Methylene blue for aquarium

Methylene Blue for aquarium

Despite the emergence of new drugs for the treatment of fish diseases and the creation of optimal conditions in the aquarium, some time-tested tools have not lost their relevance. One of them is methylene blue.

Composition and scope

Methylene blue is a synthetic thiazine dye. The drug consists of dark blue crystals that dissolve well in the water of the aquarium. Due to its fungicidal and bactericidal properties, the methylene blue solution is widely used for:

  1. Treatment of fungal diseases - Branchomycosis and dermatomycosis (gill rot).
  2. Normalization of the process of incubation of eggs, as well as the prevention of mycoses of eggs.
  3. Treatments for diseases of fish triggered by protozoan parasites - hillodonellas, ichthyophthiriuses, bones, etc.
  4. Prevention of stress and normalization of breathing, possible during transportation or transplant of fish from the aquarium.
  5. Treatment of blood diseases in fish poisoning with nitrates or cyanides.

Drug deficiencies

Along with significant advantages, methylene blue has several significant disadvantages. The main ones are:

  • Violation of biological filtration.
  • Negative effect on plant growth.
  • Blue staining of everything with which a solution of methylene blue comes into contact, starting from the skin of the hands and ending with gravel and stones.

Despite these drawbacks, blue remains one of the safest and most effective means to care for fish.. And to eliminate the negative effects of the drug on the microflora and the appearance of the aquarium can be, if the procedure is not carried out in itself, but in a separate container.

Application features

When using the drug is important to determine the desired dosage. As a rule, a 1% solution is used, that is, 10 g of a substance dissolves in a liter of water. The resulting composition is used in this ratio: 3 ml per 10 liters of water, or 0.3 ml of solution per 1 liter.

There are already diluted drugs on sale. Usually a standard 50 ml bottle contains 0.3 g of methylene blue. It is designed for a capacity of 100 liters. That is, for every liter of water 1/10 of a bottle should be used, or 0.5 ml.

Application in the general aquarium

A solution of methylene blue in the total capacity is used in the following sequence:

  1. The required amount of the drug is measured and dissolved in 200-250 ml of water in a separate glass container.
  2. 1/3 of the diluted solution is poured into the aquarium and mixed thoroughly.
  3. After 20-30 minutes (after complete dissolution of the first part) half of the remaining composition is applied, after half an hour - the remainder.

For thorough mixing of the solution, you can use an aeration unit. But the biofilter (if available) for the period of treatment of fish from the aquarium is better to remove. This is due to the fact that methylene blue suppresses nitrification caused by beneficial bacteria.

The general course of treatment is 1 month. After its expiration, it is recommended to use an activated carbon filter to get rid of blue paint.

Application in a separate container

For the treatment of fish in a separate vessel, you must:

  1. Dilute 25 ml of the prepared composition in 10 l of distilled clean water.
  2. Remove sick fish from the aquarium and run into the healing water for half an hour.
  3. If necessary, repeat bathing in 2-3 days.

Important: when preparing a therapeutic solution, you should observe safety measures - wear a respirator and medical gloves.

Methylene blue - how to use in an aquarium

Methylene blue is a multifunctional formula that is used by people in different fields of activity. This composition is used as a dye for cotton, but it is quite unstable when exposed to sunlight.

Analytical chemistry needs it as a determinant of a number of substances. Aquaria consumes the composition as an antiseptic for caviar breeding, and water purification to check the quality of activated carbon.

The most common use of this remedy is still in medicine. It is used in case of poisoning. Its high effectiveness in the fight against Alzheimer's disease has also been proven.

Drug pharmacology

The formula in practice gives a disinfecting effect. Also, the drug is involved in the redox process and supplies hydrogen ions. These properties allow it to be effective during the treatment of poisoning.

This composition is poorly soluble in alcohol and hardly soluble in water (only with a balance of 1 to 30). Methylene blue itself is green crystals, but when combined with water, the solution becomes saturated blue.

In what form is the drug produced?

In total there are two types in which the product is sold:

  • dark green powder;
  • crystal dark green color.

Also, Methylene Blue has several other names that designate the same formula: Methylthionium chloride, methylene blue.

Aquarium fish, although very calm and quiet creatures, however, they, like other pets, also require special care. For them, you need to buy special food, monitor the maintenance of the required water temperature, provide air access and good lighting. Special attention should be paid to water quality. In the dirty water the fish can not be long and die. To clean the aquarium environment helps sanitary air conditioner with the name "Methylene Blue".

Properties of the air conditioner

The main advantage of methylene blue is the use of natural (organic) dyes in its composition. The tool has a number of useful properties for aquarium fish:

  • antiparasitic - with its help it is possible to effectively overcome fungi and protozoan parasites on the body of creatures and in water.
  • donor-acceptor - provides good tissue respiration of fish.

Means can be added to feed. Thus its soft action is provided. The solution does not harm the process of incubation of caviar, but rather contributes to it.

It is advisable to use the drug if you need to disinfect the aquarium water and deprive the environment of such parasites as chilodonellas, ichthyophthiriuses, as well as Ahli and saprolegnia fungi.

With the help of Methylene Blue you can improve the tissue respiration of fish and after oxygen deprivation, for example, when fish are transported for a long time.

Instructions for people: the use of the composition

Methylene blue solution must be applied strictly according to the instructions. For external use, a solution of powder with alcohol is taken with a ratio of 1 to 100 or 3 to 100, respectively. During the work it is necessary to wet the bandage or cotton wool in the solution and wipe the necessary places. The surrounding tissue is also treated with healthy tissue.

A very weak aqueous solution of methylene blue (1 to 5000) is used internally with water. For adults, methylene blue should be consumed in an amount of 0.1 grams per day in three or four doses. Children need to break the reception on the same number of times, but reduce the amount of the substance according to age.

Before you give the drug to a child under 5 years of age, be sure to consult with your doctor and clearly determine the causes of the formation of the disease.

It is strictly forbidden to use this drug when an excessive concentration of nitrogenous compounds is found in the water.

Adverse reactions

Water after using the product can change its appearance - to become light blue, however, it doesn’t interfere with the fish itself.

Instruction: dosage

In a freshwater aquarium, you can add 20 drops (this is about 1 ml) to 50 liters of water. However, you can not just drop the required dose of the drug into the aquarium. For a start, it can be mixed with a small amount of water, for example, take 100-200 ml. Mix thoroughly, this solution can be poured into the aquarium in small portions. 5 days after disinfection, half of the water needs to be changed.

To completely remove the tool from the aquarium, it is advisable to use activated charcoal.

For the treatment of marine fish, they must first be placed in a separate container. The concentration of “methylene blue” for cold-blooded should be as follows: 1 ml. funds for 10 liters of water. Fish in such an environment should stay for about 3 hours.

Features of use

During disinfection “Methylene Blue” biofilters and activated carbon should be removed from the tank.

Methylene blue as a universal remedy

Methylene blue was first discovered in the 19th century. Small dark green crystals with a distinct gleam of bronze were initially only used in the printing industry. With the help of green powder it was possible to give a pleasant bluish tint to an ordinary sheet of paper. It was interesting, quite new and relevant at that time. But the years went by, and scientists found all new fields of application for an unusual substance.

Having carefully studied the effect of methylene blue on various organic and inorganic compounds, experts determined that this new drug has the strongest antibacterial action. Doctors have adopted it for the treatment of various ailments. Antiseptic properties of the drug allowed to use it as a disinfectant. They are well treated oral cavity with stomatitis, lubricate burns, as well as skin areas affected by various purulent infections. The tool can stop the development of a dangerous inflammatory process and help the body to overcome the disease.

But the possibilities of the drug are not limited to this. In addition to the treatment of skin problems, it can neutralize the action of some toxic substances. It is used for poisoning with nitrates, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide and various cyanides. The tool can neutralize the poison, which contains any derivatives of these substances.

In medicine, methylene blue is often used: an aqueous solution is for oral administration, and for external treatment they take a 1% solution of alcohol-based powder. Unlike the crystals themselves, it has a pronounced blue color.

Apply the product with a cotton swab, gently treating gradually the affected areas, and then the adjacent part of the skin. After applying the substance is difficult to wash off the skin. Everything that comes into contact with it turns blue. Yes, it does not matter. After all, only sick people use the drug, and during the illness a person does not think about appearance. All his thoughts and desires are associated only with recovery. For the use of the drug "Methylene Blue" the instruction is given by the attending physician. It should be strictly adhered to in order to avoid undesirable consequences.

In addition to therapeutic purposes, in medicine, methylene blue is used for clarity in the diagnosis of certain diseases. After applying the inside, it stains the urine blue. This makes it possible to trace the movement of fluid in the body and to conclude how well the kidneys perform the function assigned to them.

But not only medicine uses the magical properties of this drug. Aquarists know well how methylene blue can help to cure sick fish. Often parasites causing fungal diseases take root on their bodies or fins. If you hold such fish for a while in a special solution, you will again be able to see your pets beautiful, cheerful and cheerful.

These are only those abilities and fields of application of methylene blue that are known to us. But science does not stand still. Perhaps scientists will soon discover some new properties of this chemical.

Why add metehleny blue to aquariums?

METHYLENE BLUE (MS) - sanitary conditioner for aquarium water. Designed to care for freshwater and saltwater aquariums.
It is used to impart aquarium water properties that prevent the reproduction of ichthyophthirius, chilodonellas, trichodins, bones, aeromonads, pseudomonads, myxobacteria; for the normalization of oxygen metabolism in fish tissues after transportation; for processing caviar and fry, as well as for the preparation of anti-bacterial feed.
In a freshwater aquarium make Methylene blue at the rate of 1 ml (20 drops) to 50 liters of water (1 drop to 2.5 liters of water). For this: the required amount of MS is pre-dissolved in 100-200 ml of water, and then the resulting solution is poured into the aquarium in small portions, stirring. After 5 days, replace half the water in the aquarium. If necessary, re-make a full dose of the drug and keep the fish in this solution for another 5 days. At the end of the treatment, filters with activated carbon are used to clarify the water or it is partially replaced.
Caviar treatment: Caviar is placed for 2-3 hours in a solution of Methylene blue of the above concentration (1 ml per 50 l of water). Carefully, caviar of some species of fish is extremely sensitive to any manipulations with it.
Normalization of tissue respiration in fish: MS is applied for 5 days at a dose of 1 ml per 75 liters of water.
Processing of marine fish: Methylene blue - 1 ml per 10 liters of water is added to the tank with aquarium water, mixed thoroughly, then fish is placed there and kept for 3 hours. This treatment is done every other day five times.
Preparation of antibacterial feed: One teaspoon of granulated feed (2-4 g) is mixed with 2-4 drops of 1: 2 diluted with methylene blue water (1 part of the MC to 2 parts of water), mixed thoroughly and dried in air at room temperature. Feed the fish as usual feed for 10 days.
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS. Water after adding MC gets blue color.
At the time of processing from the aquarium should remove the biofilter and filter with activated carbon.
Methylene blue does not clog up mechanical filters, since in the production process it undergoes a special technological treatment.
MS can have a negative effect on some invertebrates. It is recommended to remove them from the aquarium during processing.
Methylene blue should not be used with an increased concentration of nitrogenous compounds in water.
Means does not contain impurities harmful to fish.
To STORE in dry, inaccessible for children and pets, place at a temperature above 0оС.

Methylene blue for fish

Revenge is?

If it is such a Methylene Blue, then you are doing everything right. There is one BUT (from my experience). For particularly sensitive and problem fish I use it in a quarantine tank as described below.
MS solutions are used to get rid of fungal infections in domestic aquariums, causing, in particular, diseases of aquarium fish, such as rhythmic mycosis and branchiomycosis (gill rot). This conditioner will also be useful for the prevention of stress arising from the transport or transplant of fish.
Since the preparation is safe for caviar and fry, it can be used for the prevention of mycoses of caviar, moreover, it is recommended as a substitute for malachite green in the treatment of particularly sensitive fish.
From the instructions to the drug:
One vial (50 ml of solution) contains 0.3 g of methylene blue. This amount is calculated for use in the general aquarium with a volume of water of 100 liters, that is, 5 ml of this solution for every 10 liters of aquarium water. As a measuring container, you can use a vial cap that holds approximately 5 ml of solution.
A certain amount of conditioner, strictly calculated for the entire volume of water in the aquarium, is diluted with fresh distilled water in a glass container with a capacity of 200-250 ml. Then this solution is gradually distributed in equal portions in three steps at intervals of 20-30 minutes into the aquarium, while gently stirring the water. For faster and more uniform mixing, it is convenient to use an aeration unit. Pour into the aquarium at once the entire solution is unacceptable. If necessary, the procedure can be repeated a week later, replacing 1/3 of the volume of water in the aquarium beforehand. The healing process can take up to one month. It should be borne in mind that methylene blue completely suppresses nitrification, which is carried out in the aquarium with useful nitrifying bacteria. Therefore, for the period of treatment of fish from the aquarium should be removed biofilter.
Activated carbon filters are used to release water from the bright blue color at the end of the treatment course.
This treatment is effective against ectoparasites. Not recommended for sensitive fish.
In a quarantine aquarium, prepare a solution: 25 ml of conditioner per 10 liters of distilled water and place sick fish in it. Processing time is 30 minutes. If necessary, this procedure can be repeated in 2-3 days.

Is it possible to drip methylene blue into a common aquarium with a filter?

It is better, of course, to plant the fish in another aquarium or jar and add methylene to it. Methylene blue is a thiazine dye with a bactericidal and fungicidal action. To use methylene in a running aquarium as an antidote of nitrites, to put it mildly, would not be too reasonable. In such cases, the poisoned fish is treated in a separate container, without interfering with the launch. There are other means besides him. It would be better to replace it with something else. Base solution = 1g. per 100 ml of water. Add a disposable syringe to the aquarium at the rate of 1 ml / one cube / per 50 liters of volume. If the volume of the aquarium is small, consider the proportion and add it to the insulin syringe. With experience you will make "by eye". Methylene blue, as well as malachite green oxalate, and copper sulphate pure for analysis, is available in Chemical retailers

Methylene blue is actually very good. useful thing. Drip in the general! !
Dosage, read the instructions. Different manufacturers have different concentrations.
I dripped guppies once every 2 weeks, prevention of fin rot and other bad things))
