able to process rot and algae.

See how to siphon the soil in the aquarium.

  1. In some cases, it is necessary to do an intensive aeration of the aquarium - when there are a lot of fish feed residues and a fasting day is not enough. Oxygen will quickly remove excess organics.
  2. If an unpleasant smell disappears in an aquarium, it means that the struggle with mist is over successfully. Also for elimination of bacterial turbidity it is possible to use elodeya, having landed it superficially in a ground.

Dregs in the water: types

The color of turbidity will tell about the sources of its formation:

  • The water color is greenish - single-celled algae reproduce;
  • Brown water - peat, humic and tannins, poorly processed snags;
  • Milky white color - unicellular bacteria begin to multiply;
  • The color of the water coincides with the color of the soil or of a stone recently laid on it, which means that the soil was plowed by fish, or the stone turned out to be fragile.

Drugs that prevent the appearance of turbid sediment

  1. Aquarium coal is absorbent, which is added after cleaning the tank to the filter for a period of 2 weeks. After extraction, you can fill in a new batch there.

  1. Tetra Aqua CrystalWater is a tool that binds small particles of dirt into one, after which they can be removed or passed through a filter. After 8-12 hours the reservoir will be crystal clear. Dosage - 100 ml per 200 liters of water.
  2. Sera Aquaria Clear - also binds sediment particles, passing it through the filter. During the day, dirt can be removed from the cassette. The drug does not contain harmful substances.
  • Before adding sorbents to water, it is better to move the fish to another container.

Conclusion

In order to avoid turbid water, it is necessary to control the level of nitrates, nitrites and ammonia. They stand out as a result of the vital activity of fish, plants and improper care of the water body. Therefore, fish should be settled in the tank, the size of which corresponds to its volume. Proper feeding of pets, timely cleaning of the products of their vital activity, removal of rotten plants will settle the water balance. If there is no mechanical or biological filter in the aquarium, replace 30% of the water weekly with fresh and sedimented. Do not add water from the pipeline with the smell of chlorine or boiled.

The film on the water in the aquarium

Nastya Rudenko

insufficiently intensive mixing of water and, as a result, stagnation of the surface layers;
Aquarium water contains a lot of organic substances, which are food for saprophytic bacteria, of which this film mainly consists;
due to the use of fatty feeds, a thin film of fat on the water serves as a seed for the development of a bacterial film;
a film on water can be a collection of microscopic algae.
There is one more reason, in our time, quite exotic, it is the use in the aquarium of low-quality equipment and decorations that release substances into the aquarium that collect on the surface of the water. In this case, the film turns oily with iridescent divorces. To eliminate such a film, it is necessary to identify the "culprit" of pollution of aquarium waters and remove it. But no matter how this film looks like a film on water, the methods of dealing with it are simple and universal:
Creation of surface flow with the help of special nozzles for a filter or a pump for acceleration or the use of internal filter skimmers (photo 3);
The correct selection of food for fish, namely, the refusal of flaky food and the transition to feeding the pellets of a suitable caliber, so that the food particles are not too large and the fish can easily swallow them and at the same time not too small so that they do not fly out through the gills and to pick them did not take too much time. If natural frozen food is used, they should not release too many “juices” into the water and again be proportioned to the fish. For example, it is not necessary to feed the astronotus with daphnia or small bloodworm, but a large river bloodworm or chopstick pellets are quite suitable;
The use of labor of snails ampulyary, very willingly collecting surface film in the aquarium and viviparous fish (plazily, guppy, mollies). These measures of biological control of a film on water in an aquarium are suitable when active mixing of water is undesirable.

In the aquarium with a turtle on the surface of the water film ...

Pauline

Three types of film can form on the surface of the water:
1) oily - the result of not dried putty on linseed or varnish;
2) gelatinous, resulting from the painting of racks and carcasses with nitro-painting, usually in non-windable aquariums;
3) colonies of unicellular and bacteria on the surface of the water.
In poorly closed aquariums, as well as over-feeding of fish, a colloidal bacterial film of grayish-white color is often formed. If this is the reason, then change the water.
If the film is of bacterial origin and is formed when there is insufficient water circulation, it is necessary to supply the aquarium with a sufficiently powerful water or air pump that provides water flow, then the risk of formation of such a film will be significantly reduced. In addition, the elimination of the film contributes to increased lighting and the regularity of hygienic measures (cleaning the soil, changing water, etc.), reducing the concentration of organic matter in the water.
The film is easy to remove by gently placing a sheet of paper on the surface of the water and slowly pulling it along one edge. The operation is repeated several times. The film sticks to the paper and thus you can get rid of it.

Lady multik

take out the turtle. move it to another house. Pour the water from the aquarium, carefully collect the soil into an unnecessary pot or bowl, rinse it very well under water so that there is no dirt left, then pour water into this pan and boil the soil. deduct the aquarium to shine inside and also boil gently and then it will burst. rinse thoroughly under water, and put everything back in its place. If there are plants, then while you are busy with the ground and the aquarium, throw them into the manganese solution. By the way, the armor of a turtle and legs, too, can be wiped with manganese with a cotton swab and then wiped with water.

Why does a film form in the aquarium and what should it be removed from?

UMA NMA

Bacterial film is a sign of impaired bacterial balance in an aquarium. I would advise you to have more plants with smooth leaves and scavengers - snails and catfish to clean up everything that can rot. A film is better to remove the blotter or kitchen paper towel. I do not advise the newspaper - it contains lead (in printing ink), and it is harmful to fish.

Alla Grishanova

I used to have this (when the aquarium was a frame), I took a sheet of newspaper and superimposed it on the surface, and so on until it was done. But you know, after a while everything was repeated anew.

skokann

take a napkin or a piece of toilet paper. put it on the water. and then pick it up and throw it away. but in general ... I would have already bought a compressor for myself long ago (you will not be poorer. It costs 200 rubles to your bank). you spend more money on promakashki

There was a thin transparent film on the surface of the aquarium (explanation inside)

Tata

film film appears if the aquarium is not well covered from above. But it is impossible to close the aquarium very tightly - there must always be free access to the surface of the water, otherwise the fish in the aquarium will not have enough oxygen. And if you can not close the aquarium too tight cover glass, then, the danger of the appearance of such a film-raid always remains.
This oily film-bloom, formed from the smallest grains of sand, dust particles and droplets of liquids in the air tightly closes the water and does not allow air to the water - and oxygen from the air can not get into the water.
Film bloom must be removed. Make it easy. Take a sheet of blank paper and gently put it on the surface of the water, holding the edges. After the sheet of paper has settled down on the surface of the water, it is carefully lifted, the film sticks to the sheet of paper and is thus removed from the aquarium.
The remains of the film, which sometimes hang at the surface of the water with whitish flakes, are carefully collected with a net, trying not to tear these flakes and not to mix them with water.
The water in the aquarium all the time evaporates, the water level drops, and a white coating remains on the walls, which appear from the water. This so-called lime scale is formed from salts that have settled on the glass after the water has evaporated. It looks ugly, and it must be periodically deleted. Usually limescale is removed with a sponge, carefully passing it over the glass.
The water in the aquarium gradually evaporates, the level of it falls, which means that water has to be refilled all the time. In order to maintain a normal regime in the aquarium — normal conditions for the life of fish and plants — not only must be periodically replenished with water, but also replaced, that is, some old water is cast and replaced with new, settled water from the aqueduct. Usually weekly replace the fifth part of the water in the aquarium. This is done in order to maintain a constant water hardness.
