How to prepare water for the aquarium at home

Preparation of water for an aquarium is a crucial task that requires certain knowledge and skills, especially for a novice aquarist. The state of physical well-being of plants, fish and other animals living in water depends on the water used. Water properties are extremely important for creating a biological balance of a reservoir. To prepare water at home, you need to study the properties of water in order to properly adjust its parameters. In high-quality aquatic environment pets will live comfortably.

How to prepare the water?

Freshly tap water is not suitable for animal settlement. Reptiles, fish, amphibians and snails can adapt to it, but on condition that it infuses for several days. Fresh, domestic water from the tap will destroy animals, because chlorine compounds are toxic to the sensitive organism of small creatures. On certain days, tap water contains different amounts of volatile substances, experts recommend turning on a shower and checking the steam and the presence of chlorine to check. If the smell is harsh, water should not be collected on this day.

Regardless of the season, weather and air temperature, domestic water will be different. Be observant if you want to settle the animals in clean water from impurities. Infused tap water is recommended for many pets and plants, it has an acceptable level of acidity: pH 7.0. It forms an active reaction, creating an alkaline and acidic aqueous medium. The reaction is determined using litmus paper, which is sold in pet stores. Infusing water should not be in plastic containers; it is better to use glass jars with the lid open. The main thing is that in the prepared water, while it insists, do not get dust and insects.

See how to test the water.

You can use baking soda to raise the pH to the required level. Peat is recommended to lower the pH. Sometimes before the launch of a new aquarium in the water put samples of trees, reducing the acidity of water. The aquarium can be filled not only with tap water, but also distilled water, which is sold in pharmacies or in auto shops. It is filled with small aquariums, but with an experienced razvodchiki warned that such water is poor in the mineral components necessary for animals. Rarely use a liquid from another aquarium, in which there is a stable biological equilibrium for normal life.

On the temperature of the aquarium water

As you know, all the fish and not only breed at a certain temperature of the aquatic environment. Heat mimics the rainy season, climate change, and the time of year, serves as a signal for finding a pair and spawning. All types of fish, snails, amphibians and reptiles live in different water temperatures. Also, residents of home nurseries are divided into two types - cold-loving and heat-loving. Heat-loving - those who live at a temperature not lower than 18-20 degrees Celsius, while cold-loving people are able to live in cool water (14-18 degrees and lower). The latter live only in spacious reservoirs, where there is a slow and cool undercurrent. Heat-loving species in cold water behave sluggishly, motionless, begin to ache.

Starting the preparation of water for the aquarium, consult with experts, or ask for help from the specialist literature. For each pet requires optimal water temperature, so only compatible animals need to settle in one tank with identical parameters (heat-loving animals are not settled with cold-loving animals, herbivores and predators are kept in separate nurseries, large and small are settled separately). In accordance with all parameters (permissible threshold of temperature, acidity, hardness), the acquired living creatures inhabit the aquarium. You should also take into account the conditions of the content of plants in the water, they are important specified parameters of the aquatic environment. Comfortable neighborhood will provide proper care and living conditions.

How to prepare water with permissible hardness?

Reduce stiffness by filtering and infusing. Sometimes, infused water (time - 2 days) from the tap add distilled, thawed or rain water. Plants such as roach and elodiea, reduce stiffness. There is another way - freezing. The collected water is frozen, and then thawed, defended and poured into the tank.

Increases the rigidity of the aquarium water by adding brine, pieces of chalk or limestone, coral chips to it. Coral crumb is recommended to boil (2 hours) to soften and prevent parasites. Only after all the procedures it is lowered into the tank.

It is better to run the fish in a day or two, until the water has acquired the necessary parameters. The temperature of the water in which the purchased fish, animals and plants lived should be identical to the aquarium. Again, use a thermometer, litmus paper to test. Do not neglect the recommendations that the life of pets was healthy and safe, because when kept in poor-quality aquatic environment, they may suffer.

How to prepare the water for the aquarium - a full description.

Why do you need to defend the water?

The main reason for this is harmful impurities that can harm the inhabitants of our aquarium. After settling, solids sometimes appear in the sediment. Initially clear water after a while can grow turbid.

Many aquarists leave the water for substitution to breathe for a few days, and so that all harmful suspensions evaporate for a week. This assumption is partly true, but it cannot guarantee the quality of the prepared water.

Before we do something, we always know why we need to do it. By keeping tap water outside the pipeline, we are trying to improve its performance so that it does not harm our fish. In other words, when defending water, we get rid of most of the malicious components.

Conditionally harmful substances in the water can be divided into:

  • solid (precipitates to the bottom);
  • gaseous (volatilized from water to the environment);
  • liquid (initially dissolved and remaining in water).

The process of settling can affect only solid and gaseous mixtures, and it does not affect liquid substances in any way.

What should be the temperature of the water in the aquarium?

Water temperature for the aquarium plays a crucial role. It depends on the health and ability of fish to breed. For each species of fish, a completely different water temperature is suitable. Conventionally, all the inhabitants of the aquarium can be divided into heat-loving and cold-loving.

By heat-loving include fish living in the water, the temperature of which is not below 18 degrees. Cold fishes are individuals that easily adapt to low temperatures. They can safely live in the aquarium, the temperature in which, will not exceed 14 degrees. The maintenance of cold-loving fish is possible only in large and spacious aquariums.

It is noteworthy that if the heat-loving fish are planted in cold water, then they practically stop swimming. This suggests that significant damage has been done to their health. Preparing water for the aquarium, you should use the tips for beginners, which can be found in the special literature. So, it is possible to choose the optimum temperature for water only after it becomes known exactly which species of fish will live in it.

The thing is that in the literature for each type of fish is given the permissible threshold of the highest and lowest temperatures at which the fish will feel comfortable. In accordance with these parameters, you can choose the future inhabitants of the aquarium so that they all feel comfortable in the same temperature conditions. This will avoid a huge number of problems associated with the maintenance and care of the fish.

How much to defend the water for the aquarium?

To finally get rid of all the harmful substances contained in the water, it must be defended for 1-2 weeks. For the backlog of water is better to use a large bucket or basin. Also, when buying a new aquarium, leave water in it and drain it at least once. At the same time, this way you can check if the aquarium is leaking. Some pet stores sell special products that neutralize chemical compounds in water. But experts recommend not to neglect the settling of water, even using these drugs.

Is there a need for water settling?

In order for the tap water to be normalized for replacement in an aquarium, it is necessary to remove from it all the harmful components - solid, gaseous and liquid.

Today, upholding is very rarely relevant. Solid components in the water supply system have isolated cases, chlorine water derivatives must be removed by air conditioning (chlorine gas is also removed), and liquid ones - only by special air conditioning. Polluted water settles for several hours, and with strong aeration much faster.

From all of the above, it is clear that it is best to use special additives for water. Settling water does not completely remove harmful substances, and in some cases it may even be harmful (a dusty film appears, stuffiness, etc.).

From personal experience:

  • I collect the necessary amount of water for the substitution;
  • add air conditioning according to the instructions;
  • perform aeration for 15 minutes;
  • I bring the temperature of fresh water (with air conditioning) into accord with the aquarium one;
  • I fill, and that's it.

The advantages of this method of water preparation: all harmful substances are removed, no need to wait until the water settles, the pots do not harm the interior of the room.

What does water temperature affect?

Aquarium water that has a certain temperature can stimulate spawning. This applies to elevated water temperatures. However, this is not always useful for fish. So, the fish that spawn, you should not constantly keep in such conditions. Otherwise, to get offspring from them in the future will be simply impossible. Thus, when harvesting water for an aquarium, it is better to ensure that it is one degree below the norm.

Gaseous constituents of water

This type of substance evaporates through the surface of the water. Here one can consider the quantitative and qualitative compositions of dissolved gases in water. Gaseous substances in natural water enter into chemical reactions with other dissolved elements, due to diffusion they constantly circulate through the water mirror and are harmless and harmless to fish.

The method of water disinfection for your area can be found in the local water utility, this information will not be superfluous. At new water treatment plants, ozone and ultraviolet cleaning is applied, and such water can be added without fear (it is pointless to defend against oxygen and photons).

The outdated chlorine cleaning method is gradually becoming a thing of the past, but is still in use. Chlorine and its derivatives are poisons. They allow the destruction of both harmful bacteria and beneficial ones, as well as depending on the concentration of large animals and even humans.

Method of elimination of gaseous chlorine from water

Unpleasant smell of chlorine coming from freshly poured water, everyone knows. Water, being in a cup, ceases to smell after a while, and this means that chlorine molecules have evaporated.

If the fish are placed in newly recruited chlorinated water, they will die from body burns and gill petals.

Having made some observations on settling, it can be seen that chlorine evaporates quite quickly. It is not necessary to stand for water from the tap for more than a day, since the residual chlorine cannot affect the health of the fish.

The important point is the choice of dishes. The greater the area of contact of water with the environment, the faster the gas exchange occurs, and chlorine disappears. From this it follows that when settling water in a large-diameter basin, it will become suitable for an aquarium much faster than using a plastic bottle.

It is impossible to cover the used dishes with a lid and even more so to twist the bottle, since there will be no place for volatilization of gas impurities, and the water which was chlorinated will remain so.

Ozone and its effect on fish

With ozone, things are somewhat different. It does not have a pronounced smell, although it carries freshness. Under natural conditions, we feel it during a thunderstorm, during the operation of air conditioners (ozonizing) and laser printers. Before water is supplied to the drinking pipeline, the process of its ozonization takes place, the ozone molecules are unstable and quickly pass into a stable compound - oxygen. Well, oxygen is not dangerous to fish.

What is pH and hardness?

pH is a pH indicator of the acidic environment. A pH of 7 is considered neutral because it is more favorable for most aquarium dwellers. In the case when it is less than 7, the water is alkaline. In order to easily determine the pH of water, it is necessary to purchase litmus papers with a color table, or specialized aquarium tests.

The second parameter of water is hardness. It is divided into temporary and permanent. Water hardness may also affect aquarium inhabitants.
In order to avoid unpleasant consequences, aquarium water should also be checked for permanent and temporary rigidity. It is measured in degrees and is calculated by adding the temporal and constant rigidity.

In the case when spawning of a certain type of fish is necessary, for example, such as neons, in which caviar can survive only in very soft water, water with low hardness content is used. However, for most avkarium fish species, water with a hardness content of less than 5 is not suitable for life and breeding. At the same time, too high water hardness, such as 25 degrees and above, is also destructive for most aquarium species. Of course, there are exceptions.

Water for aquarium

Water is the source of life and habitat of all marine and freshwater creatures. Under natural conditions, animals feel comfortable mostly in clean water. In such water, they can grow and multiply. At home, everything is different. Many people prefer to start aquarium fish, but not all care about the proper quality of water for the aquarium. The use of ordinary tap water can be detrimental to its inhabitants. Therefore, there are several simple rules for preparing water for an aquarium.

What kind of water to pour into the aquarium?

Fish and other inhabitants of the aquarium should not be run in fresh water. It is fraught with diseases in animals. Various chemical compounds that are in the usual for us water, are detrimental to the inhabitants of the aquarium. Chlorine is especially dangerous. Water, without fail, must be separated.

Aquarium water temperature

The most suitable temperature for aquarium water is room - 23-26 degrees. In winter, the aquarium should not be carried out on the balcony, nor is it recommended to place it near the radiator or heater.

Water hardness in the aquarium

Stiffness is an important parameter of water in an aquarium. This parameter is determined by the total amount of calcium and magnesium salts that are dissolved in water. The range of water hardness is very wide. Under natural conditions, this indicator depends on climate, soil and season. Fish can live in water of different hardness, but they are extremely necessary for magnesium and calcium salts - they play an important role in the growth and reproduction of animals.

In an aquarium, the hardness of the water is constantly changing, it becomes softer - the fish digest the salts that are in the water. Therefore, the water in the aquarium should be periodically changed.

Aquarium water purification

The easiest way to clean is a complete change of water in the aquarium. But in some cases this task is difficult and unnecessary. Water is much easier to clean. As a rule, simple filters based on activated carbon are used to purify turbid water in an aquarium. Water filters in the aquarium can be made independently or purchased at a pet store.

Aeration of water in the aquarium

This parameter is regulated by temperature, plants and the presence of living things in the aquarium. By aeration, oxygen is monitored in the aquarium. Aeration can be performed using special devices - compressors that saturate water with oxygen. Also, there are filters for water treatment with built-in compressors. Water parameters in the aquarium play an important role in the normal functioning of fish. It is important that any of the parameters be changed very smoothly, excluding sudden temperature fluctuations.

By following these simple rules, each owner of the aquarium provides fish with conditions as close as possible to the natural ones. And this, in turn, is the key to the health and long life of pets.

What kind of water to pour into the aquarium for fish

Water is required for marine and freshwater fish. Under natural conditions, the main requirement is purity, because harmful impurities do not allow the inhabitants to successfully multiply and develop. However, how is the situation at home? In fact, the question “what kind of water to pour into the aquarium” is really important, because you need to remember the quality of aquarium water. For example, if you use untreated water taken from the tap, pets will have to face serious harm. For this reason, you need to remember useful recommendations.

What water is required for an aquarium?

The most important rule is the lack of fresh water. Otherwise it will be extremely difficult for aquarium inhabitants to exist in their house.

At the same time, one should not allow the presence of chemical compounds that prove to be destructive. The greatest risk is chlorine. Given this aspect, water is best defended.

The optimal duration of water settling

It takes from one to two weeks of preparation to eliminate harmful substances. It is advisable to use for settling a bucket or basin of large size.

When buying an aquarium, it is recommended to treat the water in a new house for fish. In addition, a similar move will allow you to check whether the design is complete.

If necessary, you can buy special drugs that can neutralize chemicals in the water. Professionals recommend to defend water from the tap, even if such drugs are used.

Optimum characteristics of aquarium water

In the aquarium is best to pour, trying to achieve certain indicators.

  1. Room temperature is the best option for aquarium residents. For this reason, a decent indicator is from +23 to +26 degrees. For this reason, in the cold season it is undesirable to take the aquarium to the balcony or put a house for fish next to a heater or a radiator.
  2. Water hardness largely determines the life expectancy of aquarium dwellers. Taking into account this nuance, it is desirable to control the composition of the water used. Calcium, magnesium always lead to increased rigidity. The range of hardness pleases with its variety. Fish can live in water of any hardness, but at the same time magnesium and calcium become useful only with certain quantitative indicators. In the aquarium, you can allow the fact that the hardness will change on an ongoing basis, because the inhabitants will absorb the salt. Taking into account the regular changes of an important indicator, it is recommended to update the water in the aquarium.
  3. Water purification involves a complete change of water in the aquarium. However, this task is not always necessary. Modern technologies allow the use of special filters for cleaning, operating on activated carbon.

Aeration of water in the aquarium

This parameter depends on the temperature, plants and fish. Aeration allows you to control oxygen in the house of marine or freshwater inhabitants who fall into the conditions of the apartment. Manufacturers offer special devices, pleasing efficiency with respect to the flow of oxygen into the aquarium.

In addition, cleaning filters with pre-installed compressors can be used. Being engaged in the full control of water, there is an opportunity to guarantee the successful livelihoods of fish. Without fail, any indicator related to water should change gradually and without abrupt changes. Responsible approach and taking into account the numerous nuances allows you to bring the conditions in the aquarium to the natural environment.

What water is suitable for an aquarium?

Is it possible to use ordinary tap water? What water should be used for the aquarium, taking care of the fish?

  1. It is best to use soft water with neutral indicators. Such water flows in water pipes, but it should not be connected to artesian wells. To mitigate it is recommended to use distilled or rainy water, as well as melt water.
  2. Plain tap water cannot be used. It is imperative to defend typed liquid, eliminating it from excess gases.
  3. Chlorine treatment in the aquarium is a mandatory requirement. If the chlorine index exceeds 0.1 milligram, the larvae and young fish will die in a couple of hours, 0.05 milligram will be dangerous for fish eggs.
  4. The pH level should be monitored with increased responsibility. To achieve optimal performance, air blowing and batch delivery of the liquid to the house for fish is recommended. The minimum pH should be 7 units.

Features aquarium water change

Each owner of the aquarium understands the need to change the water in the house for fish.

Old water should be drained from the aquarium using a hose. It is recommended to use a tank located below the main aquarium. It is best to place the fish and snails in the bottle for a while, where the separated water will be.

During the event it is advisable to wash the aquarium algae using cold water. Some plants will have to throw out, causing such an act adverse changes in the state.

Decorative details, including pebbles and shells, aquarium sculptures, you need to rinse with hot water from a tap, but the cleaning products can not be used. If necessary, pebbles are allowed to process boiled water.

To remove dirt from aquarium glasses, a special brush is traditionally used.

After a similar procedure, shells and stones can be placed in the aquarium. The next step is to plant algae. After this, you can fill the aquarium with water, but you should not overdo it with the thickness of the stream. After the new water is added, it is recommended to install aquarium equipment to monitor the life of the inhabitants. It is recommended to run the fish only after all the procedures have been successfully carried out.

How often should water be replaced? Partial volume is recommended for weekly execution, because the water can evaporate. For this reason, once a week it is best to add water to the aquarium. Full cleaning should be done once a month. If the fish died due to substandard water from the tap or other adverse factors, it is advisable to replace the aquarium water, thereby securing other marine or freshwater inhabitants.

Full control over the living conditions of the aquarium dwellers guarantees the opportunity to enjoy beautiful and healthy fish.

Preparing an aquarium for fish

Proper preparation of the aquarium will help to avoid many problems associated with fish farming. That is why you should take this issue seriously. Preparation of an aquarium for fish takes place in several stages.

Preparing to start the aquarium

Aquarium should be thoroughly washed with baking soda before settling. Do not use soap and various synthetic detergents, since the remnants of these substances can remain in the putty and the seams of the aquarium for quite a long time. Subsequently, they will be released into the water and may cause the death of the inhabitants of the aquarium.

Plants

If you decide to aerate your aquarium and feed the herbivorous fish with vegetable food, you can get by with artificial plants, which are needed only as decorations. Artificial plants need to be fixed a little in the ground so that they do not emerge.

If you decide to plant live plants, then you need to follow these guidelines. Keep the distance between the plants so that they are not crowded. Plant roots should be washed with water. Large plants are placed in the background.

Water

After planting the plants and installing the decorations and shelters, the aquarium is filled with water. Tap water can be used, but before use it should be protected from chlorine for three days.

Before pouring water, make sure that all the equipment is fixed and that everything is done correctly.

In order to prevent the jet of water from washing out the soil, when you pour it, you can put a small saucer and pour water on it. After the aquarium is full, the saucer can be removed. If the composition of the water requires adjustment with various additives, do it. At first, the water may become slightly cloudy after the equilibrium of the medium in the aquarium is established, the water will again become transparent.

Lighting and heating

After filling the water, heat-loving plants and fish need to turn on the heating. Also turn on the lights. Check out the complete operation of the devices in the filled aquarium, it is better to do it now, while you have not yet populated the fish.

Electricity connection

The heater is set to the desired temperature, then turn on the filter. Make sure that water is drawn in and out. Next, you need to adjust the angle of discharge of water. After a day, check the temperature of the water, whether it is set on the thermostat. Check the operation of the filter.

After 10-14 days in the aquarium, you can run the fish. Water ages as a result of fish life in a few weeks. Therefore, every week should be replaced 1/5 of the water with new water.

Do not completely change the water in the aquarium. Even if you spent a general cleaning in the aquarium, you should fill it with at least half of it with old water. Otherwise, you will have to wait again for 10-14 days before settling the fish.

If the preparation of the aquarium for launch is carried out correctly, the inhabitants of the aquarium will feel comfortable, grow and multiply. Well-organized lighting will emphasize the dignity and beauty of fish, plants and scenery.

How much and how to defend the water for the aquarium?

Why defend the water in the aquarium for fish, and how much benefit will this procedure bring? Such questions are often asked by novice home-water lovers and more experienced razvodchiki. In fact, settling is a necessary measure to prepare the aquarium for launch, because no matter how much you clean the scenery and glass of the tank, water is its main component, a living environment where both visible and microscopic creatures will live and develop. objects. Therefore, the process of settling involves the study of the rules for the preparation of different types of water.

How to prepare an aquarium with tap water

The easiest and cheapest way to stock up on water is to use tap water in the tank. It is available to almost everyone, suitable for any freshwater aquarium. For fish, it is not harmful if it is properly defended. If a quality water purifier from the tap is not installed in your home, you should not immediately pour the liquid that you have collected into the tank. Compounds of chlorine that are in the water need to be weathered for several days. Why do this? To protect the fish and plants from poisoning and premature death.

You can dial the water in glass jars directly from the tap, and leave it for 3-4 days, covered with gauze. All volatile compounds will evaporate and the liquid will become colorless and free from chemical compounds. It is necessary to check the collected water for smell and color. Chlorinated water smells sharp, has a milky white color.

See how to carefully pour the distilled water into the aquarium.

About water from other aquariums

Water from their other aquarium can be useful - it has a long-established microflora and biological balance. For fish it is a reliable source of trace elements that are beneficial in terms of recovery. However, without knowing the history of another aquarium, it would be correct to find out what freshwater fish lived in it, what it was sick with, and what quality its water was. You can ask this question from the owners of the reservoir, or conduct observations on their own. For the experiment you need only a few days, some free time, and, of course, old water.

Pour the liquid into a clean glass tank, let it stand in it for several days. Noticing cloudiness, precipitation - you know, it is not entirely safe. It is possible to pour a part of such water into an unprepared aquarium with plants. If their appearance has deteriorated - a sure sign that the fish should not live in a pond with such water. But the best way is to start a tank with new water on your own, or to seek help from trusted distributors.

Reverse osmosis and deionization

Settling of water with its subsequent preparation for the aquarium is possible using the method of reverse osmosis and deionization. These are two ways in which you can cleanse and defend a liquid. Each of these processes helps to remove impurities and any particles that may be in the water. Ionization neutralizes pH, eliminating various ions that could remain in the water. However, the resulting water is clean, but potentially dangerous - it does not preserve its biological properties, which is dangerous for fish. No matter how much she praised her crystal purity, she bears the risk because she changed the pH level, alkalinity and hardness.

Deionized water removes beneficial salts and trace elements that are needed for fish and plants. Such water is obtained as a result of deep purification by reverse osmosis, or ion exchange. In the process of pressure, water is passed through a semi-permeable shell from a more concentrated to a less concentrated solution. The shell skips the solution, but does not miss the components dissolved in it.

Softeners need to buy in stores, do not need to mine them yourself. Settling water with the right ingredients will be beneficial for some fish.

What to do with bottled water?

How long should you defend bottled water for an aquarium? She does not require insisting. Bottled liquid, although it is credible, is not useful for fish, because its pH level does not match the standard, and it is free from many trace elements that can “revive” the reservoir. How much such water do not use - even in conjunction with an infused tap it is not very effective. Often, the parameters of such water are completely unknown. Often, vitamins, flavors, preservatives, and even colorants are added to it to maintain a crystal clear appearance. All this is destructive to the health of the fish.

Reservoir with defended rainwater

Rainwater is also used in a fish tank. Previously, such water was used in food, but nowadays it is not particularly useful (except for that which falls in ecologically clean regions). It contains impurities of toxic substances and parasites, therefore upholding and powerful filtration are necessary. Rainwater may contain substances that are not washed out of the air. Pollution from pipes, gutters, pipelines, roofs and other surfaces from which it has flowed into it.

For aquarium needs, rainwater is not always suitable - improper treatment of the fluid hurts the fish. How much time will it take to settle the rain? After drawing water into a clean glass container, install a powerful filter in it, after treating the liquid for several hours. After cleaning, leave the water for a few days in a cool place. However, the risk from such water is high - its application is possible only after laboratory research.

Preparation, composition of water for the aquarium

As you know, all living things on earth can not do without water. First of all, it concerns the fish that live in it. If you decide to put an aquarium at home and start a fish in it, you should know what kind of water is suitable for this.

Aquarists have created the term "water chemistry", and with its help indicate the level of hardness, salinity and pH of water.

In order for the fish to feel well and develop properly, all these indicators must be within the normal range. If they are not respected, then this omission can lead the animals to chemical shock and they will die. It is also important to learn how to determine the purity, oxygen content and movement of water. Experienced professionals buy instruments for determining the composition of the water in the aquarium, as well as various accessories and substances that help to change the composition of the water.

The composition of the water in the aquarium should always correspond to the norm, even though some species of fish have adapted to the changes.

To determine the level of salinity, you need to buy a hydrometer: it is he who will determine the level of salt in the water. There is such information on sea salt packages, but still water needs to be checked.

The hardness of the water indicates the amount of salts that are in it. The more of them, the harder the water. When decorating an aquarium, you must remember that shells and corals can significantly increase the hardness of the water.

If it is necessary to turn soft water into hard water, it is enough to add a mixture of special salts or limestone.

Before you run the fish, a thorough preparation of the water for the aquarium should be carried out. If you use tap water, before pouring it, you need to let it stand for a few days, then pour it into the aquarium, let it stand for 3 days, plant the plants and only 7 days later you can run the fish.

So that the pH level does not go beyond the normal range, many aquarists periodically acidify the water, as due to some decorative elements or soluble salts that get into the water from the tap, the pH can shift to the alkaline or neutral zone.

Carried away by the chemistry of water, do not forget about its quality: keep your purity, avoid turbidity and pollution from food debris and decomposition products.

How to make seawater for aquarium?

Marine aquariums in our country have not yet received such wide distribution as freshwater. Perhaps this is due to the problem of the availability of natural sea water, especially if there is no sea nearby. However, no matter how strange it may seem at first glance, the presence or absence of a natural saline environment does not affect the launch of the marine (or reef) aquarium. Such water can and should be prepared independently, and the technology of preparation has long been tested in practice.

The basic principle of creating "sea" water for the aquarium

The word is not quoted in quotes. We are talking about a synthetic marine aquatic environment, the basic principle of which is to add salt to fresh water in a certain proportion. Actually, it would be possible to finish on this issue if this were not for a number of the most important conditions. They need to dwell.

What salt is needed to run the aquarium?

As is known, the chemical composition of the salts is different, and they are used differently.

For example, there is sea salt for baths (it is widely used both in usual house conditions, and in beauty salons), rock salt, food table salt (usual or with addition of iodine).

There are several types of technical salt: anti-glaciation, as a reagent, as part of dishwashing detergents in dishwashers, etc.

The main condition: none of these salts can be used to prepare the aquatic environment of a marine aquarium in any case!

Only a special commercial salt with the inscription "For a marine aquarium", prepared synthetically based on scientific developments in the field of aquaristics, is suitable.

Such salt can be purchased at pet stores or online stores, where it is represented very widely. It is enough to mention such compounds as:

  • Aquarium Systems Instant Ocean;
  • Elos reef special salt;
  • Royal nature pro tropical salt;
  • Seachem aquavitro salinity;
  • RED SEA, Marine Life;
  • TETRA salt;
  • synthetic compounds from the company Tropic Marine and some others.

Each commercial powder has detailed instructions for use, the requirements of which are mandatory in the preparation of synthetic seawater.

Choosing this or that salt, it is necessary to consider that they are for reef (coral) or fish aquariums. However, there are universal salt mixtures.

Water preparation

There are at least three main approaches to the preparation of water for its subsequent salting: the use of ordinary tap water, distillation and osmosis (running water through a reverse osmosis unit).

Pros and cons of tap water. Although many experts strongly oppose the use of ordinary tap water for salting, some owners of saltwater aquariums use it as a starting material. She defended for at least 24 hours, filtered (including using a carbon filter), and then add special branded formulations called air conditioners.

For example, German aquarium air conditioners, such as Tetra, Aqua Medic, Preis Aquaristik or hW-wiegandt, do a good job of cleaning the tap water from nitrites, phosphates, chlorine, and heavy metal ions.

How do sea creatures feel in such an environment? Hardly comfortable.

Distilled water perfect for cooking marine aqua. Purified from all harmful substances by distillation, it is immediately ready for salting. One disadvantage of this method is that it is very costly in terms of cost. Household electric distillers have low productivity, high cost and consume quite a lot of electricity.

Reverse Osmosis Plant. Passing a tap liquid through a reverse osmosis system is much cheaper than distillation and allows you to get an almost perfect starting material. The essence of this method is to pass water under high pressure through a special translucent membrane. The water thus obtained does not need treatment with air conditioners; you can immediately add special salt to it.

The household installation of reverse osmosis is relatively inexpensive, small in size, it is easy to install inside the aquarium pedestal, it can supply osmosis water through a thin stream of hose directly to the aquarium.

Why do you need to thoroughly clean the water?

As it is known, many different impurities are dissolved in tap water. This is easy to check if you use a quality control device called a TDS meter. By the way, every owner of a marine aquarium would be nice to have such a device. It is easy to handle and inexpensive.

By lowering the TDS meter into a container with water, you can measure the concentration of foreign substances in it in ppm (on the instrument scale, they are marked with ppm divisions).

For example, if the device shows 450 ppm, then this means that 450 mg of unclear what impurities are contained in one liter of the sample.

One can only imagine what will happen if the concentrated commercial sea salt reacts with these impurities! What kind of aquarium water environment can we talk about in this case?

It turns out that the source water must first be thoroughly cleaned and then salted.

Cooking sea water

Only after cleaning the primary material, you can start salting.

If the aquarium is small, it is better to prepare the marine aquatic environment in a separate container and then pour it into the jar.

What capacity categorically can not be used? Experts give an exact answer to this question:

  • metal, galvanized, enameled pots, pans, buckets;
  • plastic containers not adapted for food;
  • cans, cans and other containers where chemically active and poisonous substances (fuel and lubricants, solvents, paints, varnishes, etc.) were once contained.
But the plastic canister (or bottle), which was originally drinking water, is fine.

The process of adding and dissolving salt is very simple, it is described in detail on the label of a commercial product. Moreover, it is possible to pour out the full weight of salted powder on 1/3 of the required volume, and then add osmotic water, bringing the volume to the norm. And you can gradually fill the salt in the full volume of fresh osmotic water. By the way, if the aquarium is large, then it usually does.

However, right after salting the sea water is not ready yet. It is necessary to wait until the constituent elements of the salt fully enter into interaction with each other and with the aqueous medium. As a rule, it takes no more than 24 hours. And only then you can turn on the aquarium equipment, run the aquarium.

For the first 2-3 weeks, it is advisable to monitor the water parameters daily: salinity - using a hydrometer, and hardness - using special tests to measure the total hardness.

Proper preparation of sea water is a very serious and rather time-consuming process, on which the successful functioning of a saltwater or reef aquarium depends. And if the aquarium inhabitants of the marine aquarium feel good, then the synthetic sea water is done correctly.
